y do some peeps associate nature life w/suffering?
i dont hardly use silverware in traditional living i dont think id panick if i forgot my silver while in nature. the wuesstion is :'IS IT NESSACERRY?!?!?!"
I've hiked in the rain befor late at nite all nite. i feel its errotic. squishy socky footed boots & everything.
also in my persepective-milage is not a priority. milage is for cars not people. ;)
i like to take my time.
as long as that may take.

Balgair, forgive me if I'm incorrect but I thought you'd never backpacked before? Once you do you'll perhaps understand the luxury of the spoon. Your hands get pretty filthy somedays and it's nice to have a utensil to use instead of a finger. I have watched Nigal eat couscous with his finger and it's much nicer when he has his toothbrush handle! I seriously doubt that anyone here would panic if they'd forgotten their spoon. Maybe groan abit but no panic.

Many people share your view on mileage. Just remember that some places have designated camping and you have to hike a certain distance to reach the next site or the next water source, etc. So don't think that you'll just be moseying along on your 'round the world trip. You'll be hustling to the next water I bet.

The romance of not using a spoon fades a bit the first time you wipe yer a@@.

Couse-couse finger food is an art and ya have to get the couse-couse just right so it's sticky enough. 8)

Just for biz:
If I forgot my spoon, I'd get out my knife, find a bit of wood, and carve myself a new one, maybe even notch the tip to make it a spork. Actually, it would be far easier to find two small sticks of the right size, debark and smooth them to create chopsticks.

Good idears, Pekka. I like the ease of the chopstick method and have thot about carrying some of those disposable ones. I think I read Nigal has before...

bamboo skewers work nicely (and you always have a clean marshmallow stick (lash it on to a longer one.))

So would I had I remembered to bring the KNIFE! What an a@@bag I was! Chopsticks are great! I've made some out of saplings before and used them.

'Gotta have blade though-' Try telling that to biz, LOL.

Nothing teaches you the wonders of chopsticks faster than finding yourself plopped down among 1.2 billion folks who consider them the only untensil to set before you at dinner time.

Thread degrades to chopsticks...
I was eating some mongolian beef the othr day and thinking that chopsticks would be cool to have instead of a spoon on the trail, but then how would I eat pudding?

You hold them together and scoop.

When I was 8 we went to Toronto and ate at a restaurant in their China Town. Not a fork or spoon in the place! It was great! I've known how to use them ever since.

Isn't the Chinatown in Toronto the absolute best? Way better than the one in San Francisco, IMHO.

The Chopstick Chronicles
Sass, at first we struggled trying to pick up slippery jao-zi (steamed dumplings) with chop sticks, until we noticed that the Chinese often just stabbed them with their sticks. Maybe wasn't the best etiquette, but most Chinese are pretty pragmatic. So scooping up pudding is right on target -- though we made some chocolate pudding for Chinese friends and they were pretty disgusted by the goop, barely tasting it.

After constant practice, I got to where I could pick up single peas and beans with my kwai-dza (chopsticks) without dropping them before reaching my mouth. If your waiter speaks Mandarin, try out "Wo yao kwai-dza" (I want chopsticks).

I've noticed the common practice of those who are fluent in there use will hold a bowl of rice right up to their bottom lip and just kind of shovel it in. I'm down with shoveling. 8)

Skully, never been to San Fran (yet). Toronto's China town was absolutely fasinating for me as a kid! I remember being entranced by the pictures of octopus and other creatures I never knew anyone ate. We entertained the staff and other patrons there trying to order in English and eat with chop sticks. I'll never forget it! :o)

Like balgair79, I am a dreamer and an idealist but honey, I am also a practical backpacker. It's great to be in tune with your inner self... As long as your inner self is in tune with reality!

we create reality
each ones being different than the other
thats y peeps have so much to talk about
'whats going on in yr reality-how does it differ from mine how is it the same'
some try to push thier reality off on others
claiming others try to push off reality
some refusing to recognize others reality say'here take mine'
i give u A REALITY"
hehehehehe
whateva. keep yr reality to yrself-i dont mind hearing about it once in while..but yet reality is like a toothbrush -dont trust it AND its very ppersonal & very individual. ;)
