mapleleaf, here's just one listing from the US Sailing website (www.ussailing.org) section on sailing education:

Tasca Sailing School and Club, The American Small Craft Association, Inc. - Flushing Meadow Lake Boathouse, Queens, NY 11364 (s)718-699-1951

Lots more listings for around the NYC area and NY state when a search is done at the site for small boat education.

Tilt, oh yes indeed, Cape Dory's have nice lines. I'm partial, too, to the small Pacific Seacraft models and am intrigued by the Nonsuch catboats. I'm trying to keep my dreams in the 25 ft range, but really I do think about the 28 ft. range -- okay, I won't turn down a 36-foot centercockpit. (I have 2-foot-itis even in my daydreams). Yeah, all the issues, headroom, storage, berths, outboard vs. inboard, on and on. The current plan is to keep learning the basics on the 14-footer, take keelboat certification lessons from an ASA or US Sailing outfit, then do bareboat chartering rather than own a larger boat.

Seasonal berths on the Great Lakes are more than the cost of a week's charter in the Caribbean, and that doesn't even deal with the cost of owning and maintaining the actual boat or the 2 1/2 hour drive to the nearest Great Lakes marina. That's probably why, if we ever do move up, it'll be to about the maximum trailerable size, which is 23-25 foot depending on displacement and width.

I hear there's some nice hiking around the Greater Antilles.... <G>

There are quite a few boats in the 25-28 foot range at the lake just north of here (30 minute drive -- not too bad). Catalinas and Hunters are very popular.

For a while, there was one knucklehead who had a Morgan 41 up there... it was a friggen aircraft carrier, <VBG>

tilt, there's some great wilderness camping in the Apostle Islands that can only be reached by boat, not to mention Isle Royale.

But I, too, am very fond of a good beach hike in tropical breezes. And I wouldn't mind hiking up a few tropical hills, either.

mapleleaf, tell them that you have a Sunfish and that you want to learn how to sail a centerboard or daggerboard dinghy or daysailer. That's the level they start juniors in, usually in something like an Optimist, so they should know what you are talking about. You need to learn on the type of boat you will be using.

Keelboat class is getting ahead of the game and won't address issues you need to face, such as the daggerboard (the board that goes through the hull down into the water in place of the keel of a larger boat). If they don't teach a small boat sailing class, ask them for a referral to a place that does.

Maple your son is a boyscout.

Go to summer camp with him and attend the small boat sailing merit badge class.

Prolly less than $200 (our troop pays the adults ways), you spend some fun time with the boy, make it possible for other kids to go to camp and you get a week off from work and home chores.

Good lord, that's pretty steep!! For that much, you can get a 3-day keel boat class where you live on board the boat while learning and sailing!!

The scouts is one option, and you might check with the Red Cross or the Coast Guard Auxiliary for resources.

If you brought the boat up near me I could try and teach you how to sail. Keep in mind that it has been at least 10 years since I've been in a sailboat.

I learned to sail at boy scout camp in a Sunfish too.

If you bring it out here, I'll teach you on a nice calm little lake, no motors allowed. Then when you are sone, you can go on the Windriverpalooza hike.

Fair enough?

Oh yeah, I won't charge you a dime, just a bottle of the finest bourbon around.

well BOB came through!

Yes, but we offer lessons in a substantially larger boat than a Sunfish. We teach on a 27-foot Soling, a keelboat. The
basic course is $325, plus an annual membership of $25. The course, 16
hours, is taught on two consecutive Sundays.

Keep looking mapleleaf. There has to be someone/someplace in your vicinity who can get you into an appropriate boat. One thing you might search out is a marina/sailing shop that sells Sunfish and other such boats (Lasers, Optimists, etc.). They should know who teaches small boat sailing. Also, do a web search for a Sunfish owners group. There has to be one; I belong to the Capri 14.2 National Association and it has a web site that has been invaluable in making contact with others who sail the same boat. Also check for the manufacturer site for info and links -- is Vanguard the makers of Sunfish these days?

i think so. the owner emailed that website to me when I asked about the boat.

I am looking into the Boy Scout thing.
Hey, we are leaders, so why not?
I get free lessons and the boys have a blast and earn badges.

Start with the BSA Small Boat Sailing merit badge book.
At about $3 even Treebeard should not whine too much.

The BSA program is pretty much geared around the sunfish.

Camp Winnebago just off Rte 80 in Jersey definitly has a sunfish fleet.

pekka, this is one place you told me about

Flushing Meadow Queens:

Ahoy, Tilt, ... watch out, there's a lot of Capri 14.2 sailors out there.

mapleleaf, that sounds like it would be a pretty good deal. While it is keel boat training, the access to a boat makes that attractive. Plus you'll meet folks that probably have dinghy sailing experience who can give you tips on centerboard/daggerboard operations. Combine the BSA program and that TASCA program and it should give you a really solid base for sailing a variety of boats.

Yeah, mapleleaf, that's one of the fun parts of having a sailboat. After long deliberations, reino and I settled on "Ice Out" for our Capri, since that is the day you have to wait for on the northern lakes before a boat can go in the water.

Should you ever find yourself passing through the North Woods, you can show me what you've learned. Hopefully when nowslimmer visits in a couple weeks, the weather will be good since he's arriving at the Summer Solstice, and there's a national program called Summer Sail-stice that is promoting having all sailors get their boats on the water that day.

sail
mapleleaf
10:23:10 AM

I would not, it is not a sunfish sail.

You are going to have to spend SOME money on this free hull.

Eventually you may want to sell it.
A non sunfish sail will drop from the price as if there is no sail, it will never be quite right.

a good sail will come
