It may be easier to sail with two people when you're first learning to sail it. One person controls the rudder and one the sheet on the sail. It will also be much easier turning the boat up right when you capsize.

maybe it belong to this:

May 31, 2004 -- Coney Island Cyclone riders had a hair-raising experience yesterday when the world-famous roller coaster stopped dead in its tracks at the top of a hill after a woman's wig blew off and got caught in the wheels.
The bizarre mishap had riders stuck in their seats for nearly 30 minutes.

"This happens sometimes where something flies out and gets stuck," said Cyclone manager Jerry Menditto. "Usually, it's a sweater or a pocketbook, but this time, it was a lady's wig."

Witnesses said the ride ground to a halt at around 3 p.m. when the train reached the top of the second hill, about 75 feet up. As puzzled riders enjoyed sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean, emergency workers and firefighters climbed the tracks to locate the problem.

They discovered a dark brown wig tangled in the wheel base of one of the cars. After pulling the hairpiece out, they used their muscle to push the cars down the hill to get the ride started again.

Menditto said the wig apparently blew off of a woman's head on the previous ride cycle and landed on the tracks. When the next ride began, it got caught in the wheels.

"We have no idea whose wig it is. It's a mystery," he said.

Something you may want to buy for the boat is a small short paddle. Incase you get stuck some place without any wind.

I learned how to sail in a sunfish at Boy Scout camp. Three of us signed it out, each thinking the others knew how to sail it. Not until we got out in the middle of the lake did we realize that none of us had the slightest clue. The really funny part was when we were bearing down on the dock and the lifeguard, who had been madly waving his arms above his head just seconds before, decided he’d better make a break for it and went tear assin’ up toward land. Goood times…

If you get a trailer for that thing, I’m moving by a 2-mile long lake at the end of the month. I’d be happy to help you try to sink it.

Watch out mapleleaf, sailing has even more gear potential than BPing. I've got a couple items waiting to add to my boat -- a boomkicker (it supports the mainsail boom when the mainsail is down) and a Windex wind indicator that goes at the top of the mast. Plus I need to get a new spare tire for the trailer, reseal the mast head, etc.

Just remember sailing also has a gear disease similar to BPing's "lighter is better"-itis -- it's called "2-foot-itis": "I like my boat, but it would be perfect if it was only a couple feet longer." I've started with a 14-foot centerboard day sailer, sloop rigged. Now I dream of something around 25 feet. Of course I'd need a bigger truck to tow it........

Well the nice thing, mapleleaf, is that with a Sunfish you don't need anything I mentioned above. Plus you can cartop it, so no trailer. Just get that sail and rigging and get on the water. Good luck in your quest. A free boat is a good thing already.

My guess is that there is a sailing center in New York that runs courses for beginning sailors. It would give you a good place to hook up with like-minded folks (maybe even some other Sunfish owners) and also lessen the learning curve from lots of good advice and even some practice on other small boats.
