The Soviet Union is no more. Some people think, "what do we need intelligence for?" My answer to that is we have plenty of enemies. Plenty of enemies abound. Unpredictable leaders willing to export instability or to commit crimes against humanity. Proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, terrorism, narco-trafficking, people killing each other, fundamentalists killing each other in the name of God. These and more. Many more. As our analysts know, as our collectors of intelligence know - these are our enemies. To combat them we need more intelligence, not less. We need more human intelligence. That means we need more protection for the methods we use to gather intelligence and more protection for our sources, particularly our human sources, people that are risking their lives for their country. (Applause)

Even though I'm a tranquil guy now at this stage of my life, I have nothing but contempt and anger for those who betray the trust by exposing the name of our sources. They are, in my view, the most insidious, of traitors.

LOL - If what Rove did was legit and on the up and up, how come he hid for so long? - How come he let the reporters be hassled and threatened with arrest for not revealing his name? How come he let White House Spokesman suggest it was ridiculous to suggest that he might have done something that led to the outting of the CIA agent? How come he insisted on speaking in double secret background and said the White House should not be linked in any way with the story???

It remains to be seen if Rove was Novak's source. It remains to be seen if Rove knew Plame was under cover. It also remains to be see how Rove knew she was an agent. Right now, all we know is that he was playing hardball and being sneaky - that doesn't yet put his actions beyond the pale.

Unless Robert Novack is psychic, which he had proven not to be over the years, somebody outed Valerie Plame, and that somebody would have to be in the administration, unless, of course, some liberal with no access to the information did it.

Ohio's republican't gov., Taft, has a 76% disapproval rating. The prewiew for 06' is going to be a classic, Ken Blackwell (R) v. Ted Strickland (D)

Blackwell is African-American and christian conservative, Strickland is a congressman/preacher/NRA member/HUGE friend of Labor. Does anybody actually believe that all the rednecks that normally vote republican will vote for a black guy? That'll be the day.

I guess SS must be talking about Matt Cooper's piece in Time that came out over the weekend or his Russert appearance.

Rove may not be indicted.

The fact remains that the White House denied the allegations that Rove and Libby were involved a couple of years ago. Cooper has testified that Rove told him about Plame and Libby confirmed it. Rove and Libby were involved and the White House has been lying for two years.

That sort of thing used to get Konservatives all worked up. What’s changed?

Republican Party Chairman Ken Mehlman told CNN's "Late Edition" that Rove -- long considered one of the most aggressive strategists in American politics -- is the victim of an "unprecedented" partisan smear campaign by Democrats.

"They're trying to have short-term political gain and smear a good man," Mehlman said. "And it's wrong, and they should apologize for it."

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Eleven former intelligence officers say the leak of CIA officer Valerie Plame's identity may have damaged national security and the government's ability to gather intelligence.

The former officers made their views known in a three-page statement to congressional leaders.

They said the Republican National Committee has circulated suggestions for officials to deal with the Plame case by focusing on the idea that Plame was not working undercover and legally merited no protection.

Not moral messages

As a teacher for the Diocese of Pittsburgh for 14 years, one important lesson I learned was that no matter what I said to the child, whatever the parents said superseded my message. What parents say and how they live sends a message stronger than any teacher's voice no matter what the issue.

Sen. Rick Santorum and his wife have taught their children a powerful lesson on civic responsibility by refusing to pay any tuition money to the Penn Hills School District for their children who attended the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School (Penn Hills Loses Bid to Charge Santorum, July 12). Released from that payment on a technicality shows that even an upstanding, moral gentleman like Sen. Santorum teaches his children the following lessons:

1) Take advantage of the system whenever you can.

2) The little guy pays while the rich and powerful guy gets away with it.

3) As a Catholic, you have no obligation to pay your share to the common good in spite of Catholic social doctrine.

Finally, I am shocked that our religious leaders who see Sen. Santorum as some sort of faith-and-morals hero have not spoken up on this issue at all.

He strongly responded to some Republican allegations that minimized Plame's role in the CIA. "We must put to bed the lie that she was not undercover," he said.

"Instead of a president concerned first and foremost with protecting this country and the intelligence officers who serve it, we are confronted with a president who is willing to sit by while political operatives savage the reputations of good Americans like Valerie and Joe Wilson."

