"Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer might also be a good read. It is the sad story of a likable, fun-spirited, adventurous kid that hiked into the Alaskan wilderness with about 5 lbs of rice and his Poly-Sci degree. He passed away in the harsh winter. He just wasn't prepared for the weather.

Bal's too sensitive
Hee hee Radagast, that was funny...learn English first.

Big Coop, I read about that kid who died in Alaska...I'm not too sure, I don't think he even had a map...or he losted it or it disintergrated over time. He carried a .22 rifle though. Sad thing was that he was only a few miles from a ranger station, and he didn't know it.

Oh well, maybe it was better for the gene pool.

Balgair79, after I read your last few posts, I feel you're too sensitive and tempermental...not good signs for an isolated long trip in different countries (with or without a companion). A lot of people here have years of experience and they're giving you advise...but you only think they're attacking you...you have an attitude. Just my $.02.

If you are at a time in your life that you can actually afford to do this and you have the time, I say go for it! There have been more than a few people buy some gear and hike for a few days and then decide to do the whole AT. Attitude can carry you a long way, just fill in the cracks with smarts. When undertaking huge feats like this it is good to take things in small chunks…get to the next county and go from there…get to the next state and go from there…get to the next country and go from there. It can help you from becoming overwhelmed. Don’t worry about the final goal, just focus on the next day. The goal will come.

Not to end on a negative but, you really do need to have a contingency plan if your partner and you do part ways during the trip. Best friends and married folks have broken up during much smaller feats.

Heck, you might find that you can't live without your partner when the trip is over.

It is a cool idea though. Best of luck.

I think starting in North America would be an excellant idea. Good plan to be close to home just in case it's not what you expected.

Eve, there's alot of great information to glean from this site but you have to sift through tons of teasing, bull#&%!$ and opinions. Not everyone in your life will be excited or supportive of such a trip plan, get used to it and learn to either ignore comments you don't care for or reply in kind. When are you planning on starting this tour?

balgair79, dont take all the jibbing personally. Except if bacpac posts, he REALLY means it! LOL

Having REALLY thick skin may help you out. Inevitably you will be in some distant stinkhole where everyone has an AK-47. They will also be wearing raybans and super-silly looking military outfits. They will also be 14 years old. Getting all defensive may not be the most effective approach.

Just pack your crap and start walking.

Maybe read "HOLIDAYS IN HELL" by PJ O'Rourke. Its a funny read about being a tourist in Beirut, the Phillipines,S.Africa and other really HOT tourist sites.

EMAIL FROM DAVE KUNST HERE!!!!
Eve,
I say if Dave Kunst can walk around the world he can do anything and so
can you!
We had a thousand dollars and we planned to camp out and cook out but
have a look at this link on my web page to see how I made it. If you do
not have back-up I think a mule is essential and the other ideas helped
too.

May the spirit of adventure be with you!
Good luck.
Dave

balgair--back to the spiritual journey aspect of i
Not attacking you, just asking questions here.

1. I would like to know why you think this would not be a spiritual journey.

You are definetely going to find out a lot about yourself, people of different religions, customs, cultures, etc.

2. Why post it on the web? If you have a good reason I will withdraw my 'my opinion of you just weakened' comment.

Yeah, I can see her getting right on through Asia with that attitude! Walking in one side and getting laughed out the other!

She wasn't looking for advice, she was looking for a cheerleading squad. When she started getting real advice that suggested she might not be ready for such a journey, she reacted to it in a hostile manner so she could maintain her fantasy.

I doubt she made it out the door of her house.
