stikmon, I am in Memphis. Have you considered the Ozark Mountian hike in Janurary? I will not be able to make this one, but there are a number of TT'ers who are planning the trip. I will making trips to the Mountain Home, AR area in the spring. Haven't bp'ed in MO, but would be interested in a weekend trip to see the area.

While it wouldn't exactly be an upland hike, the Mississippi between Memphis and Cairo is a different world in its solitude. When I was younger I worked on towboats on the Mississippi, and still remember the amazing stillness along the wide riverbanks in that area. The crows seemed to sense it too, just lazily gliding along on the winds as if time and cares had ceased to exist.

Lizs, the Mississippi along that stretch is poetry. So isolated, so open, so wide and relaxed.

I am planning on going to the ozark in late Jan, that is if I am still in the area. How things can change overnight. There is an outside chance that I will be transferring to WV in Feb, but I really want to do the Ar hike as it might be my last chance to commune with the Ozarks. Missouri has been kind to me, I hope WV is too.

Aaaaahhhh, memories, huh? I didn't get to go to Utah at all this year (waaaaaah!! didn't really go anywhere out west)....... but last October was there for TWO WEEKS on a road trip. That shot you saw was taken on the next most recent trip there, April of 99. There had been a snowstorm then. Didn't even go to Bryce. Last year got caught in some snow squalls at Bryce. Was kinda nasty. lol

I didn;t make Bryce, but I did go up to Cedar Breaks...cool, almost met my maker there...slipped and fell and was sliding to the cliff edge...would have been a 1000' fall if I hadn;t grabbed a small bush as it flashed past my face. 3 more feet and I would have been looking up to where I had been, with nothing but blue sky as a back drop. I grabbed the last plant before going over the edge...gives new meaning to the old song..."Close to the Edge". I was fortunate. then I ate my lunch.
