Field test all your gear before you start, and know how to repair it. The last thing you need is a failure between Iraq and a hard place, or gear that never gets used. The same goes for yourself: know your limits, and know how to heal yourself.

You've never backpacked before. YOu need to start out small, it may not be for you. Go for a couple of weekend trips, then a week or two, more than once. Then you'll have a much better idea whether "trekking across the world" is something you'd be able to enjoy.

sorry, my opinion of you just weakened
hey Fritz, how do you know balgar has never bped before?

I already don't like the idea. A spiritual journey such as this can only be commenced for one reason--and that is NOT to document it and put it on the web...

She mentioned it in another thread. I think the plant guidebook one.

I think she is setting herself up for failure and embarrassment if she doesn't get some safe, cheap, local experience before setting out to onquer the world.

Eve, fearless is good (mostly) but don't be foolish. That's where fearless can get bad. Right now, you don't even know what questions to ask...

I mean no offense. I hope none is taken.

For what it's worth.
If you can listen to all the people telling you not to go, and then still go, you may (MAY) have the right attitude. But listen carefully to their reasoning.

Based on a year in the middle of China:

You must be able to remain positive in very trying situations, and you must be able to trust your partner. You also must be constantly aware of your surroundings, know your limitations, and have great instincts (called reading body language) for when to be assertive and when to be humble (the latter is usually the best). If you have those going for you, then being "fearless" might work.

Oh, and travel as light as possible. It's hard to watch all your cool gear when you've got to go into a squat pot with the inevitable runs.

BTW, do you mind bugs and such?

Define "world".....won't this involve at least 3/4 of your time trying to get across water?????

life challenges
wow i should b killed-how dumb can i get ? perhaps I should try some heroin?or a vibrator?
no that's not right either.
i accept that i may b faced w/experiences where dreams may b turned into possibilities, & possibilities b firmed up into probabilities, & w/an outcome in practical reality. But each time it will mean finding the courage to act in accordance w/one's own inner knowledge. I like to bear in mind the motto of the British SAS-'Who dares, Wins'.
my teamate
'i feel i am pretty damn trustworthy, my limitations are what i make them. my limitations are what i simply refuse and instinct has kept me alive this far and with no broken bones.
failure is something i struggle not to find, and embarassment comes only through mis-judgement and poor decisions.

If any of that advice seemed like an attack or a putdown, maybe you are a bit oversensitive. And that is not going to serve you well in foreign countries with widely differing cultures and customs. Getting defensive and being offended that easily can get you killed in many parts of the world. You may want to work on that before you go.

All I can say is get out and do it becuase you only live once. But make shure you don't leave anything undone at home becuase later down the line it can come back to haunt you.

happy hiking......:)

And go over everthing tons of times you can never be to shure.

http://home.earthlink.net/~earthwalker1/Dave Kunst is the first person verified to have completed circling the entire land mass of the earth (with exception of the oceans) on foot.
The Earthwalker carried a torch in the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay and he is featured in the 1997 Guinness Record Breakers Book. With help from his brothers John and Pete, and Jenni Samuel, an Australian School Teacher, Dave walked 14,450 miles round the planet earth. See a map of the route taken.

I recently read World Walker, by Steve Newman. In his experience one must be prepared to go to jail for being a spy or a journalist if you want to carry cameras and logs and papers with names and information written on them. He also seemed hungery alot and had very little privacy. On the other hand what an adventure! I would imagine you and your navy seal will be separated by police for questioning. And you must be prepared to be on your own. There are many places in the world I would not(being female) like to be, let alone,be alone. Risks I'm sure you've pondered-but the book was a eye opener.

I don't think going with a stranger is a good idea
The first guys who did it had the right idea. Go with relatives. They're the only ones you can trust to not ditch you somewhere when they get tired of your whining (and there will be a lot of whining)..or sell you for a new mule Ü

balgair sounds much like tarpie. Go into the woods with nothing but a book and wonder as you lay there dieing, helpless to save yourself because of your ignorance.

I hope you're in excellent shape. Once you add the laptop, cell phone, digital camera, etc. to your necessities, you're gonna be hurtin.

Good luck!
