wsdavies - Thanks for the info. Since I really like Dummy, I imagine I would agree with your assesment of their other albums. I'll check out their self-titled. The mood aspect -- yeah. I am in the mood for different music all the time and they're kinda like some Dylan for me, when I'm down and wanna feel just a little more down. I will also check out those other albums you mentioned. I am kinda on the edge about electronica, but some is really great.

nigal - Explain what Portishead sounds like? I really can't. You can listen to some of their tunes at their website, though.

And now, it's time for some Tom Waits.

Very groovy from what little I listened to. It reminds me of something but I can’t put my finger on it. I like there sound though. She has a good voice. I get into some females singers that are considered uncool like Dido, Buck Naked and Nelly Furtaco.

I scored gold today. I found all of Enigma’s videos for download. I snatched like 14 videos.

I have been reading this thread from the beginning, and gotta say some of y'all have some good music taste (imo). It's all about variety and I think I can take some thoughts from here and there and find some great new music.

Ok, so I'm listening to Ryan Adams (Gold) yet again. I just can't believe I never knew about him before. I mean, I have listened to Whiskeytown for years. Well, just goes to show you can't possibly know everything that's out there.

I like Elliot Smith too. Well his music anyhow. When I went to see him, he refused to stand while playing/singing. Sat in a chair and basically only the people in the first 3 rows could see him. If I wanted to just listen to Elliot Smith, I'd listen to a cd!

Currently I am listening to my new IPod, which I've only loaded a smattering of things on yet. So it's a hodgepodge of Quasi, U2 Joshua Tree, Puccini operas, Norah Jones and Stereo Total. I'm listening to it on "shuffle." Boy that's interesting...

Ah the Posies. They are great! They are a Seattle band. Nice, nice guys.

Yup
Jon was born and raised, Ken moved later from the midwest and east.

(from their website: The Posies

9. Where are Jon and Ken originally from?

Says Ken: "Although one Bellinghamster correctly identified B'ham
as our main hangout for many years, Jon & I both have several
'hometowns'. I was born in Hollywood (1968), moved to Westchester
Cty. NY, then to Glenview IL, Grosse Pointe MI, Darien CT, &
Lake Forest IL before moving to Bellingham in 1978. I moved to
Seattle in 1986, and have lived there permanently since 1987.
Jon was born on an Air Force base in Tacoma (1969), grew up
mostly in Bellingham & Seattle, but also lived in Billings MT for
a couple years. He also lived in a VW bus for a summmer traveling
to folk festivals with his family. He moved to Bellingham again
in 1981 or 1982, and moved to Seattle in 1988. My mom & his dad
still live in Bellingham (not together), his mom lives in
Seattle, and my dad lives in New Canaan CT."

You probably are thinking "Where the heck is Bellingham?" It's north of Seattle a couple of hours closer to the Canadian border. I actually saw the Posies in 1990 up in Vancouver. They were playing with a Canadian band I am really fond of.

Puccini
You two make me jealous.

Of Turandot, I only have Jussi Björling singing Nessun dorma! from Act III.

Additional Puccini in my collection is limited to all of La Bohéme and Mirian Gauci singing Un bel' Di from Madam Butterfly.

From Verdi I only have nine arias.

You two stirred me into listening to all of the above selections this morning. Pleasant listing.

After many long days of waiting my copy of Steve Vai’s Real Illusions: Reflections arrived. It seems to not only be a concept album but one in a series. The description inside says, “Reflections is the first part of a multilayered menagerie of vignettes based on the amplified mental exaggerations of a truth seeking madman who sees the world…Oh, never mind.”. It seems to really have it all plus some stuff you never expect from him. Like some horns, orchestrations and some scatting.

One of the great things I love about Steve Vai is he can make the simplest songs the most amazing. He has one song called Yai-Yai where he uses the Morley pedal to seamlessly combine his voice and the guitar in a way I’ve never heard done, even with a Vox Box. But the song is so simple.

Dylan
Listening to Love and Theft and have seen him several times but today is the first time I really listened to Sugar Baby...wow. Made me see my ex in a new light...

I got my back to the sun 'cause the light is too intense
I can see what everybody in the world is up against
You can't turn back - you can't come back, sometimes we push too far
One day you'll open up your eyes and you'll see where we are

Sugar Baby get on down the road
You ain't got no brains, no how
You went years without me
Might as well keep going now

Some of these bootleggers, they make pretty good stuff
Plenty of places to hide things here if you wanna hide 'em bad enough
I'm staying with Aunt Sally, but you know, she's not really my aunt
Some of these memories you can learn to live with and some of them you can't

Sugar Baby get on down the line
You ain't got no brains, no how
You went years without me
You might as well keep going now

The ladies down in Darktown, they're doing the Darktown Strut
You always got to be prepared but you never know for what
There ain't no limit to the amount of trouble women bring
Love is pleasing, love is teasing, love's not an evil thing

Sugar Baby, get on down the road
You ain't got no brains, no how
You went years without me
You might as well keep going now

Every moment of existence seems like some dirty trick
Happiness can come suddenly and leave just as quick
Any minute of the day the bubble could burst
Try to make things better for someone, sometimes,
you just end up making it a thousand times worse

Sugar Baby, get on down the road
You ain't got no brains no how
You went years without me
Might as well keep going now

Your charms have broken many a heart and mine is surely one
You got a way of tearing a world apart, love, see what you done
Just as sure as we're living, just as sure as you're born
Look up, look up - seek your Maker - 'fore Gabriel blows his horn

Sugar Baby, get on down the line
You ain't got no sense, no how
You went years without me
Might as well keep going now

The NY Times may still own the Net station, but basically they sold out to AOL. AOL people can listen 24/7 for free. The rest of us can listen to it or other stuff on Radio Netscape for up to two hours per day for free.

The problem is the RIAA. They want more and more money. They caused a lot of problems during the past year or two in seeking more money from Net radio stations.

Now they are seeking world wide domination: RIAA Submits Report To Federal Government Outlining Piracy Problems In More Than 60 Countries

The number of individuals sued over Napster like activities is now close to 10,000.