"We deserve people who work in the White House who are committed to protecting classified information, telling the truth to the American people and living by example the idea that a country at war with Islamic extremists cannot focus its efforts on attacking other American citizens who simply tried to tell the truth," Johnson added.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/07/23/dems.radio/index.html

In reference to the investigation, Bush told reporters last week that "If someone committed a crime, they will no longer work in my administration."

That statement shifted from his previous comment on his response to the reported leak. When asked in June 2004 whether he stood by his promise to fire whoever was found to have leaked Plame's name, Bush replied, "Yes."

Congressman admits affair, denies abuse

A Maryland woman is suing U.S. Rep. Don Sherwood of northeastern Pa., saying he assaulted her several times. He called the allegations "baseless."

By Kimberly Hefling

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Don Sherwood admitted in court papers filed Thursday that he had a five-year affair with a Maryland woman, but he denied abusing her, as she claimed in a $5.5 million civil suit.

The court papers were filed by Sherwood, a Republican from northeastern Pennsylvania, in response to the lawsuit filed last month by Cynthia Ore, 29, of Rockville, Md. In it, she alleges that he brutally assaulted her and struck her on several occasions.

Sherwood, 64, denied in Thursday's filing that Ore lived at his Capitol Hill apartment as she claimed in her suit. He said the affair ended Sept. 15 - the day police were called to Sherwood's apartment after Ore dialed 911.

In a statement released Thursday, he apologized for the affair, but he denied hurting Ore.

"I will defend myself to the fullest extent possible against these malicious and baseless allegations," Sherwood said.

Sherwood, a married millionaire from Tunkhannock, is a four-term congressman, with three daughters.

He is petitioning to have the case moved out of Superior Court in Washington, where Ore filed her suit, and placed in federal court.

Ore has said the two met at a Young Republicans event and began a relationship in 1999. But in Thursday's court filing Sherwood said he could not remember where they met.

In her suit, Ore says she remained in the relationship despite the alleged assaults because Sherwood had promised to marry her and start a family. Sherwood denies that.

According to the Sept. 15 police report, Ore called 911 on her cell phone from the bathroom and reported that Sherwood had "choked her for no apparent reason." Both parties said he was giving her a back rub, but he said she "jumped up" and ran to the bathroom.

The police report said Ore had no physical evidence of injury but "did not seem to be of sound mind." It added that "both parties have left out significant information or are not willing to discuss in detail what actually happened."

Shortly after the incident became public in May, Sherwood issued an apology for "the pain and embarrassment" he had caused his family and supporters.

The corrupt republican of the day is..........
Taft's former top aide pleads to ethics violation
7/29/2005, 7:02 p.m. ET
The Associated Press

(AP) — Excerpts from comments Friday by Brian Hicks, former chief of staff to Gov. Bob Taft, on his decision to plead no contest to a charge of violating the state's ethics laws. The charges involve stays in 2002 and 2003 at the Florida home of GOP contributor and rare coin dealer Tom Noe and his wife, Bernadette.

"Nearly every aspect of my life and my business has been reviewed, been the subject of a fishing expedition on every rumor and every innuendo put forth by politic opponents, put forward by business competitors, for people seeking to shield the spotlight from themselves. Indeed, I may now be the most scrutinized former public official in Ohio."

"It is no secret as I said before that my family and the Noe family have been friends for many, many years. I am saddened that that the Tom Noe I read about in the papers today is not the Tom Noe I have known for a long time."

"The property we stayed at was not a rental property and therefore no rental rates existed. Nor was it a $2 million seaside estate as has been reported repeatedly in the newspapers. For six of the nine nights that we stayed on the property, our accommodations were in an efficiency apartment consisting of two bedrooms and a kitchenette. And for most of this time both Tom and Bernadette and other members of their family were at their property using the main house. So comparisons to the full rental of a house are simply inaccurate."

"Nonetheless, I insisted, let me repeat, I insisted, on paying for the use of the property. Because I wanted to avoid even the appearance of impropriety."

"I believed then and I believe now that I paid a fair rate for these accommodations we used and that no disclosure was necessary on my part."

"I regret that there are now concerns that I paid too little. So today, I've taken action to put this matter behind me once and for all."

