the moss outland or the moss hooped outland “does anybody use or have used or know somebody that has used one of these? what is the word on them? good ventilation with the windows at each end? i am looking at one of these as well as a hilleberg. choices, choices. i can get the outland for $229 and the outland hooped for $289. might be worth the cost savings for a little more weight then the akto and about the same weight as the nallo 2. does anyone know af any sales going on on the bibler I tent or eldorado? they sure want a lot of money for those bibler tents. i know there are other tent threads going on but i don't recall hearing anything on the moss tents around here.” 6:16:13 PM 12/28/01 “The local REI out here had a number of Moss tents in their closeout rack just this week, can't recall which ones as I am (finally) out of my tent-search mode. Good prices as I recall... I looked high & low for anyone who discounted Bibler & couldn't find anyone. In fact I bought mine from a local outfitter who usually gives me 20% on anything (I send him a lot of my boy scout biz), he wouldn't discount Bibler beyond 10%. Have you checked out Integral Design tents? Very good products, similar to Bibler in design but a little less expensive. I think their MK-1 is similar to the Bibler eldorado” 6:23:59 PM 12/28/01 “i did look at them a little. i haven't heard much on integral design either. they do look very similar to the elderado and I tent. What tent did you get?” 6:25:53 PM 12/28/01 “I ended up w a Bibler I tent. For me it came down to either that or the MK-1 lite. I got a little bit of a deal on the Bibler, and the outfitter is someone I know will stand behind it 100%. Rockbuck has an MK-1, good looking tent, I liked it a lot also.” 6:33:06 PM 12/28/01 “I ended up w a Bibler I tent. For me it came down to either that or the MK-1 lite. He's probably about 6'1" also (a guess). I'm sure he'll check in here soon & can give you better info... I know he really likes his ID, we all kinda had a gear "show & tell" on Sunday A.M. before hiking out, he was extolling the virtues of his MK-1, Snow Nymph was selling her Stephenson Warmlight 2R, and I was pushing my OR Advanced Bivy for everything except winter / snow use...(which is what I ended up getting the Bibler for).” 6:45:39 PM 12/28/01 “I have a Moss Outland, the 4 season version...It has stood up to 70mph winds on Mount Shasta ( we checked with the 5th Season and they were 70 mph). My main partner and I used it for heavy duty mountaineering for years (she's 5'2")....it is a very small tent for two (I think they now call it a one person) and if you use it with someone else you better be REAL good friends. It is rather heavy for it's size, but bomb proof....not much in the way of sit up room though. We never had a problem with ventilation, although we only used it in the winter, up high.” 7:17:17 PM 12/28/01 “All Moss tents are very heavy for their size. Single wall tents like Bibler's and ID'd work better in colder conditions. In damp conditions, they have a big problem with condensation as the PTFE wets out and can no longer transfer vapor. Hildeberg tents look good. the Stephenson Warmlight supposed to be a really nice winter tent except for problems reported about accellerated damage to the fly from UV light. Marmot has a few 4 season models out and the Up High model looks like a really good tent except for the lack of vestibule. Eureka has some 4 season tents out there and is supposed to have a single wall tent out in 2002.” 7:54:10 PM 12/28/01 “I used a Outland for a long time. Great little tent for foul weather. A bit small for a larger person. I'm only 5'6". I would get the hooped version to use for pack storage and cooking in emergencies. I've had mine stay dry in 6" of water.(Pitched in a low spot)after seam gripping it.Also had it 3/4 burried in a snow storm. The newer models look like they don't pitch as tight as my 92. Wish I still had it. I saw the Hooped on sale for 249.00 on the net, but can't remember where. I think it was "Backcountry Gear"” 10:41:45 PM 12/28/01 “didjfan brought up a good point, the new Moss tents aren't nearly the same quality as when Wayne Moss was building them...when REI bought the company they seemed to drop a couple notches in terms of quality control....Amy never could get a replacement fly to fit like her original (Stardome tent) and mentioned that all the "new" Moss's didn't seem as tight as our older tents.” 11:01:06 PM 12/28/01 “I thought that MSR owns Moss and Walrus now. Eventually, you will have to look under MSR if you want some of these models.” 1:22:57 AM 12/29/01
