where to hike?

“Where would be a good place on the Appalachian trail to hike during the end of May. We want to end up doing about 100 miles.”

“IMO you would have a less than great time in Maine in May - New Hampshire is also somewhat questionable - the reason - black flies and probably full streams. However looking on the bright side - the shelters would be empty up there (grin).”

“The end of May is beautiful in Shenandoah NP and there is 101 miles of the AT running through it. I might do that trip myself. Some do not like that the AT crosses Skyline Drive several times but it's no big deal to me.”

“I did about 40 miles of the AT in GSMP in May of this year. The weather was just about perfect for hiking, although a bit wet.”

“If you had said the middle of May, I would've recommended Mt Rogers, Virginia. Great views, wild horses, and a great time to meet lots of cool people, 'cause that's when the annual Appalachian Trail Days is held (next year's event will be from May 11 - 19)
The event takes place in Damascus, Va (a small town close by the AT), and is not to be missed if you are an avid hiker/backpacker.”
