I have not heard of any places you can backpack and camp among the Giant Sequoias in California. Any of you hear of any trails or crosscountry routes that would put one in solitude amongst the big trees?

I took a hike once from in the big trees near the ocean. It was just a day hike. The trees were breathtaking. One thing I noticed was the lack of wildlife bigger than a banana slug. Not even birds. I could have been just the time of year or that we couldn’t see them because of dense cover. Our route took us to a beautiful isolated beach. To bad it was to cold to use the beach as isolated beaches are intended to be used. The beach had some areas that looked like they would be good camp sites to, above high water line.

That was the Redwoods.
Cousins of the Giant Sequoia.

The wildlife you saw was about right. Dense cover and shade. The larger mammals prefer openings and less dense forest -- more to eat.

Sequoias
Check out Redwood Mdw. out of Mineral King via Timber Gap, on the way to Bearpaw Mdw. You can sleep under the Sequoias there.
Or look for Redwood Saddle trailhead between Grant Grove and Lodgepole. It's a figure 8 trail going through Sequoia groves, but you have to camp elsewhere. There are also some caves in the area.
Hope this helps.

You may fight some people, but another option closer to you (Fresno) is to reserve the Environmental campground at Calaveras Big Trees park, do the day-hike routine from there. Not a true "wilderness" BP experience, but not much is in the big trees that I've found...

We have access to lots of backcountry Sequoia Groves.
Break out the topos most of them are listed right on the maps.

South Fork Grove
Castle Creek Grove
Eden Creek Grove
Homer's Nose Grove
etc.,etc.

I agree with The-Naviguesser Redwood Meadow Grove would be a great trip with lots of options.
It was in a past isuue of Backpacker Mag. don't remember which one.
