Dat's what I'm talkin' 'bout! It's a great CD but Operation Mindcrime still stands as their apex.

Scrotchy-

I owe you an apology. I have given you a lot of crap over PJ's Binural CD. I've been listening to it again and it is a good CD. Sometimes if I get a CD and I'm not in the mood for it I don't like it. I just have to put it away and then pull it back out later for objectivity's sake. Just wanted to let ya know I "get it" now. :)

MONONGAHELA SAL
(Robert Schmertz -- 1947)

She was born in an old Mannessan Alley
Her Ma and her Pa named her Sal
She Grew up to be the pride of the valley
Typical Monongahela Gal

She was smart, she was pert, she was pretty
And the bloom of health was on her cheeks
But she bought it in Monongahela City
And the druggist swore that it would last for weeks

          Roll on, roll on Monongahela
Roll on past the O-Hi-O; roll past the All-i-quippy,
          Down to the Mississippi
Clear down to the Gulf of Mexico

One night Sal was strollin' by the river
When she saw the "Jason" steaming by
Her heart gave a leap and a quiver
When she spied the handsome pilot's roving eye

His name, you must know, was Moat Stanley
And he wore a fancy sporting coat
He was tall, dark and handsome, and manly
Slickest pilot ever steered a boat

          Roll On, roll on Monongahela
Where the catfish and the carp left long ago.
You used to be so pure
but now you're just a sewer
F uckin' up the Gulf of Mexico

Well, Moat gave a toot on the whistle
And the "Jason" backed water at the stern
And Sal, stepping light as a thistle
Stepped up and took Moat Stanley's hand in her'n

It was love, careless love, by the river
It was love, careless love, by the shore
And I'm sure that the good Lord will forgive her
For she never knew what love was like before

          Roll On, roll on Monongahela
Away from the ice and snow
          I think you're mighty lucky
          To roll past old Kentucky
Clear down to the Gulf of Mexico

He swore that he always would love her
As they locked through the old Amsworth dam
But that night, overboard he did shove her
And then Moat Stanley took it on the lam

Well, no one could say our Sal was sickly
She didn't even take time out to bawl
She just high-tailed it out for Souickly
Slappin' out a fast Australian crawl

So Roll on, roll on, Monongahela
And lap the waters gently at Dravo
Where they're back to making barges
          At much more normal charges
Than the LSTs they made a year ago

Then Sal jumped a freight for Rochester
She swore she would have Moat Stanley's gore
From a yard bull who tried to molest her
She went and took his great big '44

Now Sal hit the grit, right at Beaver
And the Jason was a-comin' round the bend
In the pilot house stood Moat, the gay deceiver
Says Sal, "I'm sure to get him --- in the end"

          Roll on, roll on, Monongahela
          And blow, gentle breezes, blow
          'Cause it's getting mighty smoggy
And the folks are getting groggy
I've lived here all my life and I should know

So Sal rais'd up that big shooting iron
And pumped six shots right into Moat
And when she had finished her firin'
She'd sure messed up his fancy sporting coat

Now Sal to the judge said, "Good Mornin!"
The jury foreman said," Not Guilty, Gal"
So let all you pilots take warnin'
Don't mess around Monongahela Sal!

          Roll On, roll on Monongahela
Where the catfish and the carp left long ago.
You used to be so pure
But now you're just a sewer
F uckin' up the Gulf of Mexico

COCKEYED GIRL ON THE HILL
(Traditional)

Now, she's done gone an away
Kicked th bucket yesterday
That cockeyed gal that lived upon th hill
O, she took strycnine an' died
An' I hope she's satisfied
Cause she did th whole thing 'gainst my will

She's my darling, she's my daisy
She's knockneed an' she's crazy
That cockeyed gal that lived upon th hill
O, she took strycnine an' died
And I hope she's satisfied
Cause she did th whole thing against my will

