I like it a lot. Two questions about the lyrics, I am not always so good at interpreting. 1. Winter in July I like the words and they seem pretty straightforward other than the title line, "winter in July." What does that mean, how does it signify life passing one by? We may not know the reason why we're born into this world where a man lives only to die his story left untold. Make the best of what's given you everything will come in time why deny yourself don't just let life pass you by like winter in July 2. In "A Whiter Shade of Pale," I guess I don't understand any of it. Who is the Miller? Maybe that'll help. Thanks again for referring me to this CD, I am really enjoying it.” 7:42:12 AM 12/10/01 “This morning it's the new Seven Dust CD "animosity". Very good!” 8:29:07 AM 12/10/01 I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow “Listening to "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack in memory of watching the movie for the first time last night. Awesome movie and soundtrack...two thumbs up from me.” 9:04:10 AM 12/10/01 “"Gasp! My hair!"” 9:21:10 AM 12/10/01 “hey Fritz, i love "A Whiter Shade of Pale"...it's so poetic and mysterious...definitely one of those songs that you could try to interpret forever and ever :-) a miller is "a grain grinder." in addition to being seeds of plants, "grain" can mean "the stratification of the wood fibers in a piece of wood" or "natural disposition." so, in the song we have twistings and turnings of what is "natural," and also a change in the narrator's disposition...and everything in this song goes against the grain of logic. for example... "She said, 'I'm home on shore leave,' though in truth we were at sea so I took her by the looking glass and forced her to agree saying, 'You must be the mermaid who took Neptune for a ride.' But she smiled at me so sadly that my anger straightway died"” 9:26:55 AM 12/10/01 “Miller = grain grinder, that's what I thought, but still I have no clue what that song is about. I like a lot of the songs on this CD. * "Winter in July" I like both musically and lyrically * "Lost Son" is very evocative * "He Doesn't See Me" is touching * "Whiter Shade of Pale" I like a lot musically, but it frustrates me to be so clueless about what a song is about Oddly, the verse you posted is not in the song on the CD. (???) Thanks for your reply, lyra, now I am wondering about your name...is it for the instrument, or for lyrics? ;-)” 9:41:58 AM 12/10/01 “Listened to some great Van Morrison and Cat Stevens this weekend courtesy of Tarabull and Binra. Great stuff. (and... I was kidding about Pantera!) And, who could ever get enough of Stevie Ray Vaughan?” 9:49:13 AM 12/10/01 “here's a page with those lyrics. http://www.procolharum.com/text99.htm#A_Whiter_Shade_of i chose my name while i was reading the *His Dark Materials* trilogy by Philip Pullman...Lyra is the heroine. she and Will fight the forces of evil, but they are from separate worlds (having cut through to the same world with a "subtle knife"), and at the end of the 3rd book, they learn that one cannot live in the other's world, because it is not suited to them, and they would die an early death. the series was recommended to me by the first man i was ever in love with; at that point, only two of the books had been published...but the third one summed up our end quite well. i learned a few months ago that Lyra is also a constellation, both the Western and the Eastern myths of which involve separated lovers. as my horoscope says, "[Scorpios'] feelings are so intense that even when their love is of the highest, and most idealistic kind, they are nevertheless frequently protagonists in tragic, even violent romances, 'star-crossed lovers'." TMI, you say? eh, i'm bored... ;-)” 9:59:38 AM 12/10/01 “has anyone ever heard the Fun Loving Criminals? they kick ass, i just got heard one of their CDs over the weekend...also, i got to listen to DoggyStyle, yeeesss! and that Chemical Brothers rocks, iluvbackpacking...sooo easy to listen to. i don't get to listen to anything while i TT at work, because fun is prohibited here... ;-)” 10:19:14 AM 12/10/01 “I don't really listen to much Music, but I hear that Birch loves Stevie Ray Vaughn, especially to fall asleep to.” 10:25:15 AM 12/10/01 “I really like my Spinner 4.0,,,however my IT guys keep a watch on how much bandwidth is being burned up. Just opened it up to find a track by Deep Purple,,,Smoke on the Water.” 10:27:44 AM 12/10/01 “lol@le Subtil didn't read your post first.” 10:29:48 AM 12/10/01 “The Story put out by Procul Harum many years ago was that the lyrics to Whiter Shade of Pale were made up as a goof. Supposedly, they just decided to throw together a bunch of allusive heavy sounding lyrics together in a song and amuse themselves as people struggled to find meaning in them. Of course, if you believe in the "unconcious," especially Jungs variety, that doesn't mean they didn't put a lot of meaning in the song. Others would tell you that it doesn't matter if you discover meaning in the song, or if you create it. (Of course, there are some evil mothers who will tell you that we never discover meanings).” 