HTML Question/Permission

Suppose on my webpage, I wanted to list the 'TOP 3' threads from THIS webpage. Something on the order of pages I have seen where this is the 'late breaking news headlines'.

1) I would need Matt's permission, right? Cos it would steal bandwidth?

2) Provided condition #1 was met: only if Matt did give me permission) -- What sort of code would be required to create a dynamic link that would show those top (most recently revised) 3 threads?

If you get the last ten and change the color to,..er,.. lets say green and get a link up I`m in, I won`t come back here at all, I`m lost here anyway now and I can`t go back and find old threads, I might as well be someplace new.

No, the real issue is content and credit for the content not bandwidth.

Oh I know you guys would.

I used to have all kinds of stuff on my troop's website but I found out other sites would link into my information and display it in a frame without my headers, naviagtion or footer and claim it as their own. I wouldn't have minded them usung it if they gave us credit.

Oh well, I just coded in a framebuster that disables the back button from taking you back to that site.

It would be pretty easily done with a pearl script but the problem is you would have to load it onto a web server with the right server extensions. Basically you would just have the script reference the page and output to a three text lines that would show the title of the thread and link to it.

I can't believe it. I actually felt my eyes glaze over. Now I know how my son feels when I start talking about protein translation!

I can't code in pearl either, but I've seen similar stuff done before. I do know somebody that knows how to do it though.

ask the question to your friend if you would.. and if we can get code that works, I can ask Matt for his permission.

I'm thinking .... There are ways that I can give you the code to do that. Right now I am just trying to weigh the benefits/downfalls.

Matt, the site is PHP now isn't it? I'm thinking it was jsp or asp before but can't remember.

Thanks Matt. I appreciate your consideration. It may be a bad idea, but I was thinking it might be a nice touch for my website, since I seem to hover over here quite a bit.. and might encourage some others to come..

heh.. just what you need ehh?.. lots more HITs?.. prolly not.. unless of course they click on an AD.. and ultimately buy?.. :)

Kinda reminds me of a language invented by 3 famous scholors more than 50 years ago: Moe...O-May, Larry...Arry-Lay, Curly...Curly-Q!!

HPM: ok ok.. 'GEEKlish' it is, but I still think some of us would enjoy having the top three TT threads pushed to our respective pages.

And now that I know Matt has it under consideration, I am happy with waiting.

:)

I speak geeklish quite often. Heck, It's how I pay for gear (and everything else for that matter.)
