What's the ONE hike you look forward to in 2002? The one above all others? The one you can't do without this year? Have you already planned it?

What's The One Hike?
Finish the Northville-Placid trail. Did approximately half of the trail last summer in addition to numerous hikes in and around the High Peaks area of the Adirondacks. The Northville-Placid Trail runs from the southern Adirondacks up through the heart of the Adirondacks and finishes at Averyville Road outside of Lake Placid. It's about 132 miles and passes through some of the most remote and beautiful areas of the park. Views, solitude, and just plain beauty. Can hardly wait to get back up.

TownDawg, I would like that. Depending on the weather I may go to the Bridgestone/Firestone Wilderness area this week for short hike.

Crime is still pretty low here in Mayberry, so I have a lot of time to think, and there can never be only ONE forthcoming excellent hike. They're all great:

--Came back early this aft. from a simple 24-hr. Christmas-Eve overnight to Fire Island National Seashore. The pounding of the surf, the swirling wind, brilliant sunshine, polychrome orange sunset...excellent

--Friday I'm gonna start a (local, for me) very-tough 25 mi. trail in Harriman State Park, The Suffern-Bear Mtn. Trail. Buddy's wife is gonna drop us at the trailhead. We'll take bus back from Bear Mtn.late next day.

--Easter Vacation-- setting logistics, bookings for desert hiking in the Superstition Wilderness, AZ.

--Next Summer-- Still scratching my chin over this one, but will let y'all know. I certainly will have both East-Coast adventures and tohers thousands of miles away. Merry Xmas!

I have several hikes I plan to do in 2002, including the Presidentials in NH, but to choose one I would say the 101 miles of the AT through Shenandoah NP. SNP is one of my favorite places to visit and I hope to see it all via the AT in late May.

Walkindude, your LBL hike is coming up quick. That trail is on my to-do list, as is making another shot at getting to the Black Hills (do not pass through Badlands, do not collect dehydration). But what will actually transpire this coming year will probably be a surprise. The real goal for 2002 is to hike with a TTer or two or three.

Can't wait
We started new jobs last year, so had almost no vacation time and were unable to do anything more than a couple of long weekends. Next summer we'll finally have two whole weeks to go to Montana and explore the Beartooths. I bought the guidebook and maps and have started thinking about what areas we want to explore. My idea is to not plan too much in detail, but just play it by ear. My husband may have other plans though. He probably won't start getting into it until August sometime, but being an engineer, he'll undoubtedly end up with a detailed plan of some sort. Whether we follow it or not is entirely a different matter.

Leaving the 18th for a 5 day hike with our management team in the Ozarks. Instead of coming back to Memphis, I am staying over for the Ozark ECT which will give me a 10 day hike with only one vacation day burned. I would say this has got to be the "favorite" for the year.

Some relatives from DC and my family are meeting at Mt. Rogers in mid-June. 4 adults and 5 kids doing dayhikes. The ponies should be a real plus with the kids. Not b'packing, but good enough with a 30 month old and 7 month old(ages in June).

2nd place will be a possible Smokies trip with the wife in the Fall. She's never been backpakcing, but come Sept the youngest will be 10 months and old enough for my sister to keep the kids for the weekend.
