Marmot Precip????

“I'm looking into getting some rain/windgear. I'm looking into lightweight..something that if you don't use it you probably forget it's there. I'm ditching my last old standby..the pvc poncho. I've read RAVE reviews aobut the precip...is this enough...what about one higher on the line..the marmot thunderstorm...i may also be considering frog toggs, and red ledge...they all seem the same to me as far as use, price, and weight”

“I've been wanting to replace my coated jacket also. I've heard a lot of good things about the Precip. It sure is talked up well on the lightweight lists.

I'm worried about their sizing. The charts look awful short, sleeves and inseam lengths. I don't have shops to go to and see the real thing.

The pants are very lightweight. Yes, you will forget you have them. Haven't had to use them in a downpour yet.”

“I have the precip jacket and pants. Great stuff and very light. As far as sizing, both mine are medium. The jacket fits comfortably over a lightweight fleece jacket. Worn over hiking pants, the pants fit about right but just a tad on the snug side. I am 5'9" and weigh 175. My waist is 32" and inseam 31." I don't know my sleeve length but I wear a 42 regular coat. I hope this helps with your size prob and happy shopping.”

“I bought the jacket this summer, and it is nicely made and very light, but I have not encountered rain when I was carrying it. It doesn't have the lenght/rear-end coverage of a parka, so I wouldn't recommend it alone if you are sure to be encountering rain storms. I've been waiting for a sale to get the pants.

I looked at the Red Ledge sets and they seem like a good deal since they are cheaper, perhaps not as full of features and the tests I read said not as breathable. I might get a pair of their pants if the deal is better than the Precip pants.”

I have both tops and bottoms and love them. I think that's what I said the first time around. I might have babbled on about when, where and for how much but I'm not to sure anymore.”

“I bought a Precip jacket last year. Gortex is ancient history for me now.”

“Well, I got my REI jacket and the thing is perfect so far. I haven't had it on in the shower yet but I can tell it is breathable. The quality seams very high and the hood is a winner. The visor has what feels like foam as the stiffener so it isn't flimsy and it's not too ridgid. There is a velcro adjuster so you can keep it out of your face and it'll turn with your head somewhat. I'l try it in the rain and report back.”

“I've been testing my Marmot Precip jacket this winter switching back and forth between my 3 layer Goretex jacket and my conclusion is the Precip doesn't breathe as well as Goretex. Condensation builds up faster and is slower to dry so I wind up twice as wet in the Precip for twice as long. Worse yet the fabric has started to develop small cracks in the hipbelt area so it's not as durable as Goretex either. After testing this jacket I think it just doesn't cut it as a good all weather shell. It's lightweight and vents well on the plus side.”

“Can I be honest here? I don't even look at the brand names of my stuff all that much. All I know is I have a bunch of hikin g#&%!$ I keep together in one corner of a room. It is for backpacking. I don't worry too much about the name on the label, or much care how it works. That is part of the beauty of it and the fun of it. If I cared, I would subscribe to backpacker magazine or something other poser who think they are backpackers subscribe to. For me, backpacking has never been, nor will ever be about sport. THat's all.”

“Rich I am sorry your stuff worked out that way for ya. I have had both the pants and the jacket for over 2 years now and I haven't had the same results. I really like my set. I even went back to the pants in the waist area and also around the jacket to look for cracking tonight and I still see nothing like that. I gotta tell ya I love that stuff. I have to agree that it is not as good a breathing fabric as Goretexx but then it's at least 1/3rd the price. For a low/mid band shell though it does quite well.
I also have a similar jacket from Patagonia, it is just as good. I gave it to my wife for her to wear because I got the Marmot top.”

“I like mine, Ma Goose likes hers. It breathes as well as any of my GoreTex garments. Let's face it, if you're exerting yourself, your gonna be wet if you're butt-@ss naked. What makes you think you're gonna stay dry with clothing on???”

“It's possible I got one that was sewn with a bad run of fabric. I really haven't used it that much until this winter, but I just started to notice damage this week.”

“I don't expect to stay dry during exertion especially for how much I sweat, but the Precip just feels clammy to me. Again maybe I got a bad jacket since the coating isn't holding up.”

“Take it back and get them to give you a new pair. I always remind them when gear fails, the word spreads thru the backpacking community. They usually relent, when they realize how important it is for us, that the gear we purchase works as intended.”

I hike with people who own this jacket and love it. That is the reason I bought mine. I purchase my gear after thorough research and if I find someone who owns the gear I'm looking at, um so besser. I am not impressed with magazine articles.”

“BTW, richb, I also agree that you should ask for an exchange. All the marketing types know that bad PR is bad business. I doubt that they'll give you a hard time.”
