My buddy was just telling me this weekend, "I think everyone, regaurdless of what their drinking preferences are, should do at least one Yagar Bomb in their life time.". Sounds like some kind of religious experience.

coffee addicts unite
I enjoy the single serving (teabag like) folgers on the trail. I add 1 packet of coffeemate and 1 swissmiss sugar free cocoa.Lightweight, low in sugar, yummy.

talking about STRONG coffee-- I once drank a POT of Turkish coffee (i.e coffee sludge with some nice spices) by myself...-- I was wired for the rest of the night!

Coffee gets bitter when it's overextracted, especially the cheap Robusto bean which contains a lot of acidity. Salt will help mask this acidity. Arabica does not contain as much acidity, so if you're using a high quality bean with no Robusto in the mix you it really helps cut down the bitterness. With a drip coffee machine it's very hard not to overextract the Robusto beans. There are some coffee machines out there nowadays that "bypass" the filter and do not run as much water through the beans. If you drink a lot of Robusto beans (folders, Maxwell House, etc) this will also help the coffee from getting bitter from overextraction. If you want good non-bitter strong cup of coffee you need to:

a). use plenty of ground coffee, 2 tablespoons / cup
b). do not overextract the bean! Using something like a french press where you can control the extraction time really helps out a lot
c). Don't use paper filters. The paper filters can absorb many of those yummy oils you want in your cup instead of getting absorbed by the paper.
d). Water "too hot" can give the coffee a bad taste as well as it leads to overextraction, though this is not as probable a senario as the first two cases. Water just a hair below the boiling point is what you want. If you are boiling water for your french press take the water off the eye before it reaches a rolling boil.

If anyone wants a good cup of coffee stop by my house. You can try my home roasted beans properly prepared.

Oh... and if you want non-bitter coffee on the trail you should try making a coffee concentrate. I make it in my french press.

I add about 1/4lb of coffee into my french press. I'll then pour about 2-2.5 cups of cold water over the ground coffee and let it soak for about a day... 25 hours. You then use the french press to strain out the ground coffee... and what you have left is a super concentrated coffee mix. Just pout it into hot water to taste. It actually makes a very smooth cup of coffee. By keeping the grounds chilled while it is extracting the beans it prevents overextraction... and you get a very smooth cup of coffee with no bitterness.

Did someone else post the instructions? I never bothered reading the rest of the thread. It's a little heavier method to carry coffee the my normal coffee tea bags I use when I hike... but the coffee is better and it's easier to make and there is less refuse.

How about just injecting the coffee straight into the veins... forego the bitterness altogether... LOL :-)

Regarding the Turkish coffee--my friend and I were at the Casino.... I was completely wide awake--must have had at least 4 "thimblefuls" of that turkish coffee--believe me, it was good, but I did pay for it in lack of sleep! :-)

Injecting coffee straight into the veins will eliminate the greatest aspects of a cup of coffee... the olfactory stimulation and the rivulets of pleasure cascading from your taste buds. The warm soothing coffee is just a catalyst for a congenial and gratifying day, it it not causative to this goal in and of itself... but without coffee's ability as a mental and physical stimulant that goal of a "pleasant day" would be much harder to acheive.

I like turkish, italian, jugoslavian coffee. I used to have a coworker that read the 'future" out your coffee cup. lol that was always fun. Well, better then working under the microscopes .

I think I may figured out my problem. I keep boiling the water. I knew not to do that, but never really knew why. The salt is good anyway though.

see now...there I sit AGAIN with my second cup of coffee today because of this dang thread.

I grind a week's worth at the grocery store and keep it in a Ziploc in the freezer.

Java and Arabica, 2 parts dark to 1 medium. Low acidity, slightly less caffeine and mellow taste.

Got my monthly fix of Peet's in the mailbox yesterday - ground 1-20-05. Haven't opened it but I believe it's Major Dickason's, one of my favorites :-D

Almost as much as the taste, I love opening up that container of beans every day and taking a deep whiff. mmmmmmmmm Wake Up!

Coffee almost smells better than it tastes. What a tease!

Question for those of you using the coffee pods, but not using the machine it's meant for:

Have you noticed you can't get a very strong cup to brew? Any tips?

about that concentrated coffee...I first started making it about 8 years ago when I started having serious acid reflux problems..coffee made with cold water does not release the amino acids that irritate the stomach and bring out the bitterness in coffee..I was into real kitchen gadget stuff then and bought a pricy unit which filters the coffee through a wool pad..I make many varieties of coffee..right now, I feel the need for a cup of Turkish coffee...I like the ritual of the little brass pot I cook it in..and, I love the taste...

Ok, I deal buy coffee makers at work now and the coffee pods......suck! We have a Senseo machine and a Bunn plugged in the office and if it weren't for the quality of the coffee, I might use the Senseo. Until they make premium coffee pods, I'll grind my own. Even better. How about a coffee pod maker, grind your own and put into the pod press??? Man, I could be a millionairess.

Love the Bunn by the way.

espresso
If you like dark roast coffee, give "Black Silk" a try. It makes an espresso with a real caffeine kick.

Would like a link to the coffee singles that were served and distributed by the other side at their booth during Trail Days this Spring. I wrote it down, but lost it. Thanks.

Coffee Singles
I find coffee singles to be an adequate substitute for *real* coffee if it's not possible to have the required coffee apparatus handy. As I understand it, they are half coffee grounds and half instant coffee.

I did an hour long hard ride on my bicycle last night then flopped into bed. This morning I feel like the 44 year old guy I am! When my doc once told me to cut back on the coffee I told him, "I've given up alcohol. I've given up soda pop. I've given up salty junk food. You will have to prey my cold, dead finger from my coffee cup!" Man do I need a good strong one today!!!

I love a couple of cups of strong coffee in the morning, but on the trail I find myself having a cup of hot chocolate first, then coffee if there is time for more. I need the sugar.

I used to take a cone, filters, and ground coffee beans. Now I just take the singles.

Over the years I have found that it doesn't matter much what coffee apparatus you use as long as you start with properly roasted, fresh-milled beans. Personally though, having tried the singles, I think they are adequate for trail use. I doubt if I will be bringing my cast-iron coffee mill along.

Ewker - No, I have not ordered any, yet. I'm fighting with myself about the price. At 75-80 cents per cup plus shipping, it is kinda expensive, even if it is good coffee. The store ones, which make 5-6 oz. of coffee, are around 20 cents per cup.

Colorado coffee addicts should try some from Allegra (Thornton, CO?). I get it at Whole Foods here in ABQ. Love their Guatemalan.

I was drooling all over this Quesenart coffee maker last night that had a grinder built right in. I don’t know if it dumps the grounds into the filter basket or not but it was a sweet machine! $150 though! YIKES!

i haven't used my coffeemaker in ages. I brew each cup. this way I don't drink as much coffee, and hey it tastes better too.

coffee makers are good for more then one person, that's about it.

Nigal...i know which one you are talking about I think. that would be awesome if it would dump the fresh grounded coffee into the basket. doubt it thou.
