“ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (AP) -- A University of New Mexico history professor who joked in class about the September 11 attacks has been barred from teaching freshmen for now, the school said Monday.

Professor Richard Berthold will also get a letter of reprimand and undergo review, said Brian L. Foster, university provost.

The 55-year-old tenured professor told a freshman history class just after the attacks that "anyone who can blow up the Pentagon has my vote."

Berthold has apologized for his comment, which he called "an incredibly stupid joke." He did not immediately return a phone call Monday.

Berthold stayed off campus for a brief period while police investigated obscene and threatening calls to the history department. He also said he was assaulted in front of his home.

It raises an interesting question: would you have more respect for Osama bin Lauden, if, instead of flying planes into the WTC towers, the two planes had hit the US Capitol Building and White House killing evil politicians instead?”

Families of WTC victims angered at Bush campaign ads

NEW YORK -- Some families of the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack expressed anger Thursday at President Bush's use of ground zero images in his new campaign ads, accusing him of using the attack for political gain.

Until Bush cooperates with the federal commission that is investigating the nation's preparedness before the attacks and its response "by testifying in public under oath ... he should not be using 9-11 as political propaganda," said Kristen Breitweiser, of Middletown Township, N.J., whose husband, Ronald Breitweiser, 39, died in the World Trade Center.

"Three-thousand people were murdered on President Bush's watch," Breitweiser said. "He has not cooperated with the investigation to find out why that happened."

The first three campaign ads, unveiled at campaign headquarters in suburban Washington on Wednesday, will run on broadcast channels in about 80 markets in 18 states, most of which are expected to be competitive, and nationwide on select cable networks.

Two of the spots show pictures of the destruction at the World Trade Center and include pictures of an American flag flying amid the debris. They also feature images of firefighters working through the wreckage.

"I oppose anyone using it to promote their personal agenda," said Sally Regenhard, whose firefighter son, Christian Regenhard, 28, died on Sept. 11, 2001.”

WASHINGTON -- House Speaker Dennis Hastert has hardened his opposition to extending the deadline for the independent commission studying the Sept. 11 attacks, even as the panel's leaders pleaded Wednesday for more time to complete their work.

Hastert (R-Ill.) told Republican lawmakers in a meeting Wednesday that he would not bring up any legislation to grant the commission extra time, said spokesman John Feehery.

The speaker "still doesn't feel the commission needs any extra time," Feehery said, adding that a later deadline also would make the panel "a political issue" during the campaign.

“Toy In Candy Bags Depicts Plane Flying Into Building

MIAMI -- Small toys showing an airplane flying into the World Trade Center were packed inside more than 14,000 bags of candy and sent to small groceries around the country before being recalled.

Lisy Corp., the wholesaler that distributed the candy, said Friday that the toys were purchased in bulk from a Miami-based import company.

The toys came in an assortment purchased sight unseen from L&M Import in Miami and included the toys depicting the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on the twin towers, whistles and other small toys, said Luis Pedron, Lisy's national sales manager. The invoice said the toy was a plastic swing set.

"I hate to blame the importer. He probably did not know what he was getting. He brings them in 40-foot containers. But whoever made it knew exactly what they were making," Pedron said.

Pedron said Lisy did not notice the small plastic figurines until two people complained, but there is no mistaking what the toys represent: At the bottom of each is the product number 9011.

“A Houma woman was so angry that cold food was served to her at a Thibodaux restaurant Wednesday night that she called 911, police said.

Officers arrived at Malt-N-Burger on Canal Boulevard about 8:30 p.m., where they found Sharita Williams, 30, fuming because her onion rings were cold, according to a Thibodaux Police report.

Williams told police the food was cold when she received it and the attendant refused to replace it with a new order, the report says.

At that point, Williams, of 132 Senator Circle, dialed 911.

She was arrested and issued a summons for misuse of the 911 system. She was released and given a December court date.
