At My Job

“The lumberyard is right near the hwy. and my office sits right in the front. One of the things I love is when hwy. patrol cars catch someone speeding and then fly past at about Mach 1. I always think, "Poor Sucker." What quirks do you guys enjoy to make the day pass at your jobs?”

“I listen to the radio, balance my checkbook, and stare endlessly at my GSMNP map planning different types of loops for bp or day excursions.

I'm really in the boon docks, so I get some people that are just freakin' bizarre. Some true to life hill billy types. I had a guy today ride up on a bicycle w/ a trailer made from bicycle parts. He had a ZZ Top beard and he smelled nasty and he was all, "I need to get some 2x6's." I was thinking, "Whadda' Faaaa'?"”

I work on the 2nd floor of the shoshone bank building. I see right out on mainstreet.

Last summer the help from the restaurant across the street were out back and one of the girls showed three guys her tits. I swear to god. Then she let them grab them. Honest. Sad thing was she was only about 14 yrs old. Same age as my oldest.”

Sometimes I sing out loud to break up the monotony in cubeville, or I will stand up and do a quick gopher. I take long luxurious walks to the bathroom and water cooler, and frequent the breakroom to fix my lunch and watch tv.
I almost want to go back to my old job and work for my smelly old boss - at least there I can proud of my good work ethic. Here it is deteriorating...

We have a plastic bolling pin set that we play with in the hallway - we do it in front of our boss. He laughs.
And people ask me "Sshmokey, why on Earth would you complain about that, you freak!?"”

“I like to plan how I'm going to reorganize the whole filing system for better efficiency, but then I remember how my boss thinks it is "the most effective system" in the world. His "system" makes it impossible to find a damn thing and it has paperwork from the 70's that is completely irrevelant. I'm not allowed to throw anything out, even ads. ARRRRGGHHH!

Another thing I do is eat alot of M&M's and arrange them in groups by color. It takes up a surprising chunk of time.

“I try to keep busy. That way the time seems to pass faster.

I only bag groceries. But I smake an effort to treat each customer as if the supermarket is mine and I want the customer to be happy and to return. When I'm not bagging, I find other chores to do.

I work hard. After all, I still want to get ahead and be a success in life. (I'm 69.)”

“Well, nowslimmer, it's the "haul water, chop wood" thing. If you can find a zen in bagging groceries, then you are ahead of most people. Thus far, I haven't found that kind of zest for my job. This isn't to say that I'm crappy to the customers. I treat everyone nicely and helpfully, even the weirdos.”

“Well maybe you should know more about the work that I do than assuming that I don't apply myself. Not sure if that was directed towards me, but figgered I'd bite.
I am a technical writer for an environmental software company, and the company is very big so work here is real slow.
I actually make up jobs for me to do, like organizing style meetings for all the tech writers, and I volunteer for any documentation I can get my hands on.
I also talk to my boss and try to probe for more work that I can do.
When all else fails, I clean my cube, and try to make it through the day by passing time (see my posts above).

I passed the time today playing on the internet, either trail talk or doing some shopping. Listened to some CD's, played with a paper airplane. The day went suprisingly fast, considering there is a skeleton crew here.

But the day is done (or close enough) and I'm outta here! See you all in the new year!”

My work attitude changed (improved) on this job.

I have a BS, have completed course work for an MS plus more, about 50 post graduate courses. I have had my own business, and have gone through two small fortunes.

I raised one daughter alone for 5 yrs. She graduated from Johns Hopkins the summer before last. Another daughter I got back from out of the country after 9 yrs. and had her with me since last Christmas, until she started at a midwest college in late August. I have 4 other children.

I have no regrets. I just try to live each day to the fullest. I am active, healthy, loved, get to do a lot of backpacking and look forward to the future. This world is great, fascinating and exciting. Enjoy it.”

“lessee.. I get creative in the cheapest way I can. I melt a hunk o cheese over fresh spinach. I chop up a fresh salad without lettuce - peppers, cheese, turkey, ham, peas, corn - whatever I can find to mix.
I've grilled portobella mushrooms the size of steaks.
Or I make some chip dip (sour cream with salt and lots of garlic powder - simple but tastes great)!”
