This weekend's trip with Mike's club was our first group backpacking trip and it was great. Definately have to say that you can't find a nicer group of people to go out with. Thanks again all for the good time!!

BTW...rumor has it that the EPA and FDA are fighting over who get's to test Mike's Tang bottles first!!

Cleaned the garage
on Saturday. Made sure to put all the gear in one place, the backpack is ready for a quick getaway.

Went on a "rehab" hike this afternoon. Wow, my knee is still hurting! Felt good to get out and loosen it up though.

Went alpine skiing Sat. and went xc skiing Sun. The xc skiing sucked because it drizzled during the week, and the trails refrozed.

Thank God for helmets!
I was getting on the chair lift, and with the two guys to the right of me weighing ~300 lbs, the chair was too high and I caught it with one arm & my butt cheek. I tried to pull up, then felt the board tug at my leg. Next thing I knew I hit my head on the ground and felt it get hot. I thought I busted my head open. Geez!

It snowed the rest of the day, and all day Sunday. Wanted to get first tracks, so we were on the lifts at 8:30am. The snow was so good we rode til 4:25pm, didn't stop for lunch. The lifts closed at 4, but we caught the last ride up, then went through some fresh powder in the trees and I got stuck. After fighting it, I rolled til I got out of it.

Now that I'm home, I'm feeling it. My neck muscles (ear to collar bone) and back of neck are pretty sore. My abs hurt when I cough. My rib cage and back hurt when I take deep breaths. I'm just glad I was wearing a helmet!

It was a fun weekend!

Took advantage of unusually warm weather & went for a one-night bp trip with our kids. Kind of Winter Wonderland without the snow & cold - we hiked up a frozen creek bed & got to see places we usually can't get to in warmer weather.

I spent the weekend being as still as possible. One of our famous Memphis drivers ran a red light Friday at lunch and t-boned me in my company car. Two cracked ribs and multiple bruises. Fortunately nothing more than that, but it will keep me from hiking for a couple of weeks.

Went skiing with my girls on Saturday. A bit windy but not too bad.

Sunday was loads of fun. 6 loads of laundry fun that is. Then dusted, vacuumed, waterd the plants, changed the sheets on the bed, scrubbed the kitchen floor, including mucking out behind the fridge. Hauled in firewood and started a fire, gave the dog it's medicine, ironed for an hour or so, then had some guys over to watch football and play nine-ball.

Now it's snowing, the wife is supposed to fly in at noon today, if the plane can land. No instrument landing here in Cody, only visibility landing. If you can't see the runway, you can't lane. And, with the mountains around Cody, you don't want to come down too far if you can't see. She's been gone for 10 days.

Chili36,
We were looking for you Friday night, now we know why you didn't show. Hope you will be ok. You should have blown off that biz meeting on Thurs. and stayed in the Arkansas hills, we had a great time and even had a bacpac sighting.

Stalker, you don't know how much I wish I had stayed in the Ozarks. I was on my way home to pack (had to dry out my gear) when I got slammed. I will definately make the next ECT event in that area.

The OHT from Fairview to Big Piney was a great hike. For those who haven't done this section, it is a great hike. I plan on doing it again in the spring or early summer.

Like Stanlee, I've been blindsided by too-warm temps and so I decided to respect my New Year's resolution - to spoil myself. A few of us teachers went to dinner at my local (my village pub). I live in a strange (but nice) part of the world. The county (Haut St-Laurent) is about 60% French and 40% English - almost all of Scottish descent. The French are concentrated in the St. Lawrence vally, while my part of the world inland, on the last northern ecarpment of the Adirondacks (in southwestern Quebec) holds the English.

My hamlet is called Rockburn (rocky brook in Scots) and boasts an old stone Presbyterian (of course) church, a community centre (you know - strawberry socials for the church, turkey dinners for the volunteer firemen, etc.) and a beautiful English style pub that has REAL beer on tap as well as zoider (this is apple and maple syrup country).

This is quite exotic to my French-speaking colleagues and has become a favourite visiting place - the pub, that it.

Anyway, after ten years of misery, I am finally living on my own salary, everything except the house is paid off, the kids are fine and I can afford to go out when I feel like it, without having to postpone a bill payment. I had my ususal 'snake nd pigmy' (steak and kidney pudding) and Newcastle, which they've begun to drink too.

Saturday I went window shopping in Lake Placid and rented a room at the Hotel Saranac and had dinner there too. I drove back home on Sunday and went over to a buddy's place to drink #&%!$colada's and eat wild duck with buckets of red wine.

I don't have any classes this afternoon and am going over to my dealer's to test drive a Jeep TJ. BUT I STILL WANT TO GET OUT ON MY ALPINE TOURING SKIS AND GET SOME SERIOUS PEAKS BAGGED IN THE ,DACKS (I fell better now). I'm hoping to do something interesting in the White Mountains during spring break. That's about it.

Went car camping at Blakely SP in So. Alabama with scouts--beautiful place. This is one of the best spots for semi-primative car camping I know of --no bathrooms or hookups, so no people.

Great dayhiking, with old civil war battlefield and interesting topography (for the deep south).

Kids in the woods always brings "Lord of the Flys" to mind. We teter on the edge of anarchy.

MDS, it is just north of Spanish Fort

MDS Hiker,

That's the funny thing about Blakely; it is not promoted much. It says it is a state park--brown sign and everything, but they seem to operate on a shoestring budget and outside of the regular SP loop.

Anyway, it is easy to find. It is about 3 miles north of Spanish Fort, Alabama on Hwy. 225. Here's a link with a map:

It sure would be nice if we got a day off for the president's birthday, like they do for the Queen of England. Of course, then we would have a lot of people voting for a candidate born on July 3 or December 26, just for the long weekends.
