I Found An ArrowheadView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 14 of 14 messages posted.
“OK. So I'm almost done with my hike and heading back to the van singing out loud... There was a farmer who had a dog and Buddur was his name-o b - u - d - d - u - r etc. etc... And to my embarrasment, I came across another hiker out in what seemed like the middle of nowhere...and he was the first person who got to see the arrowhead I found an hour earlier. I was in an area where one of my geocaches is stashed and was ambling in that general direction when I saw in the distance two other hikers. So i didn't run into them I made my way upslope and lost them in the valley. While hiking along the valley edge I spotted an unusual stone in the bare ground. Sure enough it turned out to be a broken arrowhead, broke across where the ffins are near the back. It has sserrated edges” 5:21:18 PM 12/15/01 “I didn't mean to hit that button...yet! Anywho... Did I mention I felt pretty much like a dick when that dood heard me singing that tune?” 5:22:22 PM 12/15/01 “...and if it weren't for those two hikers I came up on, I'd've never taken the path that lead me to the find. Turned out they were heading to my geocache, and I got to it about a half hour after they left.” 5:24:41 PM 12/15/01 “Cool. Birch is itchin to get his hands on his gps. He says he'll be needing some tutoring!” 6:09:24 PM 12/15/01 Lucky You “Go buy a lotto ticket” 7:43:14 PM 12/15/01 “Glad you found an arrowhead, Buddur. I'm sure the dog enjoyed your song, even if you were embarassed. I like to sing Clementine, and I would be embarassed too if someone caught me.” 6:45:46 AM 12/16/01 “Buddur- Are you any good? One of my favorite marching songs is "Theme For An Imaginary Western", by Jack Bruce also covered by Leslie West and Mountain. "When the wagons leave the city Chorus- Big guitar solo, etc That arrow head was a real cosmic find having altered your path like that.” 2:09:41 PM 12/16/01 “Last year, Backpacker magazine had an article in it about how to find meteorites on the trail. I never found any yet. There was an outdoor show on TV last year and they said most arrowheads are found near rivers since Native Americans stayed near waterways. Did you find it near a waterway?” 2:35:08 PM 12/17/01 Put it back “Put it back or the archeology police and the Tribe will be after you. (That comment is to be taken lightly. But seriously I leave Indian artifacts where they lie.) Sing on!” 3:44:42 PM 12/17/01 “I like to sing "Clementine' like Huckleberry Hound. Then it doesn't matter how bad I sound, it's supposed to be that way! Oh, my...Oh, my... Oh, my dahrhrhrhrhlin' Clem-men-tyin'” 3:52:53 PM 12/17/01 “Or was that "Quicks Drawl" Mcgraw??? I'm so confused.” 4:07:36 PM 12/17/01 “I found a perfect speer point years ago when I was about 12. I was standing on a muddy creek bank fishing and it was right under my feet when I looked down, not two feet from the water. It has serrated sides and is about 4" long. I look for them in every disked field since then and have 15 or so including a fine scraper and a drill. Cool stuff.” 4:16:59 PM 12/17/01 Poetic meter “Don't you have trouble fitting a six-letter name into a song designed for five? Keep the arrowhead, somebody has to pick up after the litterers.” 6:00:38 PM 12/17/01 “Geez, I posted to this thread about three days ago...least I THOUGHT I did (Twilight Zone theme here) I kind of said the archeology police thing. You really should just leave it, but I know.........hehehee... On the farm where I grew up, we found them in fields all the time. Even more than arrowheads. Like a stone with indentations for what I presumed to be leather straps criss-crossing on it, to hold it to a handle. I'm trying to remember now if it was an axe?? The edge was not sharp; then again, it's been maybe 500 years, huh?? Arrowheads are great! I told the University of Iowa about the "finds" on the farm when they were around here excavating an Indian campsite from around the 1800s, I believe. Interesting history around here. A fort was built, Fort Atkinson, to help keep peace between two warring tribes. Now they're excavating an old mission site by a river, and this camp that seemed to be on a trading route. Since this was from a later era, more modern things were found. Like a part of a glass doll. They've excavated there the past two summers. I meant to get involved but haven't, other than doing a story and taking some pictures the first summer. I'd love to see them go at it on my old farm!! The archeologist said he checked maps, and nothing had ever been logged as to any kind of site there. I think they'd find a lot!! And I should do more research on where Indian lived here, to help pinpoint where the village or camp might have been.” 8:42:15 AM 12/18/01
