So Sass and I picked up the Mi TOPO! program today. Its pretty slick. Its simple to use and has lots of cool features (GPS downloads/uploads,custom trailmaking...) but it doesnt have many existing trails. I guess I will change that as I hike. It was worth the loot and hopefully will bring a new techno-geeky side to my hiking.....

I just bought TOPO (National Geographic) and was comparing it with MapTech (Terrain Navigator)...both programs have much to offer, TOPO seems to offer more GPS functions, not sure yet, will have to play with it some more. I do miss not being able to save files as bmp's, I may be missing something here, but I think I can only share maps with other TOPO users...with MapTech I can send them as bmp files, which most anyone can open. I do like being able to add trails, climbing and ski routes and other information from their mapXchange site...very cool feature....

Birch if you have the National Geographic TOPO, go here to download more trails for your area..

One interesting thing I found is the difference between the maps, the TOPO (1969) map shows streets near my house, but not my house, while MapTech (1965) shows my house, but not all the streets.

In Lassen, MapTech (1985) shows old fire roads, while TOPO (1995) doesn't show any of the old roads..........

Guess a guys just gotta have 2 map programs......
