where to hike
Where would be a good place on the Appalachian trail to hike during the end of May. We want to end up doing about 100 miles.

For me if I could go it would be somewhere in Maine.

IMO you would have a less than great time in Maine in May - New Hampshire is also somewhat questionable - the reason - black flies and probably full streams. However looking on the bright side - the shelters would be empty up there (grin).

The end of May is beautiful in Shenandoah NP and there is 101 miles of the AT running through it. I might do that trip myself. Some do not like that the AT crosses Skyline Drive several times but it's no big deal to me.

I did about 40 miles of the AT in GSMP in May of this year. The weather was just about perfect for hiking, although a bit wet.

If you had said the middle of May, I would've recommended Mt Rogers, Virginia. Great views, wild horses, and a great time to meet lots of cool people, 'cause that's when the annual Appalachian Trail Days is held (next year's event will be from May 11 - 19)
The event takes place in Damascus, Va (a small town close by the AT), and is not to be missed if you are an avid hiker/backpacker.

"the Appalachian trail .. the end of May. .. end up doing about 100 miles."

What do you like best? Strenous climbing, or running the ridges?
