I tried to find the info where I heard this from and it looks like I was wrong. It appears that Maynard's mother, Judith Marie, was a devout christian and had a stroke that disabled her. In stead of losing faith she became even more devout. If you read the lyrics of Judith and the lyrics of the Tool songs Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days they are pretty similar.
