I was just enjoying my first snow hike of the season today when I noticed something unusual on a big boulder - a small painted rock. It was artfully decorated in Native American style and looked like the head of a crazy-looking bird. It was really, really cool.

The temptation to take the thing home and put it on the mantelpiece was great, but I figured the days of work it took to paint it meant it should stay for others to look at.

But I thought it was cool that someone would put so much time into creating a small serendipitous moment for me.

So, anyone else spot any trail picassos out there?

There is a place not far from my home that I walk my dog, someone has taken it upon themselves to build sculptures out of piles of rocks and stones...they never seem to stay the same for long, I suspect people add a stone here and a stone there...I make a point of going past them just to see what's there that day.

On the side of the road to Burney a local has painted the side of a rock to look just like Snoopy.

I also have a friend that is truly an artist, during the winter she leaves snow sculptures along side the trail...not just little snowmen, but bunnies, rabbits, and birds to give a few examples. The detail is quite amazing (especially with good snow)....beats the heck out of the "snow fingers" I would leave for my partners.

I was hiking some trails around Hot Springs, Arkansas and saw where someone had carved a cross into a stump with a chainsaw.

M.R.
I was hiking somewhere in S.D. a few years back and came out into this opening and someone had carved a bunch of peoples faces in a big rock. They kind of looked like presidents?

We were sitting in Little Eden Hot Tub (Sierras, CA), and noticed some art work on the sides of the tub

Once found a full size loveseat made of sand on a Lake Michigan beach, N. Manitou island.

I once found a pyramid of beer cans circled by cigarette butts.
