It is time for a real stove help me spen d my moneyView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 30 of 30 messages posted.
“For Xmass I got a 5 piece set of GSI hard anodized nonstick cooking pans and pots. I currently an using an alcahol stove wiith a dryer ventshaft as my pot stand. THe stove is very uncontrolable, it is eather on or off. In the instructions of this new toy it tell the reader to prolong the life of the non sticknes to make sure that the flame doesn't go over the edges of the pot. I think it is time to get a real stove, so I can controlably cook on it. I want white gass because my friend for Xmass got the dragon fly, and when we do 10 days on the AT this summer it would be stupid for one stove to be white gass and the other giga power. If one stove breaks you can use the flue from that stove in the other stove, but if to different fuel stoves one breaks that has lots of fuel and the other runs out of fuel, you're foocked. I'm thinking of the XGK, Dragon fly, or the Snow peaks white gass stove. PLease tell me abou these stoves and any others that you think are good.” 12:44:55 PM 12/26/01 “I have the dragonfly. It's a good stove but it is unbearably loud. People who have been with me when I've used it call it the Boeing. I don't use it anymore for that reason.” 12:47:41 PM 12/26/01 “MSR Whisperlite Internationale! Mine has never failed me and it burns on White gas, unleaded gas or kerosene.” 12:56:31 PM 12/26/01 12:59:34 PM 12/26/01 “Glad to hear that Spam, I got one for Christmas and plan on trying it out in my mom's backyard tonight while we're here visiting. 24" of snow so far with more falling now.” 4:35:51 PM 12/26/01 Geez! “Of all people, the one who drafted the TT Rules, you obviously didn't do a search for stoves first before asking for recommendations?” 4:41:14 PM 12/26/01 “Optimus Nova. It's supposed to be the best thing going. But in any case at twice the price of its nearest competitor it's going to impress on the trail and isn't that what it's really all about?!” 4:52:04 PM 12/26/01 “you're foocked? What are the chances a stove would break?” 5:27:33 PM 12/26/01 i dont know abot stoves “but i sure like my new headlamp from petzl. i'm new so i dont have a stove yet:-(. only a rei pack and a oversized 0 deg mummy bag that is a foot to long for me....” 5:37:56 PM 12/26/01 The Perfect Stove “ESBIT!!!!” 5:39:11 PM 12/26/01 whats esbit? “....” 5:41:16 PM 12/26/01 bear with me please “i am very new to this stuff what would u recomend for a brand new newbie” 5:47:08 PM 12/26/01 hello? “wow for a chat u all are real chatty?” 5:54:49 PM 12/26/01 “this is a forum, not a chat.” 6:04:39 PM 12/26/01 “as for a stove for a newbie - start with an alky stove like the cat stove or possibly the turbo V8 stove - they are easy to make and work fairly well burning denatured alcohol - play with it until you see what works and what doesn't work for cooking - ie cook your dinner every night outdoors with the alky stove until you decide whether you can put up with its limitations. If you decide to go to solid fuel try the esbit fuel tabs - cooking will not be much different from the alky stoves but ... YMMV and you may like the solid fuel more than the alky. After that consider possibly the zip stove (a wood burner) its good for more posibilities than the alky or esbit types but it does weigh more - 16 oz. - fuel is twiggs picked up on the ground or generally any combustible like wood - ie it can burn dried dung if need be. Next check out the gaz type of stoves such as the MSR pocket rocket - generally good, easily adjustable, easy to light and a good choice - they have a few oddities like the gaz bottle gets cold due to gass expansion from liquid state but generally a good first stove choice. After that then think about the white gas type of stoves - many people use them and like them but they are generally more expensive and somewhat heavier. They will often give a good range of cooking options but check for noise level and adjustable flame level and probability of a seal failure and generally talk with someone that uses one before making up your mind on that type. At the higher end there are the multifuel types - again many good choices but with the same issues as the white gas stoves pluse depending on the fuel there may be added issues wrt soot and clogged jet(s).” 6:05:17 PM 12/26/01 thx hog “i was thinking of getting the pocket rocket but my sister thinks that i need the most expensive multi feul out there and all i really want is a nice inexpsensive one because i have no job but will be soon going into the coast gaurd” 6:11:27 PM 12/26/01 “I have a pocket rocket. I like it. I just made a pepsi can alcohol stove and it has the same boil time as the pocket rocket. And it's smaller and lighter.” 6:12:57 PM 12/26/01 “HOI covered it very good. I have nothing more to add.” 6:13:28 PM 12/26/01 “i concur, citizen dude.” 6:17:43 PM 12/26/01 “By all means follow HOI's advice and then after you have a couple hundred trail miles under your belt toss all those store bought stoves in the garbage and revert back to the pepsi/alcohol stove. You'll soon see the light through the marketing blitz subjected to your little impressionable mind. Keep a whisperlight around in case you do some snow camping though. Better yet... go raw and save the money for some xtal meth.” 7:53:29 PM 12/26/01 “a little sassy, ain't we? heh heh!” 8:20:06 PM 12/26/01 “God I love this place. Tea - I'm jealous, I want the GSI set. I highly reccomend (like Rad) the Primus Himalaya Multi-fuel. Best stove I've ever owned, not really a situation where you ever wouldn't use that stove.” 8:39:20 PM 12/26/01 “The whisperlight....I have one and it's great...Get that one it has never done me wrong....” 10:30:53 PM 12/26/01 “I think it is coming down to The Primus or Optomus.” 10:35:23 PM 12/26/01 stove “I have a MSR whisperlight. I don't think that you need to get the whisperlight international just because why spend the more if you only plan on using white gas. I have a friend and he has a dragonfly. It is a good stove also and I think it is less tippy.” 10:36:07 PM 12/26/01 “I agree......” 10:40:22 PM 12/26/01 It's All Good “Take everyone's advice, Mr.Tea.” 8:31:08 AM 12/27/01 “See the only resone I don't want rads snow peak stove, is how do you judge how much fule is left? Its not a liquide so you cant take off teh to and look down to see. Or can you???????” 10:29:11 AM 12/27/01 “you shake it. you can tell. i have never ran out on the trail. i save the ones that are too low, and use them when i am basecamping or slackpacking with friends.” 10:35:00 AM 12/27/01 “weighing the canister also works if you have a good scale” 10:54:27 AM 12/27/01