2:25:33 PM 12/10/01 “yeah, the whole intentions argument...i don't think it matters whether they intended for the song to mean one way or another. if we always had to stick to writers' intentions when it came to interpreting, what a boring world it would be!” 2:33:49 PM 12/10/01 “As a listener, thanks Ped for taking the pressure off. I'll just take it as nonsense so I don't have to feel inadequate. LOL As a would-be writer, Lyra, I hope most readers approach a poem, story or song with the objective of, at least at first, understanding the writer's intended meaning or message.” 2:40:31 PM 12/10/01 “oh yeah, i definitely think that if a writer says they intended something, that one should take that into consideration. and i think most people are taught to do that, in considering all aspects of a work. but no need to stop there! :-) just because a writer intended one thing, does not mean that other things may not be simultaneously "true." when i said it didn't matter what a writer intended, i was rather hasty...i just meant that there are other factors that go into a work, besides intent, and perhaps over and above intent.” 2:53:43 PM 12/10/01 “Linkin Park” 8:04:11 PM 12/10/01 “Beth Amsel... "the pleasure of your weathered skin, the thought of knowing thirst again and summer sere and violent across the plains." She's pretty much unknown now. I am waiting for the day when I get to say I knew her when.” 8:23:18 PM 12/10/01 oldies “lol at Walkindude & SnowNymph. I remember seeing an 8 track once, when I was a baby. And we even had a record player. You know you're old if you don't remember a time before answering machines and microwaves. oooh, and black & white TV's. Or what about this--remember when there was no such thing as HEADLAMPS?!!!” 8:30:10 PM 12/10/01 “Old headlamps were carbide lights. A source of heat, light, & oder.” 8:59:01 PM 12/10/01 “Kleetn's squirrel's hanging nuts....lol!!!!!” 9:17:23 PM 12/10/01 “My first 8 track was Styx Pcs of Eight or was it Piano man, oh I can't remember. Records, heck I must have a couple of thousand, just as the Dude. BUT....... Today I've gone digital. Still listening to the same 70's music though. Tonight it's Twilight Alehouse and other great live recordings by Genesis.” 9:50:19 PM 12/10/01 “I remember when I was about 12 and I was walking along the road coming home from the local pool. I found an 8 track of ZZ Tops Greatest hits (pre-Eliminater hits that is). Man, I loved that tape. I played it over and over. My first tape/album was Donny and Marie's Deep Purple and Captain and Toniel (sp?), both on 8 track, of course. Once a loser always a loser, ey?” 11:04:40 PM 12/10/01 “moody blues collection......... but repeatedly playing "isn't life strange" with the 'mote con-troll'.... powerful piece of music both orchestrally and lyrically speaking~~ you know, it makes me want to cry cry cryyyyyyyyyyy whoa yeah....the tympany...~~~~~~~~` (ps...fritz...if you like sarah brightman....check out "time to say goodbye" cd..most of it is in other languages....however, you hear and sense the meaning/message/sentiment of the songs quite clearly....she literally sings her heart out....) g'nite” 11:51:43 PM 12/10/01 “I just might do that, OM. Already on my Christmas list are two new artists that sounded interesting, Indie.Arie (R&B) and Rene Marie (jazz vocalist), as well as and "anything by Boccelli" since I have none yet. Perhaps I'll add "Time to Say Goodbye."” 8:08:34 AM 12/11/01 “Glad you liked it, Fritz. (Is your porn name 'Fritz, the cat?) We call him "LJ" We used to get pretty lit sitting out on the loading dock of the old cotton warehouse where we lived in the hood. I used to go and see them in concert when they were small time in Hotlanta. He came thru Sacramento a couple of years ago and I hung out with him and the rest of the band on the tour bus. What a trip! Glad to hear they have another album out.” 4:37:32 PM 12/11/01 Yes, they are musicians 8) “The Beastie Boys' French release called "In Music From the Way Out".” 8:06:43 AM 12/20/01 “Haven't listened to the Beasties in awhile - like Paul's Boutique, eggman is my fave. They are a lot more mature than their early stuff and their music covers all genres from blues sampling to Boroak (SP?), to jazz.” 8:26:08 AM 12/20/01 “Baroque?” 8:27:52 AM 12/20/01 “Not being scarcastic just wondering if that's what you meant.” 8:28:27 AM 12/20/01 “I think I've got that one? Will have to check...I haven't listened to them in ages. When I get home, I might revisit. You ever heard of the North Mississippi Allstars? Been into them lately. They rock!!” 8:28:56 AM 12/20/01 “Dukes of Dixieland” 8:31:16 AM 12/20/01 “Can't listen to music here but I've got Southern Culture on the Skids running through my head.” 8:31:19 AM 12/20/01 “I saw Skids in Knoxville for free! They were great, but I don't have any cds of them. They didn't throw any fried chicken though?” 8:32:51 AM 12/20/01 “Thank you HPM. That's what I meant. I tried my spell check but it came up with nothing. Do you think my spell check may be...baroque? Haha! I kill me!!” 8:34:35 AM 12/20/01 “Yeah, come to think of it, I heard the MAS on World Café on NPR. I can’t remember what they sounded like though. I’ll have to do some searchin’.
