Crampons & BootsView MessagesThe Deed Is Done..........Now The Wait Is On “Shawn at ClimbHigh.Com said they still have a few hundred of the G10s instock. He concurred that $69 (+$7s&h) was a good deal, especially since they are now selling them for the price their employees get them for.” 2:26:14 PM 11/12/03 “Buddur, I am thinking about getting a pair of these for the Daks trip. You are going on that one too, aren't you?” 2:32:44 PM 11/12/03 “Nice Buy Tom!” 2:38:12 PM 11/12/03 “I didn't read thru this whole thread (only todays posts), but I have the Grivel G10s and like them. There were places I had to 'trust my equipment' and it held up for me. Can't wait to try it out again!” 2:46:13 PM 11/12/03 “Thanks for the info, peeps. I just purchased them too...” 3:06:54 PM 11/12/03 OK....Here's My Plan “Yeah Tree, I'll be on the Daks trip. I have Wed off also and am heading up early and hiking in to the base of Allen on Wed, summiting Thurs morning then moving camp closer to the trailhead, then hiking back out on Fri only to drive down the road to hike into Bradley Pond to meet y'all for the Santanoni excursion. I've heard Allen already has ice, and crampons will be necessary in upper elevation spots...so now I'm set. If you or Buddha can and want to join, lemme know.” 3:18:19 PM 11/12/03 “I will be coming up with Tom on Friday. If I skip out on Thanksgiving my 86 year old mother will castrate me.” 3:20:23 PM 11/12/03 “Whoa Mule!!! You would then be a gelding!” 3:23:05 PM 11/12/03 “No matter what boots you have or what type of bindings you get, I'd still want to try them out before buying them. Even the best matches come loose from time to time and a lot is riding on having your crampons stay in place. I don't see a situation where I'd ever want a full foot aluminum crampon. For level ground on slippery surfaces, an instep crampon yields lighter weight than a full foot aluminum model, extra traction, and less foot fatigue that comes from your foot having to flex the frame all day. On steeper terrain, the extra points of full frames gives you more purchase French styling, but for rock sections you need steel to keep the points sharp. With full framed aluminum models, I think you get the worst of both worlds, extra weight and foot strain, too soft to stay sharp. I have a pair of Grivel G-12's and like them for hard ice on steep ground, but wish I had some instep crampons for less demanding terrain. I think once you spend a day in full frame steel points, razor sharp bear claws spiking out all over your feet, you'll agree that the instep models have their uses too. The major downside I see with insteps is that you don't get the "launch" off your toes when walking that full foot models give you. haven't tried them, but I think it might make for an awkward walking motion by the end of a long day.” 4:10:10 PM 11/12/03 “I have the G-10's and use them on a leather backpacking boot. The G-10's have horizontal rails and with a leather boot with some sole flex, balling will be minimal, but that depends on the temps and snow conditions. If I'm doing serious mountaineering, I have a pair of Charlet Moser's on a pair of Scarpa Invernos. Different crampons on way different boots for way different purposes...” 5:17:10 PM 11/12/03 “Is the Grivel G-10 made of steel?” 7:43:12 AM 11/13/03 “I believe G10's are made of steel; Grivel make both steel and alu models. Buddur, I think the BD Contacts would be perfect. Get the large for when you change to bigger boots (it will happen).” 7:49:16 AM 11/13/03 “I see that they are "one size". Will those things fit a size 13 boot?” 7:53:43 AM 11/13/03 “They go up to 335 mm, TT. i think that translates to about a 13...” 8:16:38 AM 11/13/03 “My Euro Trash shoes are a size 47.” 8:29:03 AM 11/13/03 “Then my suggestion would be to visit a construcion site and grab some scrap metal and crazy glue it to your big ass feet, you freakin' yeti!” 8:35:20 AM 11/13/03 Stumpy Bastids ! “335 mm = 13.199 inches. My shoes are about 13.375 inches. The boots......I don't know, but chances are they are no shorter than my walkin' shoes. I had better forget about mail order.” 8:46:00 AM 11/13/03 “lmao treebeard!” 9:08:32 AM 11/13/03 “Oh yeah, what are YOU usin' for feet, Bear?” 9:13:28 AM 11/13/03 “Those are some big feet TT. My Grivel G-12's will accomodate a shoe 13.5 inches, but only if it is the same width as my size 10.5 boots. I'm suspecting your midsize yachts will be wider and less accomodating. When (if) you find some points to fit those shoes, you can always order them online, but I'd definitely want some firsthand experience with crampon fit on shoes that big before plunking down any cash.” 9:34:57 AM 11/13/03 “12” 10:21:52 AM 11/13/03 “I wear a 13 B. There is REI and EMS and HTO(Hudson Trial Outfitters) all within a few miles of here. I go try on....” 10:29:27 AM 11/13/03 “G10's are steel. I just adjusted mine out to the full extension and they will accomodate a boot up to 14.5 inches long. I wear a size 11 boot with them and there's an inch and a half left for extension.” 3:35:33 PM 11/13/03 “That's great, Cairn (Since I bought them on line yesterday and my foot is the same size as yours) Thanks” 3:40:13 PM 11/13/03 GrivelG10NewClassicCramponsAreSteel...AndASteal “Yes the G10s are steel. You know how mahy sites I had to look at before one of them states the features and specifies the metal??? Too many, I tell ya! I asked the dood at ClimbHigh.Com and he verified they are steel. And Gremlin, I got the G10s, which from what I read are similar to the BD Contacts, simply because they were onsale. I can't wait to try them on. From some reviews I've read, if they don't fit that well ya may have some problems keeping them on yer boots. We'll see.” 6:11:36 PM 11/13/03 “I sent Cottonsocks to get crampons. She calls and it goes like this: CS: Honey, I am at the store, what kind do you want? Chili: Instep crampons CS: They don't have those? Chili: What do they have? CS: I don't know, they only have one kind. Chili: I am busy, I will talk to you later.” 3:01:22 PM 2/18/05 “was she standing in the femine hygene aisle at the time?” 3:15:46 PM 2/18/05 “I figure I will get 8 RC Cola bottlecaps held together with kite string for crampons. Oh, and a receipt for about $75.00” 3:17:06 PM 2/18/05
