“I give it an A as a flick. It was not the Trilogy, really, but it was a good film. I, too, pictured Legolas much like he is in the film. Almost all of the characters were acceptable to me.

“Yup! Saw it last night (and I plan on seeing it at least once more, maybe twice). The scale was mindboggling. The Great Hall in Moria was even Larger than I imagined it. I think the second film should be FOUR hours or FIVE, LOL

“Ok, after watching FOTR last weekend I made the mistake of telling the boys about it on the ride home (they had chosen to go to a make-out movie with their girlfriends instead). It instigated an ongoing argument about the importance of the Tom Bombadill incidence and it's relevance to the rest of the trilogy. So settle this one for me-an-Sauron.

Was it a crucial plot element that they should have left in? Or was it an interesting tangent that they can effectively allude to later on with flashbacks without detracting from the story?”

“I really enjoyed the movie. I went to see it with someone who had never read the Hobbit (yes, it surprised me to know there was anyone on the planet who had not read it). The Hobbit was (IMO) essential to having a better understanding of the movie during the first few minutes.”

“While I loved the imagery and special effects of the movie I felt that they should have incorporated more of the songs and verses that were in the book. I felt that they were left out in order to put more emphasis on the action sequences. In the books, the singing (especially while traveling) and poetry are a constant and important theme that should not have been minimized to that degree. The movie also lacked some of the smooth rhythm that the book has, alternating between peaceful and reflective times and scary, violent ones. As in life, simple pleasures such as food and friendship become more precious and significant after one has lived through unpleasant situations.”

“I thought it was 30 minutes to long and blurry and choppy at times during some of the computer generated stuff. Out of 10 I give it a 8.5. Can't wait for the next one either.”

“I saw it a second time yesterday, and loved it even more--I had gotten most of the little quibbles (what did they change? and all that) out of the way the first time.

I can't imagine anyone else playing Gandalf. Once again, Ian McKellen was brilliant. (btw, for another incredible performance that is completely different, check out Richard III.) The rest of the cast was excellent, especially Sean Bean, Viggo Mortenson, Elijah Wood, and (surprisingly) Sean Astin.

Most importantly, though, they made Middle Earth real and convincing.

I didn't mind the excision of Tom Bombadil. I never liked him all that much anyway, and he's really a digression from the main plot.
