Tarabull proclaimed "let there be a thread for a hike in Jan/Feb in Michigan", and there was....

And the thread was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.

I was gettin' a little worried that no one would notice the thread. Le Sub - have you ever been to the High Country Pathway?

Mike? Now that we got your geographic region down.. Are you going to the 'Holiday Hike' we pointed you to? Are you keeping up with that thread?

This is some of the SAME people. If you are lucky, they MIGHT let you hike with them...

Read for a while, LURK, let the local TT'ers decide upon their itinerary, and THEN express your interest.

You got a hike coming up in December with the same group. Have you gotten all the particulars you need on THAT trip, before you go wading into another?

(what'ya think?)

the way to keep informed on this board is to inform yourself. its really not everyone else's responsibility to keep YOU informed.

Mike - Don't worry. We'll keep you informed. The details for the hike later this month are on the Christmas hike in Michigan thread. Fort Custer is the place. Go there and find out if you can make it. Post your interest, and as it gets closer, someone will do a final list of everyone whos coming and last minute details.

This hike for Jan/Feb is still undecided. We are looking for a place to hike at in lower MI. Anything you can suggest? Right now, I'm thinking about the High Country Pathway in upper lower MI. There are some other trail that run into it and I think we might be able to get a 20 miler outta it. Might have too much snow down, though. I don't want to run out and buy snowshoes. Anyone if REI will rent them?

Hey AG - Anything out your way?

Sass, that wasn't very nice!

Laqtis, REI's snowshoes are something like $15 for the whole weekend. Not a bad deal.

Thanks Sass, Smily - 15 bones I can handle. Hope they don't have a "you brok'em, you bought'em policy. Speaking of REI, anyone remember when that garage sale is this month?

Getting back to business, I'll be looking at the books this weekend is see what we might be able to do for that hike. I'm still new at trip planning, so any help would be great.

Laqtis - as I mentinoed on the other thread... I am very new to this. I need you and other experienced winter TTrs to help me out. Take me hiking!!!

How deep does the snow need to be to require snowshoes?

A very wise person suggested to me that I test the waters by doing a weekend car camp trip to make sure I have everything I need. Sounds like a very smart suggestion. Perhaps that is where I should start? I have a friend w/ property in Blanchard (that is near Mt Pleasant) we could use. Anyone intersted? It's close to Deerfield County Park.

I'd still like to do a backpack trip. Maybe camping in Jan, backpacking in Feb? Who is up for it?

I'd car camp first with you. Birch says he'll watch the baby!!!!

I'll come visit while you car camp - then take the 15 minute drive to my parent's house. :)

Blanchard has lots of Amish - a whole "downtown" area for shopping and a nice restaurant. Fun to stop in there sometimes!

Wow, you'd sink to our level, LS? What a guy!

What weekend works for everyone in January? 3rd weekend?

Not much to his property. A "lean-to" (which I helped to build!), a fire pit, an outhose that leans like The Tower of Pisa (and doesn't have a door) and a small creek that is likely to be frozen. Other than that, it is 40 acres of fields and trees. Plenty of space to set up tents.

This is one of Sadie's favorite places!!

That sounds like a good idea. I'm not that experianced myself and if there is anything I've learned, it's not to take any unnessary risks. Maybe doing the High Country Pathway would be a good trip for early springtime. For backpacking the next trip, like in Feb, maybe we could just go to Waterloo and hike back into the Green Lake campground from Headquarters. Just an idea.

The January 3rd weekend would work for me, but I have to see how it goes with the Christmas hike. I don't want to burden with wife with watching my son alot over our vaction. Plus, I get to missin' that boy if I'm not around alot!

Le Subtil - which part of the High Country Pathway did you do? I hear that they have some areas on that trail that have massive sink holes that you can look at.

Alright, I'm an idiot. The 3rd weekend in January. Not Jan 3rd weekend. I got it. That would be the weekend of the 18/19/20th, right?

Thanks for the help, birch.

now that i am thinking about it, anyone into bushwacking? this camp i work at has like 700 acres of backlands that we could go play on, we might even be able to ride the zip line, 40 feet high and 750 feet long, 35 miles an hour(running this stuff was my job for the summer), or we could even play around on the indoor climbing wall!

ah, the office pogroms

Hey, I heard today that the park in Novi that was to be given to a developer was saved. There is also some planning going on to buy an old ski hill for trails in Oakland County. Check out the bulletin board on the mmba.org for details. Mountain bikers are our friends.

If ya plan on camping the third weekend of January, let me know. I'll send an email w/ directions (don't think I'll post them for the whole world to see since it's not my place!)

jcfreak - if you're coming, I'll need your email. I didn't see it listed on your bio. Send me an email so I have it.

So far, it sounds like the following people are going:

Sass
Birch
Le Subtil
Laqtis

Cow Patty?
jcfreak4life?

Max and I.
