New TT slow to load, open threads

“Anyone else notice the new TT is slow to open, and takes longer to open threads? It usually takes a full minute for the new TT Today to open on my computer, compared to the old TT which would open instantly. Also it takes about 10 seconds or longer for a thread to open on the new TT.

I have my preferences set to display messages posted within the past 1 day, so it's essentially the same as the old TT Today.

Matt would you let us know if the new server is slower than the old one. Then I can adjust or rule out my computer or settings as the cause.”

“I hadn't noticed it. But the problem may not be your computer or his server. It may be latency between the two. You could ping the server with the correct command and actually find out where the hang up is.”

“Ping the server? With sonar? Will he respond with a launch command?”

“1 ping saylor.......just one.”

“Hit your start button and select run. Then type "ping 65.208.102.74"

That is Matts server. The times shown are the latency to the site.

Now do a "tracert -d www.yahoo.com"

Each line shown is a hop that the route between you and him takes. They should all be under 100, any over that could be causing you a problem you can't conrol.”

“The numbers for the ping were between 154 and 157.

The numbers for the tracert were between 93 and 176, with one number of 1764 and another line "timed out"

So, for the non-tech heads here what does that mean? All numbers over 100 indicate excessive delay? And how do I tell if the problem is on my end or his?”

“What sort of connection are you using? When I said less than 100 I forgot I was talking about using a DSL or cable modem.

If your using one of these and still getting high pings, then it is your system. This can be tweeked a little.”

“I was having trouble with slow page loads, time outs, etc. with several different websites along with other problems even though I have a new and relatively fast computer. I changed ISPs and problem solved. Moral of the story is that it was the ISP's server, not Matts.”

“That is what I'm thinking since you had a router time out. It could possibly be his computer, but I doubt it. So who is yer ISP? AOL?”

“I'm using a 56k dial up modem with AT&T as my ISP. No problem with slowness with any other websites, and this TT slowness started only when Matt changed to the new format a couple days ago. So it would seem the delay is caused somehow by Matt's new server/setup and not my ISP.”

“Since he changed his site I would tent to agree, but none of us seem to have this problem. SO here is my non-professional opinion:

1. Most likely some switch between you and his new server is having temporary problems, I bet this is the case.

2. Your local ISP to his server has a crappy router in the path and nothing will change this except a possible change of ISPs.”

“Nope, I've noticed a time delay since the change over. I use a cable modem from Comcast (old AT&T) I've got a Dell 850 mhz running as well. I think that this site is more "intense" with the images and all. The slow down has not been bad on my end, but you can tell.”

“I really have not noticed a difference, the site comes up very fast and I'm currently using an old 300Mhz AMD K6-2 system.”

“The speed of your computer has nothing to do with slowness loading pages. It has to do with the route chosen to get the request from your computer to Matt's server for a new page and the correct page to be loaded to your computer from Matt's server following some route. One of the factors you have no control over is the traffic on the internet. Routes to servers that you need to reach are a complicated business. That's why the people that develop and manage these systems make the big bucks. There is nothing you can do short of changing ISP's and hope that helps. There is no guarantee.

I'm using a cable modem and RoadRunner as my ISP. I've had no problems reaching this site.

It also depends on where you're located. My trace route showed 16 hops to Matt's server. They're listed in milliseconds. Add them up and you'll get the time it takes for a request to get from you to Matt's server. You'll also probably see where those servers are located through the Hostname of the server. If you do noy know where it is located you can use a Whois command from the web.

“So what ISP should I select to replace rr? And what next, if there is no improvement?”

“Wow, even submitting a msg. takes considerably longer!”

“You are already using RoadRunner, nowslimmer? What did the trace route say?”

“My reccomendation is to wait a week and see if the problematic router gets fixed. From the sound of your tracerout the problem is a router connection somewhere timing out. This could mean that occasionally your requests get through or that after timing out your request goes to another router. Either way the problem is uncontrollableat your end.

I have lived in a few rural area with only a few ISPs available. The interesting thing I found was that other ISPs were contracting the only real local server to be their dial in. They all had different phone numbers, but the same guys did the service. So if you have a similar set up going on near you, changing your ISP wouldn't neccisarily fix anything.

I also hope since Matt has changed the server that Trail Talk doesn't go down as much as it did in the past.”

Also, I have CS. I am now under CS as username AdakHiker. But this Post a Message at the bottom of the string says:
Username: nowslimmer

I wanted to register through CS, but have not found a way to do it yet. I have completed a disk cleanup, a restart, shut down and restarted and have tried under two different usernames in CS. I am now in CS under username AdakHiker.

Can you or anyone help?”

I did the tracer thing and had 10 hops.

I tried a whois from the address line but that didn't give me anything but a couldn't find that type of message.

Am I typing the whois in the wrong place?

I found out how they remember the username and the answer to my previous post. They use cookies. But IE and Netscape handle them differently and do not crosscheck each other's lists. Also, registration no longer appears to be case sensitive with regard to the letters in a username.
