Cool Campsites

“Let me know about your most interesting campsites. Tell me about the scenery and or crazy animals encounters. Was it near a pleasant water source? Were you forced to share it with other unwanted guest? As for myself, I really don’t remember the bad ones all that well, typically because I arrived after dark and left before daylight. To keep this short, my favorite site was where I spent two nights below Haystack Mt (Chinese Wall) along the White River in MT. Beautiful mts, great cool weather, mule deer and elk everywhere. Closer to home, Sipsey (AL) has a several of great campsites above and below nice waterfalls. Oh yeah, has any one ever camped up in an abandon fire tower? Albert Mt in NC has one that looks cool.”

Esp Alice Lake or Twin Lakes.

Cascade Canyon, Tetons. Beautiful creek surrounded by mountains and lots of wildlife.

Lower (yadda yadda) Lake, Wind River Range, WY. I camped on a high bluff overlooking the lake. Gorgeous sunrise, and even better Alpine glow created by the previous night's moonset. The bluff sits upon the cliff that Belle fell off of.”

Favorite campsite; Prolly along the Grizzly Bear Creek Trail in the Black Hills.”

“This might be my favorite spot in the Cascades. A long 8 mile walk in to a U-shaped hanging valley with waterfalls spilling off of the cliffs nearby. Lots of wildflowers were out and there is a perfect campsite very close to a snow-fed creek. Gorgeous weather, snow on the peaks surrounding us.

Only saw one other person and he wanted to share our little piece of heaven, but the guy I was with discouraged him from throwing his tent down. We sunbathed in the glorious sunshine and sat out under the stars half the night drinking wine. We dayhiked to two different lakes up above us on the two days we were there. I can't wait to go back again.”

“It WAS, Fritz. And the amazing thing was we only saw the one other person (except at the trailhead). And no BUGS! ;)”

“Rhodes Meadows -- long valley surrounded by 8,000 ft. peaks filled with wildflowers and a meandering stream with no trail access (so very few other people even know of it).

Morris Lake -- narrow finger of a peninsula jutting into the lake with a small copse of trees at the end. Pitch a tent in the midst of the trees for shade and a 360 degree lake view.

Long Lake, Caribou Wilderness -- 40 acre lake with a small unnamed island. Wade across shallow water to the island.”

“Campsite #6 on the Manistee river trail.The view is real cool.Or a clear night on the beach at nordhouse dunes wildreness.”

Actually-My uncle took us a site above Yellowtail Dam in Montana-
Took a boat to what looked like the headwaters--It was cool-but would it count? It was the one an only time my mother went...if it makes any difference.”

“Hike for 2 hours over the star dune in the Great Sand Dunes and then down into the sand box. camp anywhere and just listen to the wind and watch the stars and satellites. No people, no bugs, just you, the wind and God.”

One question though. Why did you pitch the tent on top of the rock?”

“I think that looks cool....:)”

“It's hard to tell in the photo, but the rock is almost perfectly flat, like it was cut with a band saw...the webbing in the photo holds out the vestibule and the rear tie out is anchored to a crack below the rock...we pitched it there because it just seemed neat.

The only problem was early in the morning you had to be careful you didn't slip on the ice and fall off the rock...also just getting to the tent required a minor 5.7 boulder problem ( to do it with style)”

What kind of hiker gives away favorite locations on the internet? Next time you visit you won't be able to lie down because of all the fire rings. The guy who started this thread could be working for "Outside".
