What is your favorite beer
The best beer in the world is made in Fairbanks, Alaska. It is called silver gulch Pick-ax porter. If anyone one your ever get a chance to taste it. The ticket is to pour it into a glass and let it breath for a minute or so.

BEER!
I love Porters, and Stouts. My girlfriend works at a micro-brewery (Copper Dragon). They have a killer Porter and also an incredible Organic Oatmeal Stout.

Hmm. Well technically I swore off beer...except in cooking.

So today I'm making beer bread, beer marinated chicken, beer & krauts. he he he

m-nutz, I keep thinking you're m&m! After checking Phil's photo page I realize you're a guy! Ahhh. lol. I really need to post a pic there.

Our local hometown brewery is Thomas Creek. They have a good porter, and double bock, and brown ale. But they are only sold in a few outlets so it's hard to drive eight miles to the closest one just to buy them. Generally if I'm drinking American domestic it's usually Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Pete's Wicked Ale, or Sam Adams Lager. SNPA is $7.99 a sixpack but readily available. For just general hot summer day chugging you can't beat Sam Adams. Just enough hops to have a bite and the price is right.

Lately one of my business collegues from the "old" East Germany has been kind enough to bring me back some German beers that you can't get in the States (at least not here). Anyone ever had Kostritzer Schwarze bier, Radelberger Pilsner, or Freibergifch Bock (6.7 percent alcohol and kickass)? The German beers available at your local watering hole don't even come close.

Oh yeah. I have been known to accept the offer of a lukewarm Budwieser or three at the end of a ten day Llama Rama.

Of the European pilsners available in the States, I'll stick with the original, Pilsner Urquell. Definitely my favorite beer. A nice bitter edge. I'd love to get to Pilsen in the Czech Rep. and have it fresh.

There is a pub in a nearby town that has Harp on tap and that is nice and crisp.

Pekka, I thought you might have some of those coasters because they were a promotional item, three or four years ago, now, I guess (one per 6-pack, *G*).

I've sent those folks email about selling some of their souvenirs on that website, but no such luck.

Tilt, have you ever seen the movie 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being'? My whole train of thought during this thoughtful art film set in Czechoslovakia was disrupted when I realized during a bar scene that all those big brown bottles had the Pilsner Urquell label. I got thirsty and jealous at the same time.

There is no best beer!
Since the microbrewery revolution, which coincided with the education of the American beer drinker, there are many great beers to choose from!
I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you visit Belgium you will think you have died and gone to beer heaven. My next tour of Europe will include an extended stay in that wonderful country.
Our local brewery has a fantastic Imperial Stout on tap. You can savor one of those for a long time.

Pekka must be Czecha. I have some Bohemian friends out here on the Great Plains. Bunch of beer-lovin' farmers.

Dunadan, no Czech here, though my brother's first wife was a Czech from the Dakotas, and it was my brother who turned me on to Urquell. But I believe he did that before he married her.

There is a Rhinelander Beer, but it's not made here anymore, and I've never heard of any of our locals actually drinking it, even though it is cheap.

I do enjoy the Pilsner Urquell, too.

dayhiker, I agree with you any beer that is cold is good. I have tried some of the beer that you are suppose to drink warm or at room temperature and I don't like them. The colder the beer the better.

I'll have to rent that one. I did meet one fellow who swore that the pilsner in Pilsen is head and shoulders (aHem) above what we have in the States.

I had some allegedly fresh Czech beer at a cultural event on the Mall in D.C. in the Summer of 1995 that was quite tasty. It was a darker brew, though. I also found some Urquell just inside the Beltway near Alexandria for $18 a case!

It's funny what one remembers...

I had to go on a business trip to Rochester NY and other than my normal beer Killians Irish Red I drank some LaBlatt Blue and liked it. I was really suprised to find out the local Kroger store sells it and the price isnt bad either.

Pekka, I should have said that in Nashville the Kroger store carries it. A few yrs ago we went to Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City for vacation and at dinner one night I asked for a Molson Ice. No one there had even heard of it. I finally found out it was brewed for export only to the U.S.

I actually don't recall, but I'll try to check the cooler next time I'm at the store.

The G. Heileman brewery in LaCrosse is back in operation, BTW, as City Brewery. Along with their own label brews, they do contract brewing for others. One of the things they make is Smirnoff Ice. There was a feature on the place on our state PBS and the new owners said so many breweries had been scrapped through industry consolidation that there was limited capacity for the nation now. The LaCrosse brewery had been completely rebuilt before the whole Heileman fiasco. It would take $500 million to build it from scratch today and it almost went to the scrap heap before some former Heileman guys got a local group together to save it.

Support your local microbrew!

I'm still looking for my favorite. The most amazing was a Belgian Trappist Ale. I thought I was drinking nectar. Small sips, savoring each one.

I'm a fan of brown ales in general.
