Thruhiker.com has 6inch and 7inch Ti stakes pretty cheap.

The hardened Al stakes are OK too (Kelty No-bendums were on sale at REI.com)

If you've ever pinched a tent pole at the connection point, you'll know why having pliers in the woods makes sense.

I agree with the sentiment that, generally, lightweight items and simplicity seem to go hand in hand. A few of my favorite lightweight/easy-to-use items include:

Lightweight cook setup (inc. cat can stove, stand, locking pot grippers, aluminum pot, ti spork, and aluminum plate/lid)

Tent Poles
Since I started using trekking poles I leave the tent poles at home. Keep in mind this only applies to short straight poles, not the flexible ones used in dome tents.

I also use only one detergent for all of my washing needs, personal washing and doing dishes. Sunlight in a small squeeze bottle is a good dish cleaner and leaves me smelling lemony fresh.

Tahoe, some minor changes in your cooking arrangements and you'll not even have to carry detergent on the trail.

I provided this commentary under another subject, camp chairs, so I hope no one minds the repeat. When I camp on the AT in PA, I pack along a closed cell gardener's kneeling pad. It's 1"x8"x15" and weighs 3oz. I purchased it (two pack) at a local Kmart. It slips neatly between the bottom compartment framepack and my sleeping bag. There are very few soft spots to sit on along our section of the AT, and this item comes in very handy wherever we sit, including rock chairs around the fire ring. Light weight and cheap.

WOW

Just tried one of those Cool Mint Listerine Oral Care Strips , and WOW do those things pack a punch. If they really do sanitize like they say, they'd be a great extra added item for ontrail oral hygene after brushing.

My favorite lightweight items are:

1. 19 oz. GoLite pack

2. 1 lb. silnylon tarp

3. 2 lb. 14 oz. down bag

These three items alone shaved 10 pounds off my pack weight.

The 1-2-3 numbers make my message confusing. Should be:

19 oz. GoLite pack

1 lb. silnylon tarp

2 lb. 14 oz. down bag

How 'bout tooth powder?
Haven't tried the strips yet. I use dental powder instead of toothpaste. Lighter, and I put it in a small container and take only what I need. Don't need much. I can spit it out (more info than you need) instead of rinsing with ice cold water. Jes make sure you don't accidentally tip the container over, or open it up when its windy. If you do, make sure your partner has extra to borrow.

Tooth Powder
Where do you buy tooth powder? Is it just dried out toothpaste?

It's usually near the toothpaste. You can also use baking soda but it tastes nasty.
