That means, of course, that I have ensured it will never rain on me again during a backpacking trip. Unless I decide to leave them at home....” 10:31:53 PM 2/26/03 “I chose the Precip as well. Almost went with the Frog Toggs until an AT thru-hiker showed me his. The Precip makes a great 3-season shell when you have a midweight PolarTec to go with it. Great for layering and it isn't bulky. Blocks the wind great and it seems to breathe really well. I didn't read a review on it. Just sort of watched the discussions about it from a distance and did some comparisons from there.” 12:22:55 AM 2/27/03 “I've got the jacket, but I haven't used it for bpking yet...only for hiking. I do wish the hood could fold into the collar...hate it hanging around.” 1:19:23 AM 2/27/03 “I like my precips. I've used the jacket and pants for 4 season trips. I had to replace the pants because they leaked, but I think anything will wear when worn every weekend. I will be sending them back to Marmot. I read reviews from people who actually use the gear before I buy. Unless its a good weight savings and no one buys it because of the cost. I took a chance with the Bearikade and the Snow Peak Ti stove. I'm happy with both.” 1:32:39 AM 2/27/03 “I have used a Precip jacket for the past two years and it has performed well when needed. Like my heavier Gortex rainwear, it spends 90% of it's time unworn in my pack. If I'm going to spend most of my time just carrying rainwear "just in case", I might as well buy something that is lightweight like a Precip. I bought it because most of my hiking friends were using one. The Precip isn't breathable but it does have great ventilation if you take the time to make adjustments as needed. Gortex jackets are butt heavy and don't live up to their reputed breathability anyways. If Gortex clothing was as breathable as the manufactureres would like you to believe, they wouldn't need do add vents to them. I read reviews. No sense in wasting money on lemons.” 4:25:27 AM 2/27/03 “I agree that the Precip doesn't breath as well as Goretex but the space savings in my pack is well worth it. In colder weather when I'll be wearing a shell most of the time, I like the Goretex better. I was convinced to buy them after reading the raves here. Glad I did.” 6:10:35 AM 2/27/03 “I have a Marmot Precip, and noticed the same condensation problem on a cold dayhike. Of course, all the water was coming out of me, not from the sky, so I can hardly fault the Precip for that. I opened up the pit zips and the situation got better. I wear mine as a light overjacket with insulating layers underneath on during cold weather. My insulating layer got a little wet, but I was never cold.” 8:25:18 AM 2/27/03 “I think that you have to look at the intended purpose for the item of clothing. The Precip is ultralight rain gear. It is not meant to be climbed in, it is not intended for heavy duty use. It was developed for bpking were weight is an issue more than durability. I think that durablity was even mentioned on the tag. If I was hiking in the Northwest where it rains more than it is sunny, I would have heavier weight gear. Here in the Northeast, where yes we do get our big rain storms, they do not typicalll last for days(except for when I was camping in the Catskills last fall). The Precip gear was developed as a backup. Something to keep in your backpack for those rain storms. I love mine, it serves its purpose great.” 8:40:06 AM 2/27/03 “Peoples’ bodies are all different. From people who sweat a lot to others who hardly sweat at all, so certain clothing will perform differently for different people. LtHiker hit it right on the head. Myself I couldn’t imagine wearing rain gear unless it was cold and raining, I’m a heat furnace and sweat a lot.” 10:27:18 AM 2/27/03 “I've been pondering getting a precip set for my upcoming trek through S. America but I'm starting to back away from it. I recently returned my Patagucci shell to them after it started to delaminate after 5 years. I'm bummed and told them I'd like a new jacket. We'll see what happens. That thing weighs a little over a pound but I think the added durability is worth the extra weight and less compressability. But for shorter jaunts into the woods, I agree, the precip seems ideal. When I get back, I'll definitely be picking up a set.” 11:27:08 AM 2/27/03 “Biz we get better gear reviews from the people right here. Certainly more responses, better unbiased comments and it doesn't cost each of us $5.95” 9:55:56 AM 3/02/03 “I had been looking t the Precip as a light weight alternative to packing my Goretex, on day hikes or those rare BP trips where it would probably be staying in my pack anyways. Like Stanlee I was annoyed that nobody wanted to add so much as a little piece of velcro to roll up the hood. Also, the