“Limpy, I did go and buy Sarah Brightman, La Luna on Saturday night and have listened a few times. I like it a lot.

Two questions about the lyrics, I am not always so good at interpreting.

1. Winter in July

I like the words and they seem pretty straightforward other than the title line, "winter in July." What does that mean, how does it signify life passing one by?


We may not know the reason why
we're born into this world
where a man lives only to die

Make the best of what's given you

why deny yourself
don't just let life pass you by

2. In "A Whiter Shade of Pale," I guess I don't understand any of it. Who is the Miller? Maybe that'll help.

“hey Fritz, i love "A Whiter Shade of Pale"...it's so poetic and mysterious...definitely one of those songs that you could try to interpret forever and ever :-)

a miller is "a grain grinder." in addition to being seeds of plants, "grain" can mean "the stratification of the wood fibers in a piece of wood" or "natural disposition." so, in the song we have twistings and turnings of what is "natural," and also a change in the narrator's disposition...and everything in this song goes against the grain of logic. for example...

"She said, 'I'm home on shore leave,'
though in truth we were at sea
so I took her by the looking glass
and forced her to agree
saying, 'You must be the mermaid
who took Neptune for a ride.'
But she smiled at me so sadly
that my anger straightway died"”

* "Lost Son" is very evocative

* "He Doesn't See Me" is touching

* "Whiter Shade of Pale" I like a lot musically, but it frustrates me to be so clueless about what a song is about

i chose my name while i was reading the *His Dark Materials* trilogy by Philip Pullman...Lyra is the heroine. she and Will fight the forces of evil, but they are from separate worlds (having cut through to the same world with a "subtle knife"), and at the end of the 3rd book, they learn that one cannot live in the other's world, because it is not suited to them, and they would die an early death. the series was recommended to me by the first man i was ever in love with; at that point, only two of the books had been published...but the third one summed up our end quite well. i learned a few months ago that Lyra is also a constellation, both the Western and the Eastern myths of which involve separated lovers. as my horoscope says, "[Scorpios'] feelings are so intense that even when their love is of the highest, and most idealistic kind, they are nevertheless frequently protagonists in tragic, even violent romances, 'star-crossed lovers'."

“The Story put out by Procul Harum many years ago was that the lyrics to Whiter Shade of Pale were made up as a goof. Supposedly, they just decided to throw together a bunch of allusive heavy sounding lyrics together in a song and amuse themselves as people struggled to find meaning in them.

Of course, if you believe in the "unconcious," especially Jungs variety, that doesn't mean they didn't put a lot of meaning in the song. Others would tell you that it doesn't matter if you discover meaning in the song, or if you create it. (Of course, there are some evil mothers who will tell you that we never discover meanings).”

“oh yeah, i definitely think that if a writer says they intended something, that one should take that into consideration. and i think most people are taught to do that, in considering all aspects of a work. but no need to stop there! :-) just because a writer intended one thing, does not mean that other things may not be simultaneously "true." when i said it didn't matter what a writer intended, i was rather hasty...i just meant that there are other factors that go into a work, besides intent, and perhaps over and above intent.”
