Thrifty, I did the other end of the island (the non motel end) and it's well worth the trip. In other words, I'm not answering your question either, but go anyway.

Heya Thrifty keep in mind...there's a 4 hr boat ride to get out there....if there's any waves at all that could be a LONG boat ride!
There are plenty of other great places up there tho....I would definitely recommend driving up to Copper Harbor, maybe checking out the Porkies, if you need any more ideas shoot me an email...I can give ya more places to go than you can possible do in a week!

No! This is the most rugged place I've ever hiked in MI. You are a long way from anywhere. NOT a good place to take babies. North Manitou would be better by far if you feel the need to get away to an island. You cannot camp anywhere on Isle Royale, you must stay at designated camps, many of which are at least 3 miles apart.

I'm planning on taking Abby to Isle Royale right about age 10. Before then she won't have the legs long enough to get up some of the rock steps.

Okay, ever the contrarian, let me politely disagree...to a point. If you boat to the island from the Minnesota side, the boat ride is only 1.5 hours of potentially gut wrenching nausea, much better than 4:) Also, that end of the island is much gentler terrain and easily broken into quite easy day hikes, perhaps even gentle enough for people from the south. No motel, but there are huts similar to the AT, but with doors and screens. However, really, I agree with Sass.

You have a valid point NF however it's a LONG drive up to Grand Portage for some of us....of course you could always take the plane out :)
But I think Sass pretty much summed it up...prolly not a good idea :)

thanks for all the input guys...i kind of thought it might be too rough...if we're close enough we might hit it up for just a day...UP, i'll definitely take you up on your offer...Sass, might be hitting you up too as an expert on the area

sassafras
your statement about not being able to camp anywhere is not correct. only groups have to stick to an itenerary. i asked about this when i was there and the ranger said "no problem". bushwhacking is ok so is camping away from established sites. you just can't have fires unless it's an emergency situation.

Camping

We would like to go to Isle Royale for an overnight camping trip, but there are only 2 of us and I read that you only take reservations for groups of 7 or more.
Parties of 6 or less are defined as "individual parties", meaning that reservations cannot be made. Parties of 6 or less,
unlike groups, do not have to stick to their permits itinerary.

copper harbor is not in MN. it's well over a hundred from MI now.

from copper h.: http://www.isleroyale.com/schedule.html

the haughton boat is the same price: http://www.nps.gov/archive/isro/Transportation/ranger3.htm

and even more from MN: http://www.isleroyaleboats.com/rates.asp although their day trips are $49. one would have 3h layover at Windingo.

i realize that copper harbor is in michigan, and with the longer boat ride it would be more, but i just dont remember paying no godawful prices like that

maybe they were that much, it's been probably 5 or 6 years since i went. either theyve gone up dramatically, or my memory is rusty

i paid $100 for round the trip from Copper H. 3y years ago. the prices went up the year after because they got a new boat.

Well thank you very much for correcting my incorrect statement.

The fee for the ferry from Copper Harbor varies by date. During peak dates it's more, $62.00 one way for an adult in 08. Non peak months, $54.00 one way.