We suspected her demise
By th color of her eyes
My offer to revive her were in vain
She looked up at me an' sighed
Then turned up her nose an' died
Then raised up an' smiled an' heaved a sigh an' died again

She's my darling, she's my daisy
She's knockneed an' she's crazy
That cockeyed gal that lived upon th hill
O, she took strycnine an' died
And I hope she's satisfied
Cause she did th whole thing against my will

She said goodbye to me
As she set upon my knee
She said, she'd meet me on that golden shore
I just took her as a joke
Didn't think that she would croak
Cause, she never died so suddenly before

She's my darling, she's my daisy
She's knockneed an' she's crazy
That cockeyed gal that lived upon th hill
O, she took strycnine an' died
And I hope she's satisfied
Cause she did th whole thing against my will

Now that she has gone to rest
I'll fullfill her last request
An' plant a bunch of onions on her grave
So, that when I'm passing by
I can pucker up an' cry
Cause th dog-gone things just simply make me rave

She's my darling, she's my daisy
She's knockneed an' she's crazy
That cockeyed gal that lived upon th hill
O, she took strycnine an' died
And I hope she's satisfied
Cause she did th whole thing against my will

I LOVE AiC! Do you have any of Jerry Cantrell's solo stuff? The last one wasn't too bad.

Picked up the new Breaking Benjamin today. Not bad. Kinda sounds like if Tool and Nirvana had a baby this is what’d it sound like.

I WANNA GROW UP TO BE A POLITICIAN
(Roger McGuinn and Jacques Levy)

I want to grow up to be a politician
And take over this beautiful land
I want to grow up to be a politician
And be the old U.S. of A.'s number one man

I'll always be tough but I'll never be scary
I want to shoot guns or butter my bread
I'll work in the towns or conservate the prairies
And you can believe the future's ahead

I'll give the young the right to vote as soon as they mature
But spare the rod and spoil the child to help them feel secure
And if I win election day I might give you a job
I'll sign a bill to help the poor to show I'm not a snob

I'll open my door I'm charging no admission
And you can be sure I'll give you my hand
I want to grow up to be a politician
And take over this beautiful land

(Instrumental - Brass Band)

I'll make you glad you got me in with everything I do
And I'll defend until the end the old red white and blue
I want to grow up to be a politician
And take over this beautiful land
And take over this beautiful land
And take over this beautiful land

Nigal,
Haven't heard the Breaking Benjamin stuff. Yet. If they sound even remotely like Tool I'll be a very happy man.

Tool, especially on their earlier Undertow album, go well beyond just making ordinary, plain vanilla music. They're so dark and heavy they make your guts hurt. Then they backfill all that power with a carefully measured and understated intellect, making for an awesome brew.

Reduce the fury by 2 degrees and you have their spin-off band, A Perfect Circle.

Don't have any of J. Cantrell's solo stuff. Chris Cornell's work with Audioslave is pretty darned good, even if I was expecting them to be more angry and dark like Rage Against the Machine was. Age (and millions in a Swiss bank) seems to have mellowed everyone.

Have been through the CD a few times I’d have to say they probably wouldn’t be your cup of tea. The radio song So Cold is very Toolish but the other songs are fairly unremarkable. Good but not special.

Tool is just so sonically heavy that there’s something new to hear every time you listen to it. I remember seeing their first video from Undertow on eMpTyv. I was like, “WTF is this?”. I had never heard something so dark powerful before. That was how many years ago? And they still have not lost a thing. I also like A Prefect Circle but for different reasons than tool.

As for Chris Cornell, well, my first Soundgarden CD ruined me for life. To hear him do songs like Rusty Cage there was just nowhere to go but down. That CD was their pinnacle IMHO and never did reach the same heights sense.

"WTF is this?"
Can I get a big amen from the congregation for brother Nigal for that?!!