Dear Senator DeWine,

I am writing you today to voice my disappointment in your failure to speak out for your constituents and oppose the disengagement plan in Gaza that is being carried out by the Israeli government with the support of the U.S. government. The displacement of any race, class or religion is not right under any circumstances and especially when that land is being given to terrorists. This plan will only lead to more terrorism and bloodshed. Further I as an American recent the use of my tax dollars to fund such a plan and to fund the forming of a Palestinian terrorist state.

You as well as President Bush have failed miserably in staying consistent on the fight against terror. We hear such catch phrases as “We will not negotiate with people who blow up busses and trains.”, when it is a British train. But nothing is said when it’s an Israeli bus or train. Israel is expected to appease the terrorists. Not only does your failure effect our ally Israel but it stands as a testament to the effectiveness of terrorism. You have let the terrorists win sir through your inaction and silence. Do not think that Al Qaeda terrorists all over the globe have not been emboldened by your failure and their victory.

I am a proud conservative republican. In light of your failure I can not, nor will I, vote for you in the coming elections. Further, you have mobilized me to campaign for your opponent, even if it means a democrat wining your seat.

I pray to the Almighty that you one day find the ability to blush again.

Respectfully,

Craig Turner

Respectfully, well written… but all that letter will do is convince them that they wouldn't have won the authors vote no matter what they did. One has to make them think you are at the center, were thinking of voting for them, and now you have had to make the sad choice to do something else with your vote. They respond to people in the center, not those that are hard-core supporters or opponents. They spend a lot of money to fool the people at the center into voting for them and that’s what they don’t want to waste... it's all about the money.

the letter is well-written, although i disagree.

99.4% of the population in gaza are palestinian.

.5% of the population are israeli settlers; yet they control over 30% of all land in gaza.

you criticize the displacement of the israelis; however, it were the palestinians who were forced to move to gaza and displaced from israel after the 1948 arab-israeli war.

the israeli settlements did not begin construction until the 1970s. i find it odd that .5% of the population controls 30% of the territory, in one of the most densely populated places on earth. i do not know how these settlements were constructed. were the palestinians paid for the land? or was it taken from them? maybe i'm wrong, but israel decided to build settlements on land that was never a recognized part of their country. could the US erect settlement outposts outside its borders?

i abhor the terrorism some palestinian groups have adopted, but the vast majority of the palestinians are not terrorists. both sides have contributed to this difficult situation.

but considering the fact that palestinian birthrates far outpace israeli birthrates and israel has no intention to incorporate the territories into its nation and give palestinians citizenship, i agree with sharon's decision. since no one wants the palestinians, the only option is that they form their own peaceful, democratic government- which is possible with a lot of work.

it is sad to see this displacement, at the very least they are being compensated. but there are many issues involved and not everything is black and white. israel is right most of the time, but not all the time.

“since no one wants the palestinians, the only option is that they form their own peaceful, democratic government- which is possible with a lot of work.”

Peaceful? If you believe the Palis are going to stop the killing you’re kidding yourself. The new official Palastinian motto already is…

How many of you said "well written", yet the letter is actually very poorly written? I'm not trying to nitpick, but this letter is rife with grammatical and spelling errors. I realize you guys liked the content of the letter, but please reserve the phrase "well written" for something that is in fact well written. This letter was horribly written. This was going to a U.S. Senator. I think spell check and grammar check would have been appropriate if the author is not gifted in the art of writing.

pedxing - Not to beat a dead horse, but a cursory glance reveals "recent" and "wining" as misspellings, plus the word you mentioned and "republican" should be capitalized, unless the author truly meant he supports republics and was not referencing the party. Of course, "democrat" should have been capitalized. Also, there are too numerous punctuation (comma) errors to list. A few sentences could have been worded better also, although technically they may be correct. I am not saying I am perfect in spelling and grammar and normally wouldn't think twice about it, but this is a letter to a U.S. Senator and several people said it was "well written".

Hopefully Nigal edited Craig Turner's letter before he sent it.

Generally, I do find Nigal to be quite eloquent - but often containing errors which detract from the elegance. Of course, I often miss errors in my own writing, because I know what I was thinking when I wrote and tend to see what I intended - even if I made mistakes in putting it in writing.
