Tin cans
Why are there upside tin cans hanging from the shelters? I am puzzled by this... saw them at the Mt. Leconte shelter in the GSMNP.
:D

If you hang your food from the inside of them, mice can't get to it.

that makes sense, but these one's were upside where the open part of the tin can is facing the ground.. and a hole made through the other side with a knot in the string to hold it..

I'm hiking on the AT through the Smokies next Spring. How do you make one of those "can, hang a food bag thingies?"

They have cables outside all the shelters now for hanging your food. They are nice, bears nor mice can get to your food.

Drill a hole in the middle of a CD. bring your own string. Sometimes there's not enouh hanging for all the shelter campers.
Mice in shelters are very comical.

There's a mouse at Icewater shelter in the smokies who's perfectly round. You should have seen the poor thing try to go through a hole in the wall. It could only waddle!

Hey walkindude, what kind of cds are you using that don't already have a hole in the center?

As far as music CD's, I still use a cassette player. Susan has one in her car and I think one is on the stereo in the living room but I don't personally use one myself.

the hole in a cd is pretty big. do you tie a stick to the string? i've never seen this contraption of yours.

Yeah, use a stick. I used it this past weekend as a matter of fact

that would definately work better than a can. plus, you have a good emergency mirror.

My aching back
Shelters give me the creeps. Too many creeps and critters, plus they are too hard to sleep on.

They used to have 3 sided shelters in the GSMNP-Stayed at one on the
Rich Mountain Trail-but I hear they have taken them all down, anybody know why?
The mouse cans I have seen are old potted meat or tuna cans.

Hey a cd works great for an emergency mirror too.

They did not take down all the shelters they took down the fences in front of the shelters.

The only shelters that are still in place that are not on the AT are Mt LeConte, Kephart Prong and Laurel Gap.

Just this year they made Birch Spring Gap into a tent site but I don't know if they took down the shelter yet.

the bear issue in the Smokies has been blown completely out of proportion...just use your head and you'll be fine-nucc97(Big S-GAME '00)

The plan to remove the fences came long before the bear attack.

Idiots were baiting bears through the fences to get good photos and were creating problem bears.

It's a huge success on the part of the rangers that only one person got killed.

HPM-
The shelter we stayed at did not have a fence-just bunks made from welded wire-metal roof-not more than 7 feet tall in front about 4 feet at the rear. It was real sweet. Bears did not bother us,
but a herd of feral pigs paid us a visit.

those cans don't keep the mice away they can get into anything, and they chew gortex jackets in seconds, I think you need an old LP record to keep them away or stick a cat in your pack.

I have to hang everything on the bear cables.

Sometimes the mice will ignore food and go after the salt residue in your gear.

Oh nucc97, you are right on both counts.
