Lucky Tennessee boaters...
You all need to pick up a whitewater kayak and start looking at cloudy skies with a big smile on your face! I've got a buddy that just moved out there for paddling, and I might have to follow him - especially after my trip this weekend - first day of December, hopping into my boat 20 miles west of Vail, forecast is for snow and lots of it. Should be interesting...
Anyways, I hope nothing bad comes out of all this rain - I know every boater out there must be walking around with a sh!t-eating grin on his/her face, lucky dogs...

someone has offered me a free boat. here is what he has said about it.

"I have an Old Sunfish for the taking
Hull is in good shape with new inspection port
Old Style Rudder and Centerboard
Blades have new Varnished, Rudder is un assembled
I have the mast, but it is missing the sail and booms
"

so anyone that knows anything about sail boats, please help me!!!
is it worth it? it's free from a friend of a friend.

Without the sail and the booms, it's an expensive-to-maintain hole in the water. Find out how much those will cost before you take the "free boat".

Sunfish is a class racing boat. No that does not mean it is fast, but there are races where you must use a sunfish.

What does this mean ?

It means there are thousands of them and therefore all parts are readily available.

Rudder assembly is either screws (no not Brad Pitt) or bolts to hold it together, possibly glue, not rocket science.

Boom set $277
A new sail about $260
(Torresen Marine, Inc.
3003 Lake Shore Drive - Muskegon, Michigan 49441 - 231-759-8596 - 231-755-1522 (FAX)

Together they are about 1/2 what a used Sunfish would cost.

But as Sunfish are so common you can probably get the parts on E-bay cheaper.

this is what he said.

"New parts:
BOOM SET, SUNFISH, UPPER AND LOWER $277.25
SAIL, SUNFISH, MIST (many different types) $261.00
(typical price)"

but i could always find used (other then the sail I would want new)

soooooo...do I give treebeard another reason to devorice me for bringing another boat home?

ps, I live on an Island (nogh said)
LOL

ditto what manuka said

Also, my experience in sailing any part of the Tennessee River has not been too great.

There is some decent sailing at Pickwick, but I haven't heard many good things about Kentucky Lake.

Anything outside of a mile or so from the dam involves a lot of current, even as summer pool.

There aren't many lakes in Middle or West TN that will support sailing.

If I were still on the coast, I would tell you to take the boat and lend it to me for most of the year.

Up our way, near Guntersville, there is a large marina that appears to be dedicated to sailcraft. There are some pretty big ones parked there, so I guess there's good sailing on Guntersville Lake.
