Let's see, I don't like smoke, but hey, I'll still go into a bar and tank up on the alcohol. Hmmmm. Seems like a matter of picking your poison. What the hell, if you don't like going into smokey bars, then don't. Pick some artsy fartsy non-smoking joint and rot your liver there. Just don't mandate the life style for everyone because of your choice.

Hell, I don't like fat chicks in spandex. I think we should have a law against that. Sheesh. Oh, and sparkling water, that really pisses me off, let's ban that nonsense too. Hey, where does it stop!

An innoscent bystander shouldn't have to hack up black lung puppies because of someone else's filthy addiction, period. If common courtesy can't keep smokers from contaminating their neighbors, then we need laws that will.

Yes, Don, it's an addiction. How about the tobacco industry? Can you say… DRUG PUSHERS? I think those CEOs who blatantly lied to congress should have been lead directly to jail from the hearing. Yeah… let's tee off That One, *G*.

But Please, Sunshine… Yet Another Prohibition? good grief. You would think we would've learned by now.

Absolutely, Hodgeman! Anyone playing disco music should be shot on sight, LOL

There was a fat chick in yellow spandex outside Hartsfield airport the other day. She dropped a quarter and when she bent over to pick it up the spandex split wide open. Two businessmen thought it was a cab and jumped in.

Hey… what about people with nasty attitudes 'contaminating' public discourse? There Ought To Be A Law...

ChinaChas, Tilt...

I think you distinctly weken your argument by bringing up things like fat chicks in spandex, sparkling water, and nasty attitudes.

There is no comparison whatsoever between the effects those things have on others, and the effect smoking has on others. To the extent that you try to say there is, I think you are just showing the weakness of your position.

And Chas, no one is suggesting that we mandate a lifestyle here, the only legislation we are really talking about is to ensure that those who choose to, can avoid smelling the smoke, can avoid having their clothes permeated with smoke, and can avoid having their health adversely affected by smoke.

Hey, fat chicks in spandex provide a valuable service to society. How else is the tensile strength of spandex going to be tested?

Oh and by the way...posting too early in the a.m. can "weken" my spelling, and (as I said yesterday) I don't think there should be legislation mandating smoking policy for restaurants...

Actually, I agreed with what You had said earlier, Fritz. Other than that, I have no position, no argument. It really doesn't matter to me one way or the other.

maryphyl, smokers make themselves less healthy out of their own free will, why should we all feel responsible for that?

Thank you everybody for responding! Just reading all the comments has made me more forceful in my convictions. It sounds so nice in CA, BC, Maine where they don't allow smoking in restaurants. You know, I think it was just as big of a deal when they first banned smoking in airplanes, public buildings, etc. People will get used to it and generally like it better.

By the way, I read somewhere that you are 100 times more likely to develop cancer from secondhand smoke than you are from exposure to environmental carcinogens. I just thought I'd add that.

And what about cars? An old lady and a little kid got plowed here recently because someone ran a light and another drifted off the road. Shouldn't we ban cars? They're killing people every day!

IMHO, the real issue is who's next? Business owners were told they had to begin enforcing a law against their customers who were otherwise engaged in a legal activity, and if these businesses owners did not enforce that law they would be held liable. When they come after you who's going to be left to support you and your rights? It's a vicous circle, "I've been burned of my rights so why should I help you protect yours".

Party on...while you still can!

"As a rule smokers are less healthy yet I see smokers outside in the weather"...maybe they need the fresh air.

Bpbaby, do you really have choices in everything? BTW, those comments earlier weren't directed at you...it was just for discussion...not meant to offend anybody.

My two youngest daughters have been advised:
1. Nothing good happens after midnight. So it's better to go home.
2. Nothing good comes from smoking.
3. Nothing good comes from drinking.

Still young, 18 and 23, they have tried all, have seen a lot of supporting evidence, and now, at least, neither smoke nor drink (I hope).

I now view both smoking and drinking not only as health issues, but as survival issues. (Driving a car is a survival issue, too.)

No offense taken Stanlee. You know, I really do feel that way. The alternate choice may not be right, moral, legal, or correct, but I feel there is always more than one choice in any situation. Which path to take is up to the person involved. It amazes me to watch people and their actions in any given situation. But then again, I am easily amazed!! LOL

Pepperdog's statement is about as apt an analogy as I've ever heard.

If smokers could wear goldfish bowl helmets on their heads and keep all that smoke to themselves I wouldn't have a problem. But they can't or won't so it's their problem if they have to go outside to kill themselves.

Another thing I hate to see is a smoker toss down a butt before entering a building. Why do they think that a cigarette butt isn't litter?

I used to smoke. My first husband was in the army and I got into the habit of knocking off the ember, stomping it out, and putting the butt into my pocket for later disposal. I have always wished others would do the same. I also hate to see cigarette embers/lit cigarettes go out car windows. That's a fire hazard.

well I still smoke, not that I want to but after 35 years Im not even attempting to quit any more. Just bury me with a carton . I dont leave my butts lay around I put them in my pocket to throw away latter. I dont intentionally bother anyone with them, and usually try very hard to not smoke around non smokers whenever possible.I also go outside to smoke when i can. I also will not eat in a non smoking resturaunt , and then those waittresses are just out my good tips. Thats right I said my good tips because it has been proven that smokers tip much better than non smokers. so if they dont want my money I just wont give it to them. besides, why should I hurry and turn over there tables for them fast. I like to relax after eating . so if you cant smoke in Main and Cal it is just two more states I dont need to visit. they dont get my tourism dollar either then. oh well.

And MOM......not trying to be cruel here but I doubt California or Maine will have to close up and turn off the lights because you ain't going to spend your dollars there.

Now California might have to turn the lights off if they don't pay their electricity bill to Enron but that's another story.

Madison bars say revenues dissipating with smoking ban

"The downtown bars are fun, but not anymore. The fact that they don't have smoking now, I won't go there," Ryan Eisenhut said. "Wait until it's 10 below and they try to get people out there in the parking lot (to smoke)."

I have a monthly meeting (Mandatory) that is at a smoking restaurant it is awful. I actually wear the day priors clothes so I dont get a clean set all stabky.

Restaurants should be smoke free to protect the workers. Breathing second hand smoke for 8 hours day after day is a hazard they shouldn't be subjected to.

birch - Rochester, NY passed a law to that effect. Actually, I believe the smoke area had to be "sealed off" from the non-smoke area. While restaurants were attempting to comply or consider going smoke free, NY State banned smoking.

Maine has had smoke free restaurants for several years, and smoke free bars for at least a couple years.
Moody's Diner in Waldoboro went smoke free long ago after one of their workers who never smoked died of lung cancer.

The only bad thing as a result of the no smoking thing, is that Margarita's uses their old outside dining area as the smoking area now. They pretty much enclosed it, so now if you go out there on a nice sunny day, it's like being in a smoke filled room. And every time the door is opened, smoke pours in.
