They are a pain to roll up
too heavy
self inflating MY BUTT! Ya have to blow them up yourself
may gey punctured

Z-rest
lighter
folds up quickly
don't matter if they get punctured
no need to blow them up

Wanna Trade!!??!!??

That was the weight that came up when I hung it from my digital fish weigher.

I don't have either one but I will have to get one eventually. Which one is more comfortable and would the difference in weight make up for you being comfortable or uncomfortable. Just curious.

Ewker, I went back & forth on this one for a while. Z-rest, or Ridge Rest is a great lightweight option, but this was an area where I decided that the comfort provided by the Therma-rest was worth the extra pound. I am a light sleeper and I need all the help I can get. The few inches of air beneath me make a big difference.

I am old
I carry the thermarest guidelight long and a 3/4 ridge rest. The extra few ounces is worth the comfort. If I were to do it again, I would get the full length ridge rest and a 3/4 thermarest.

FYI. If you have trouble sleeping on the hard ground like me, I was carrying a standard long PLUS a closed cell pad. Now I just have the Thermarest LE which is 2" thick and weighs the same as the standard long. I love it. With the chair conversion kit, I have a great chair and pad for about 3 lbs.

The extra thickness of the Thermarest LE over the 1 or 1.5" thick versions is very noticable.

Well waddya know...

I've been using a Stearns self-inflating pad that my wife bought for my son a while back...

I was in Walmart last night and saw what I think is the same pad, and the label says it weighs THREE POUNDS!

And I bet it isn't half as comfy as the 2-1/2 lb. Thermarest LE...

That's why I need a scale. ;-)

Hi, I'm skullcap & I sleep with 2 pads
Right now I'm using 2 foam pads (both full length, 20 in. wide). What I'm considering replacing them with is a full length ultralite thermarest and full length 20 in. Z-rest pad. I am a very cold sleeper (especially my feet) and because of physical considerations I need a lot of padding. Do you guys think I would be better off getting that Thermarest LE instead? Width is not a factor, I'm narrow. It sounds like it would be more padding. Would it be just as warm? Phil, I seem to remember you posting once that you used the thermarest ultralight and a ridgerest. What say you?

Skully, Phil's post above indicates he now uses only the Thermarest.

I know that. That's why I want his opinion on this. I know that he's tried both and would be well qualified for a compare and contrast discussion.

i've been using the mountain hardwear backcountry 72. 2lbs., 6oz. it has both closed and open cell foam laminated together. not self inflating (no worry about leaks), nice little pocket in the cover to stuff fleece in for a pillow, good insulating and comfort. they have a trailhead 72 that is thicker. 2lbs., 13oz. they also have some that have built in chair conversion system.

Skully-go for it. I held off for years, but the benefit far outweighs the downside-weight & the fact they are a bit slick.
I do carry a repair kit just in case.
I'm sure I got the best end of the deal in the trade with WD-
You might be short enough for the 3/4 length-
JOSH MAN
9:10:25 AM
1/02/02

Yeah JOSHMAN. You got the best end of the deal $$ wise but for me I got what I needed. I like the feel of the Z-rest pad just as well and don't like the extra weight plus rolling a Thermorest up and babying it so as not to puncture it.
Now I have a 3/4 length for warmer days and the full length for bitter cold days.

I'm happy! :@D

I have looked at a lot of websites trying to find someone who is selling this Backpackers Combo by Cascade Designs. It consist of a Therm-a-Rest Lite 20 Chair, Guidelight Pad, stuff sack and a Hot Bond Repair Kit. On Cascade Designs Web page it list for
$109.00. I know somebody has to have it for less even though when you add it all up it totals a lot more if bought separately.