Like yours, my introduction to Tool came in the form the the Sober video. "WTF was that?" quickly became "I got to get more of that!". Easily ranking as one of my favorites, Tool has consistently impressed and fed my innards. The Undertow CD has the ability to worm its' way directly into my cerebral cortex where it violently stabs the puree button of a blender filled to the brim with emotional extremes and jet fuel... It's far more than just a musical experience.

Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger effort is another seriously great CD. They got it all right, every single note and lyric. Furious music, Cornell's shreeky, scary, vocals, and thought provoking ideas... "looking for a friend, with my good eye closed". Painfully deep stuff, and only because we've all been there and pretend not to have been.

Now a friend of mine, way back in Chicago --
You know, he finally made his pile.
Well he got himself a mansion on Butler and Sheff
An' he was livin' in the latest style;
But I run into him, he was eatin' in a greasy spoon
While parked in front was his big limousine.
I said, "Buddy, you've got so much money
How come you're in here, eatin' beans?"
An' he said --

After you've been havin' steak for a long time,
Beans, beans taste fine.
An' after you've been drinkin' champagne and brandy
You gonna settle for wine.
He said "The world is funny, and people are strange,
And man is a creature of constant change, and
After you've been havin' steak for a long time
Beans, beans taste fine."

Now, you know I ran into another friend of mine
In a rowdy old Clark Street Bar.
I said, "Friend, is it true what I heard about you?
I heard you married a beautiful 18-year-old shapely movie star,
Yet here you sit, tryin' to make out with some barfly
Who's too old and ugly to be true."
He said, "Shelley, you're still a very young man
So sit down. I'll explain it all to you.
He said --

After you've been havin' steak for a long time
Beans, beans taste fine.
An' after you've been drinkin' champagne and Chivas Regal
You gonna settle for Thunderbird wine.
He said "The world is funny, and people are strange,
And man is a creature of constant change, and
After you've been havin' steak for a long time
Beans, beans taste fine."

from msn:

Good records work; great records have an organic unity. By their nature, tributes can rarely be more than good records, but somehow Red Hot + Riot manages to transcend that. In part it's because it moves into uncharted territory, mixing African and African-American artists in ways that haven't happened before, all in tribute to the late Fela Kuti (an apt subject for an AIDS fundraiser, since he died of the disease). And so there's rapping over Afro-beat grooves (a refreshing change from lame hip-hop beats), jazz, and R&B, African musicians playing Afro-beat, and a whole lot more, plus some of the most conscious words you'll hear in many a year. Mix Master Mike mashes up some Fela cuts for the interludes, which makes for perfect breaks, especially the opener, which leads into the powerful "Kalakuta Show" from two members of Blackalicious. It's a record of highlights, such as the groove jam on "Water Get No Enemy," with D'Angelo, Macy Gray, Nil

SHOALS OF HERRING
(Ewan MacColl)

Oh, it was a fine and a pleasant day,
Out of Yarmouth harbor I was farin'
As a cabin boy on a sailin' lugger,
For to go and hunt the shoals of herring.

Oh, the work was hard and the hours were long,
And the treatment, sure, it took some bearin'
There was little kindness and the kicks were many,
As we hunted for the shoals of herring.

Oh, we fished the Swarthe and the Broken Bank,
I was cook and I'd a quarter sharin'
And I used to sleep standin' on my feet,
And I'd dream about the shoals of herring.

Oh, we left the home grounds in the month of June,
And to canny Shields we soon was bearin'
With a hundred cran of the silver darlins
That we'd taken from the shoals of herring.

Now you're up on deck, you're a fisherman,
You can swear and show a manly bearin'
Take your turn on watch with the other fellows,
While you're searchin' for the shoals of herring.

In the stormy seas and livin' gales,
Just to earn your daily bread you're darin'
From the Dover Straits to the Faroe Islands
As you're following the shoals of herring.

Well, I earned me keep and I paid me way,
And I earned the gear what I was wearin'
Sailed a million miles, caught ten million fishes,
We were sailin' after shoals of herring.
