One heck of a Trip Report
This is a dramatic trip report from someone who was stuck on Mt. Lafayette over night due to a sudden White Out. Having been up on Lafayette with some TT'ers (Mad, SirPete, and AmyG) this summer and planning some winter hiking in the area made this aprticularly compelling reading. But, its well written:

Yes, that's a great story.

I, also, was on that mountain just 8 weeks ago, in a storm. It was much warmer, of course, 15 to 25 degrees, but windier, 45 to 65 mph. We had mostly sleet to deal with but the visibility at times was very poor, and the trail did get quite icy.

So I know exactly the place these guys were. Doesn't sound like they had a fun night, but they do have a great story to tell.

Correction to my post, I don't think it was any warmer when I was there although this guys doesn't say what the temp was for him. I had the advantage that there was not any snowcover, and there was a pretty good crowd of other hikers up there if anything had gone wrong.

Franconia Notch
As you already know Pedxing, Franconia Notch is an interesting place. It can be sunny on both sides of the Notch, yet experiencing blizzard conditions in the notch. There are at least 5 rescues each winter by the Fish and Game department in the Notch.

Hey, PedXing,

I'm interested in dooing some winter hiking in the Whites and am currently lacking a partner. I have all the gear (4 man expedition tent), but usually prefer to bivy in the Dacks. Please get back to me if you need a partner (click on my bio).

Hey Gremlin. I am wanting to do some winter camping. I'll send an email. I also know some great folks who were talking about a trip I can't go on. If you don't mind, I'll let 'em know about your post.

I am heading to an unnamed mt in Vermont ( It's only unnamed because I am going with others and I don't know which one yet) on Saturday before New Years for a one day peak bag. On Saturday night I am heading over to Crawford Notch to hike up to Ethan Pond or Zealand hut depending on the weather and the trail.
I will be staying up there until Monday afternoon.

Sounds like an awesome weekend Pete. I'm out of vacation for the year but I'm dying to get up there and try some snowshoeing. You really like your Atlas 1033's?

yeah the do me well. I rented a pair of them from the pack shack in the gap and did a trip with them up in the Catskills last year. I liked them so much I bought a pair off him. Easy on easy off and aren't too heavy.

Cool, I didn't know there was a gear shop in town. Everytime I get near DWG, I get morphed directly to the bakery/fudge shop next to the diner and everything else is a blurr.

that they rent
