Other Outdoor Sites
With all the moaning about this site, I thought I'd throw out some alternatives. Feel free to add to the list, there's a ton, but this place IMHO is still the best because of the people involved!

Outdoor Review - Outdoor Talk All gear, all the time. Some posters get a little too carried away with posting their pictures and it might feel "clique-ish" at first, but a lot of good info and informative posters.

Backpacker.com forum Moderated. Interesting posts, lots of first-timers looking for info, but overall informative.

Great Outdoors Forum Tight-knit group, seems sometimes to be focused more on personal issues than technical matters, but no trolls or flamers.

Extreme Dayhikers site

rec.backcountry.useful Moderated. Informative.

A different "TrailTalk" One of the loneliest places on the web, it seems.

A board focused on the Pacific NW

Washington Trails Association Trail reports galore!

Unfortunately, the only people moaning are those with fragile little ego's and can't abide by anyone thinking that some of these other sites may be better than this one.

Gear Slut: I must have missed all those whiney threads.. Maybe over the holidays?

Kleetn: Thanks! I will check them out sometime today.

Trust me, it isn't worth it.

Enjoy browsing some of those other sites plus a few more. It will probably give anyone who visits them a less ego-centric perspective when they return to posting here.

I’d have to agree with kleetn’s take on the others and affirm that this place is the best of it’s kind (whatever that means).

Actually, I'd never seen 'the other' TrailTalk before. Pretty funny really, in a pathetic sort of way. Maybe we should all visit it just once and post a non-sequitur, just to give our sister site a little life.

I'll be darned. Kleetn, on that Outdoor review site, is that THE HIKER BOY????

As in "hiker boy is a big doo doo head" Hiker boy??? (tarpy's words, not mine!)

Kinda wondered where he was posting.

A discussion board is basically the same wherever it is (even if we have more than our share of morons on TT like BB). It's the other resources which are associated with some of the other sites which make them great. I like the gear reviews on Outdoor Review. BP mag's new boards are really good now.

The extreme dayhiker site was beyond me. Why would anyone want to go rim-rim-rim of the Grand Canyon in 20 hours?!? For me the whole purpose of hiking is to enjoy the outdoors, not to see how many miles I can cover in one day without killing myself.

I like it here, I think I'll stay.

I have some links on my homepage but here are some favorites:
The Lightweight Backpacker About going light.

AT Basecamp A new message board mostly about thru-hiking the AT.

The best site on the internet.

Appalachian Trail Mailing List Surrogate A new response to the Appalachian Trail Mailing List shutting down.

Thru-Hiker A cool site devoted to long distance hiking.

Trail Journals An online collection of trail journals.

Wings The homemade stove archive.

The Appalachian Trail Homepage A site devoted to the AT.

Phil's Trail Talk Contributor Page Enough said.

Anybody seen Nigal lately? I think he's dissing TT over at OR, the lousy bastard:

Hello all! I haven’t been around these boards in some time and wanted to see what’s going on and to say hi. In viewing the threads I am amazed. Where are the “Death to America”, political, and “I hate You All” threads? You guys actually come here and talk about hiking? WOW! And where’s all the trolls? You guys are so normal! Would someone please use my screen name once in awhile and troll me just so I feel at home? LOL! I’ve been frothing at the mouth to find a good forum like this. I’m just glad Hiker Boy tracked me down and reminded me of this place. I’ve got a lot of issues (tell us about it Poopy!) to discuss and look forward to learning some great stuff from you guys. 8)

The rotten bastard! Um, death to America!
