February Frozen fanny trek

“Don't know where this thread is or what it was called, but a reminder to whoever is interested...

We're trying to put together a trip on the weekend of Feb. 16-17. Details TBD by the group, possibly snow-camping, maybe a "relatively short" snow-shoe backcountry backpack, maybe some combination of the two. We could set up a basecamp, whoever wants to could pack out for a night, the rest stay in basecamp & play, build a snowshelter, go x-country skiing, etc.”

Does it matter? I kinda like just posting trip details as they develop, & let who ever wants join in the fun... That time of year we don't need permits or anything like that, so there's no "responsible party" for anything of any consequence...”

“I don't mind acting as the contact point for this outing. In fact, if there are some that want to learn how to do emergency snow shelters, I'd like it, I can get my Life Scouts involved in a teaching project! I can also contact some EMT folks I know in Tahoe to help out...

The scouts I have in mind have been building Snow Shelters now for 4 years...usually twice a year...and I'd make sure they had their act together before helping others...

“I'm waffling on the overnight idea - I have plans the following weekend and don't want to leave my long-suffering significant other with the dogs 2 weekends in a row. But a day in the snow by Loon Lake could be way cool.”

“I'll give up a day or two of snowboarding for backpacking in a different area! Maybe I can take a extra day off (Fri or Mon) and ride in the Tahoe area????”

“Hey Pepperdog I always suggest an extra overnight (example, arrive Friday nite even tho the trek leavs Saturday) just so's folks can acclimate to altitude changes. A lot of sustained physical exertion (snowshoeing w a pack or dragging a gear sled?) can trigger altitide problems for some....”

“That sounds like fun. I could come up Friday night and spend Saturday hiking/snowshoeing and drive home Saturday night.”

“I think I'll back out of this trip. It's kind of far for me to drive for an overnight trip. I think I may head to Death Valley that weekend instead.

?? tho wanderer. I didn't have too much trouble last time in Deso, but can colder temps worsen the effects of altitude maladies? I've never seen that problem, but you the man that'd know.”