Precip and Columbia jackets were coated material and not a membrane, which would be my first choice. My main goal however was to find a lighter weight jacket, or there was no point. So, my requirements looked like this: under 1 lb in weight, preferably a membrane design, durable or at least reinforced in those abrasion prone areas, stowable hood, 'arms up' designed sleeves just because I really need that extra inch on each for these long arms of mine. The answer weighed in at less than 12 oz for a medium..... The good news was that it has everything I was looking for plus because it's designed for climbing, there's reinforement not only on the shoulders, but at bottom front as well, and it's cut short so it doesn't bunch up at your hip belt, or harness. The sleeves are super long. The bad news was I had to drive to Seattle to get it. There won't be any more available until fall, when the new colours come out. I can't wait to try it out !!” 12:12:47 PM 3/02/03 12:14:28 PM 3/02/03 “Hodgeman, check Sierra trading post for the Reach jacket. They had it on sale not long ago for $39.95” 3:56:52 PM 3/02/03 “richb - the only thing worse than spending a little more than you wanted to, would be finding out that you didn't need to. Doh !! Fortunately, I don't see the Reach at Trading Post right now, but thanks anyway. Someone else might want to keep an eye open there” 4:17:25 PM 3/02/03 “I just checked and it looks like they sold out of the Reach jacket. I only saw the Bark, Flux and Flow jacket. At that price they probably didn't last long. I saw it in the catalog they sent me maybe 2 weeks ago.” 4:23:03 PM 3/02/03 “I was just at STP over the weekend and if you can get the Sierra Designs Peak Bagger, it looks like a really nice jacket. They had a bunch of them at the Reno outlet. Nice three layer. Light as hell and look smuch nicer than the Precip. I think Snow Nymph uses one. I was impressed but of course, I just got the Patagonia Microburst an hour earlier at the Patagonia outlet, so I wasn't in the market for a shell any longer :)” 6:11:08 PM 3/02/03 “I just got a Mountain Hardware Epic rain parka. Weight 13 oz. Very nice jacket and a alternative to the Precip worth looking at. Grat lakes Outfitters has it on sale for $99 and it's $140 everywhere else. Sorry I can't link to the actually product page. Those damn amatuers built a framed site. I did order Treebaits from there so ther are legit.” 8:40:16 PM 3/02/03 “Snow Nymph has the Precip” 9:03:35 PM 3/02/03 Marmot in general “Well folks I'm new here and I haven't got the swing of the board yet, but I do have a comment on Marmot as a company. It used to be Marmot was my favorite outdoor manufacturer, but no longer. I bought one of their membrain coats several years ago. A year ago I went out and noticed my coat was leaking. Then I saw why... The membrain was peeling off.... I contacted (email) Marmot to see what they would do about it...after all this is a 450 coat.... They didn't even respond to my email.... I waited over 6 months and tried again... Still no response.... I wouldn't buy another Marmot product again.... Even distributors like Cabella's will stand behind their products.... Lesson learned... So I would recommend buying someone elses stuff.... Terry” 11:27:53 AM 3/19/03 “send it to them” 11:31:05 AM 3/19/03 “That's what I'm saying. Get the returns department addy. Write them a letter telling them your disappointment, reminding them of their lifetime guarantee, and then mail the whole package to them. Of course, I just bought a bunch of Marmot stuff so I can't comment to the wear quality of their gear...” 11:34:28 AM 3/19/03 Trust issue “Well ductape I would, but I just don't trust them anymore....” 11:34:37 AM 3/19/03 “Many companies do not yet take email seriously. It seems fairly obvious from the last of a response that Marmot is one of these companies. If you want real action, get out a pen and paper and write them. If you still don't get a reaction, return the item to the store where you bought it. It may take a complaint from a retailer to get something accomplished.” 11:36:36 AM 3/19/03 “Oops, "lack of a response"...” 11:37:08 AM 3/19/03 “Do you work for a competitor (Cabella's maybe?) or are you just not that bright? Sometimes email doesn’t even get through. Sometimes it is buried in mountains of spam. Call them or write them. Marmot Warranty We warrant every product we make to be free of manufacturer defects. This is surprising, give them a call.” 11:52:58 AM 3/19/03 “Yep... for a 450 dollar coat - I'd have thunk ya might try more'n two emails in one year.... especially if it matters enought that you are still griping a year later. When in doubt, follow the warrantee instructions indicated in the manufacturer's guarantee. That oughta be a no-brainer.” 