A few years ago Sports Afield changed their format to a kind of all inclusive format and covered MT, hiking, adventuring, ect. It was almost as good as Outside. The photos weren’t as god but it wasn’t aimed at yuppies. Then they sold the damn company and it back to 3 bass issues, 3 deer issues, 3 turkey issues, and 3 BS issues. Sadly it would seem that Backpacker Mag is the best. Sad isn’t it? NGA is good for general adventure.

Since I've been getting Backpacker there has been "Rocky Mountain" and "Outdoor Explorer" which looked promising, came and went. Outside and National Geographic Adventure wore me out with ads.

Backpacker will always give us plenty to grouse about, but there's nothing even close for newbie information and gear reviews.

Mags that didn't make it...

Hooked on the Outdoors - Oh, let's see, an issue every 4 or 5 months. Nice.

Blue - If the French made an outdoors magazine, this would be it. Lots of Prada ads and glamourous pictures. Few actual articles.

But, really, does anyone really read these things to gain any actual knowledge? Most stuff I need to know I find out about from phone calls and websites.

I'm in at for the articles, tales and photos...... not necessarily practical info. I like to dig into long articles that might hold your attention for 20 to 30 minutes. That's why I named Outside and NGAdventure.

Lizs as far back as I can 'member, you've been a lover of Outside. I just might hafta finally give it a try. I'll try NGA too, finally. Can you get NGA at any bookstore? I've not really noticed any in the mag racks. I've always been a BP'er Mag fan, and seeing as my subscription (perscription) don't end til Feb '04, looks like it'll be my mag of choice for a purdy good while.

I have a sub to Backpacker.
Good eye candy and I dig trip reports.

Gear reviews? Pbbth! Its like car reviews, too much "best in class" type statements without defining what class.

Nekkid!! How ya doing? Liking your new home??

I like those magazines cuz they introduce you to new things you might have have heard or read about otherwise. Or go "in-depth" on current issues.

Like I remember the first issue of NGA had some story on a semi supply driver who had to get goods to an outpost in the boonies of Australia's rainforest. He had to get in and out by a certain time, or the monsoon rains would come. His semi had all kinds of jungle adaptations on it.

A later issue went in search of the long lost Everett Reuss in southern Utah (that concept I knew a little about and was hugely interested in!) This past year they interviewed the former leader of the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan -- long before the current conflict -- on the continuing battle there. And now there's a war there, we're in it, and that former leader (who might have been made the leader of Afghanistan) was killed in a suicide journalist interview.

In Outside, let's see, I recall reading about some crazy festival in Ireland or Scotland (somewhere like that, but I might be wrong) where guys just get together and fight on the streets. A real recent issue has a story on Ted and Beau Turner and their huge land holdings in the U.S. -- looking at their brand of conservation on working ranches. I knew they had a lot of land and it's pretty interesting to read what they're doing.

Anyway, I like to learn and be challenged. Outside and NGA do that. And they figure you know how to read and appreciate good literature.

(Man, I should be getting paid!!! lol) As far as where to find them, try Barnes and Noble. But heck, they're on the magazine rack at my local smalltown supermarket too. You could ask you local store about having them put on the rack to see if they'd sell. I keep thinking I need to do that with MY local store, becuase they don't carry writing and/or photography mags like another area grocery store in a similar-sized town does. I would guess they'd try it, see if they sell, and they respond accordingly to either keep them on the shelf or to not stock them.

Maybe I’m just left brained (no brained?) but when I read the articles in Backpacker Mag, they are all like, “As we came around the bend in the trail the overlook was so beautiful it brought to mind my son and the first trip we took together…BLAH BLAH BLAH!” Who cares Skippy! I wanna know what ya brought to eat, what ya cooked it on, how it worked for ya? What gear sucked on the trip? How was trail traffic? Save that other BS for your therapist, OK?

Lizs, I need to know more people like you. When my kids grow up I plan to learn to read. By then maybe I can afford to buy some of the stuff advertized in NGA & Outside instead of just being annoyed.

My fondest memory of an Outside article was a guy saying all his condescending environmentallist friends could go wipe their butts with rocks.

I get Outside (It's gotten thinner since advertizers have started to dry up for all mags.) It's okay. Too much advertisement of product in the form of articles.

I enjoy reading Appalachian Trailway News. It is a good little mag about the areas I frequent the most and the issues that directly effect those areas. (www.appalachiantrail.org)

NGA is the only outdoor mag I have subscription to. I will buy others if I have a long wait somewhere and don't have anything to read. The last NGA had a cool article about the psychology of being lost, and some advice on how to not get lost and how to stay alive if you do.

Did anybody read that article in Outside a couple of years ago where a guy groomed his own ice rink in the back pond, or the article about the guy who died jumping off cliffs in Yosemite, or what about the one on Alex Lowe before he died? Cool stuff.

Recently discovered a British mag called AT - Adventure Travel. It's chock full of trip reports from around the globe. Neat to get a European perspective. Drawbacks are that it is expensive at $6 at Barnes & Noble and it looks like they only have 6 issues a year.

A mag. from NG. Has lots of trekking info. Last month it had a good article on survival, and why people get lost. One yr subscription is $10 ... I think.

I love all of them outside,Nationl Geographic, backpacker, Canoe and kayaker, and moutain biking action. The only thing that really gets to me is that no one can get along. Hiker don't like moutain bikers and the all don't like four wheelers. Who cares how you get out as long as you get out and enjoy everything that the outdoors has to offer.
kodiakman

kodiak, hikers, mtn bikers,horsepackers,4 wheelers cant get along cause WE all ruin each others experiences.

No hiker wants to dodge mtn.bikers while stepping in steamy piles of horse cr@p or being lulled to sleep by the roar of a jeep.

Horsepackers are so wealthy that they think they own the trail and no one deserves it (T.I.C.)

Mtn Bikers are mid-twenties men with a foolish death wish, Mtn bikers usually treat hikers as mere obstacles. They (mtn bikers) ought to just enlist in the marines...

4 wheelers are the least and most harmful all at once. They are drunk which means they arent trying to hit you when they do. Far too often the accident occurs when the moonshine is spilt in their lap. However if they do see you, watch out...you cant run 45mph.

Everyone likes kayakers except for speedboaters who are plan nuts and trout fishers hate them cause trout fishers hate everyone, a prerequisit of owning your first fly rod and set of mepps flies.

Hikers are the worst scum. Yuppie elitists that think they are the only ones that should be allowed in the outdoors.

Is it any wonder that around here there is a 12 month season with no bag limits on backpackers?

Birch I do know what you are talking about. I do it all. I'm not good at one thing but i enjoy it all. I don't want to sound rude but, it closed minded people that make it hard for everyone to get along. If you respect everyone it will go smooth. No one should be better then the other. To each is his own. Find what you like and respect all others.

Fritz, I especially liked the part where they write about the guy that was found in the desert after a week in 101F temperatures. They asked him how he survived. He said he was in the middle of divorce proceedings and didn't want to give everything to the b!tch. heee hee
