OLN
At least there is a network devoted to the outdoors. the only other choice is The Outdoor Channel, and that is devoted to Hunting. OLN is a diverse set of programming and is more devoted to the enthusiast vs the killing of wildlife. Sunday's are where the best programming for hiking and camping will be found. If you don't like fishing, don't watch the channel...or learn to use your VCR and record what you want.

There is plenty of killing of wildlife on OLN. The Outdoor "Life" Network would better called the Outdoor DEATH Network.

So what...
I could care less if they show hunting programs on the OLN. Most logical people realize the hunting in necessary to the perservation of wildlife. Not only in the regulation of populations; but the intake of revenue for conservation programs. All the people who complain about hunting always seem to be city-folks who are living on acres upon acres of land that can no longer accomodate wildlife. Do you honestly think that the wildlife knows to slow down thier breeding practices to accommodate the growth of cities. Perhaps we should just stop all hunting so they(deer, elk, bear, cougar) can die of starvation and disease???
Besides we all know that what really bothers these environmentalists is that there are white guys with guns; who happen to be capitalists as well.
Unless your a vegan; I dont want to hear your bellyaching about hunting. I make peace with the animals I eat. Do you do the same when reaching for your prepackaged steak at the local market? Oh...and just for the record I'd like to inform you all that the enviromental movement is more about embracing the socialist political agenda then protecting the earth. Oh no! Your secret is out!!!

"All the people who complain about hunting always seem to be city-folks who are living on acres upon acres of land that can no longer accomodate wildlife."

Really? Is this just a personal assumption or do you have facts to back it up?

I don't have stats but I know those opposed to hunting constitute the minority of the population.

"the enviromental movement is more about embracing the socialist political agenda"

I smell a troll.

oh....she did not like that....
Sure...everytime I go to my classes(in the city) I see the political climate change. There are anti-hunting advocates outside of the city, but can you honestly deny that the heart of the environmental movement is in the cities. In Portland Or. they crowd the square, blow whistle, bang gongs, and shout down anyone who dares to oppose thier infallible views. So maybe I'm stereotyping them...How did I get that stereotype though??? I'm an observant person, I know what I see and hear on a daily basis; besides, no need to be angry, admit your views and be proud of them. As far as the troll comment....try and debate without getting personel, it will help your arguement in the end...

Well, when you go to the city you're probably also in the midst of millions of voices versus the rural setting that I assume you're coming from. Consequently, any group opinion is likely to be more pronounced. However, I would say you're probably right that the heart of any movement is in the city. That's where the people are, that's where the bucks are, that's where the votes are. But I wouldn't say that Portland is a city indicative of the rest of the country's political stance. Oregon is renowned for its extremism on both sides of fence.

"As far as the troll comment....try and debate without getting personel, it will help your arguement in the end..."

You should practice what you preach.

Rosey......really?
When exactly did I get personal with you rosey.(oh...she didn't like that?) I'm sorry if my dissagreement was taken personally. I'm aware that I'm not seeing all the opinions, but I'm definetely seeing the vocal minority that the Portland politicians are catering to. The size of the movement is irrelevent to me. When it starts getting laws passed that effect my life; then I must speak out. As for you and I....There is no you and I...If you want to bate me into a personal confrontation just start a new thread; I wouldn't want to waste everyones time with our differences that are not related to this thread. This is probably my fault anyway...

Concerning hunting. I think there are such strong opinions on both sides that it is futile to try to convince someone otherwise (much like the abortion issue).

That won't keep me from sharing my opinion. I tend to approach the outdoors as a world where life can be observed and nature's rejuvenating beauty can be experienced. The hunters I know approach the outdoors as a battlefield for a game of destruction.
Big Coop

Whoa.....how do you know that Big Coop?
Well that is a well thought out and measured response Coop. I've been on a battlefield, and suffice to say the outdoors is nothing close. I spend 2 weeks a year hunting. I spend an average of 30 days a year backpacking. I love nature; but I also understand that I'm part of it.(foodchain) Sure some hunters are out there to satisfy a blood lust perhaps, but to say that about all hunters just weakens your point of view. I respect all opinions, but yours just serves to alienate those who do not agree with you. Does hunting make me an evil person? Does the fact that you do not hunt help firlmy plant your flag on the moral high-ground of this debate? I wish I could write with such moral certainty, but I'm a humble man who understands that none of us truly know it all.

Whiskey - I was specifically trying to avoid casting aspersions on all hunters when I referred only the the hunters that I knew. The hunters that I am acquainted with do not treat nature with a great deal of respect.

I also tried to avoid an argument by stating in my first comment that it is not worthwhile to argue points when two sides won't budge.

Thus a mean thread.

Most Hunters
Most hunters, in my observation, are also city dwellers. Some of them are proficient at what they do, and many are boisterous, drunk, and obnoxious trophy hunters. They swarm out of the cities, hire guides to do most of the hunting for them, and complain loudly when they miss.
But, hey, at least they are at the top of the food chain.
Was I mean enough, Rad?

wow!!!
start a simple conversation regarding sunday nite television, and it turns into "as the stomach turns". Does anyone out there just hike and camp for the serenity and enjoyment anymore, or does it always have to be a political statement that says "we're better cause we get out of the house and shed our personal posessions for a short time"? Sometimes it is really nice to just do something without any opinions.
