Donations NeededView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 9 of 9 messages posted.
“I have taken on the task of starting an outdoor adventure program for some YMCAs in western Kentucky. As it is a nonprofit organization, funds are pretty low...and gear, as you know, is pretty high. Just wondering if anyone would be willing to part with some old backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, and rock climbing gear to help me get the program started. Drop me a note for more information. Advice and comments always welcome!” 5:30:29 PM 12/17/01 “carabiner, email laqtis. He has a whole " kit" to donate...” 5:43:29 PM 12/17/01 “Yep, I have put together a full set up. I have contacted my local Boy Scouts today to see if they would like it. It's yours if they don't need it.” 6:57:55 PM 12/17/01 “I stopped in to see you at work today, talked to Mark. I'm sure I can come up with a few things.” 6:59:23 PM 12/17/01 “bpbaby - that would be great! Is going to be a lot of work, but is worth it. Every donation will help! Nope, wasn't working today. But, will be tues and wed...stop by and say hi! :)” 9:36:44 PM 12/17/01 for a good cause “if most of you are like me there is a whole pile of old gear not being used..just lying there. not finding too many donations around here. let me know if you can help.” 8:19:18 AM 12/20/01 “Have you looked into getting grants to buy gear?” 8:27:05 AM 12/20/01 “grants are just as hard to get, am looking at a few, but not enough to fund an entire outdoor program. if you know of any grant opps let me know. would appreciate it.” 8:14:02 PM 12/20/01 “Forgive me if this is all old hat to you. I did a little looking but I only found state specific grants. Just keep in mind that it's not just the government that gives grants, private foundations and corporations do too. REI used to do grants but I think they just changed their policy somewhat. Just be prepared to sell yourself and have printed (not professionally, remember you are SUPPOSED to be poor ;) )material that clearly explains your goals and the methods you intend to use. You could contact some gear manufacturers or outdoor product retailers and ask about them becoming a corporate sponsor. I have done this a few times as a scoutmaster and have alway been granted some form of support. For example the owning family of Winn-Dixie supermarkets are strong supporters of youth and charitable organizations. Our troop was planning a week long canoe trip and I spoke to the Manager of our local store and asked if he could help us out. We had to buy the meat but got most of the food for free. It may not be a tent but it sure helps. You could also call places or manufacturers that might have discontinued or blemished gear. If they can't sell the stuff they take a loss. If they donate it they write it off, they get a potential future customer AND they get great press. Be sure you get yourself in the local newspaper and media if possible and talk up anybody that gives you anything and make sure your benefactors know it.” 7:36:54 AM 12/21/01