12:00:27 PM 3/19/03 Tell ya what Violin “Stick it!!! I AM THE CUSTOMER... I DO NOT WORK FOR ANY OUTDOOR COMPANY or DISTRIBUTOR.... I control your destiny, not the other way around.... If you want me to be happy then you put out the effort or else I spend my money at your competitors.... I warned you people that I would take on a rampage of bad press to satify my need for being treated like some jerk... and now you post I'm not that bright... HA....... Double screwed MARMOT.... Oh and the rest of you... Can you really count on a company who can't read email??? Or who treats customers like they're doing YOU a favor... And Violin... That IS the email address I sent to TWICE, many months apart, just to be sure there wasn't some issue with the service.... Oh, and I mentioned Cabela's because that's who's getting my business from now on... At least they try....” 12:05:42 PM 3/19/03 pedxing “Re-read the post...Cause you sure didn't get it the first time...” 12:08:52 PM 3/19/03 “If that's the tone you used in your emails, no wonder they didn't respond.” 12:09:05 PM 3/19/03 “Terry, if you're trying to sway the general public here away from Marmot, I don't think you'll succeed with your experience you posted.” 12:10:34 PM 3/19/03 bitpusher “They didn't respond because they don't care.... I am angry about having solicited Marmot products for 15 years to all my friends and now to be proven wrong by the very people I backed.... Sorry for the RED posts, but I'm highly put off...” 12:12:10 PM 3/19/03 “Was it scary on that tractor at night?” 12:14:26 PM 3/19/03 Why would I care “No smileygirl I could care less if you want to experience being screwed yourself... I want to make myself feel better for having been a fool for 15 years... You choose to listen or not... I still have tons of Marmot stuff and I pray each trip it doesn't let me down, cause I know I'm on my own...” 12:15:06 PM 3/19/03 “...I warned you people that I would take on a rampage of bad press to satify my need for being treated like some jerk... Terry, is this directed toward the people on this board, or towards Marmot? I didn't understand that part of your post.” 12:15:41 PM 3/19/03 “It sounds like your'e getting the wrong email. Have you called or written to them?” 12:15:44 PM 3/19/03 “Oh, I see, this rant is all about making yourself feel better? Ok, now I certainly will not choose to listen to your opinion! Why don't you let Marmot know how you feel about them with a follow-up letter to them? I'm actually stuck in the same boat with a contractor right now, and a letter sent to the right place could help.” 12:18:09 PM 3/19/03 “Are we being trolled?” 12:18:37 PM 3/19/03 “To be honest, I think you haven't tried hard enough. If you're really serious about trying to get warranty service on your equipment, you should try harder. If you're not willing to try harder, then you have no one but yourself to blame. It is within the realm of possibility that both your emails were both discarded as spam, depending upon their content or subject line. I suggest you try again. Or write or call them, since they list both snail mail and phone numbers. I understand your anger, however, it seems misdirected. If I were in your shoes, I'd try a little harder to get my money's worth out of my gear.” 12:20:00 PM 3/19/03 “LMAO @ Violin!!” 12:20:33 PM 3/19/03 smileygirl “Sorry... Towards Marmot.... When I sent the 2nd email to them I clearly described the message they were sending me by ignoring my inquiries... Sorry to the rest of you also... I'm letting myself get upset...” 12:20:51 PM 3/19/03 “Whooooooooo... could imagine... ?” 12:23:45 PM 3/19/03 If you're not a troll.... “then one e-mail doens't seem enough to get upset over. Take some real action.” 12:25:53 PM 3/19/03 12:26:01 PM 3/19/03 “Cabella's sucks” 12:26:59 PM 3/19/03 “Call them and they will fix the problem. I have personaly always had great service from Marmot.” 12:30:26 PM 3/19/03 “Hey if you are that ticked at Marmot send me all of the Marmot gear that you have, including that jacket. I will call them and send it back and I bet within 2-4 weeks I have a brand new jacket. A friend of mine burned a hole in his marmot jacket with a cig and the gave him a new jacket. Something is wrong here, but send me your stuff and you will not have to worry about Marmot again.” 12:36:04 PM 3/19/03 “Yeah, I'll buy it off of you” 12:43:22 PM 3/19/03 “But Smiley... he sent two emails in that year not one. Terry: I re-read your post. Kindly tell me what part I didn't get. OK I'll tell you another part I don't get: you are this mad and this upset, yet all you did try to set things right was two emails. If you are trying to get business for Cabelas, you are doing a bad job of it. Hmmmm did Cabelas have a dispute with Marmot recently?” 2:48:48 PM 3/19/03
