Clothing on multi week hikes “Greetings on this fine New Year's Day. I was reading an article on www.backpackinglight.com about clothing weights and what to bring. I have my own ideas as to what to bring, but I was hoping you could share yours. In my opinion, I believe I could get by with one pair of pants, w/ zip off legs, long johns, one pair? boxer, etc. On a week hike this would be fine without seriously offending any other fellow hikers from my smell. On a month long trip, with the intention of packing light, what do you all suggest. Should I bring multiple pairs of clothing or does one item per need type deal suffice? I don't want to emerge from the woods with my clothing dry rotting and myself looking as if I was Tom Hanks in Cast Away. I see patagonia is the top brand, but do you have any suggestions as to any other brands that may be just as effective, but less costly? Thanks for the tips! Happy Hiking! SwampRat /me is just full of questions today” 11:00:49 PM 12/30/01 “If you wear Patagonia silkweight T and boxers, you can rinse them out and they will dry in a very short time. They are very comfortable and worth the money. Then there are those TTers who reject the idea of undies altogether. But I haven't got to that point yet.” 11:13:01 PM 12/30/01 “My clothes for my hiking season (spring - fall) is... baclava, sun hat or baseball hat, two non cotton shirts, one fleece pull over, one very thin wind jacket, rain poncho, one pair of nylon running shorts, one thin nylon wind pants, 4 pairs of hiking socks, running shoes, sandals, no undies. A fresh set of clothes is in the car for afterwards. No special brand names. I'm there to hike not to be a fashion statement.” 11:26:02 PM 12/30/01 “my three season clothing is a lightweight button-up, short sleeve shirt, a nylon sahara cap, nylon walking shorts (gusseted crotch), nylon climbing pants (gusseted crotch), and one pair of thorlos. i considered the zip-offs, but my shorts AND pants weigh less. plus, this past weekend, some dude ripped his crotch in his pants. well, i would have been ready (with my pair of shorts). he wasn't. too bad. winter is a whole other beast...” 6:24:53 AM 12/31/01 I stay toasty “In winter I wear nylon canvas pants, light weight poly shirt, Nylon shirt, TNF Mountain light Jacket, gloves and hat. I carry a poly pro long johns and top, a down shirt, gortex pants, knit hat, extra socks. That is it. I mainly use the long johns for sleeping.” 6:57:59 AM 12/31/01 “Clothing List:(3-season) Briefs (few pairs) CoolMax Base Layer (2 T-shirts, one for sleeping in) Royal Robins Nylon Pants (with zip-off legs) SmartWool Socks (can never have too many pairs of dry socks !!!) Fleece hat and baseball cap Lightweight Gloves Lightweight Rainwear Lightweight Fleece top” 7:58:34 AM 12/31/01 “From the outside in. -Patagonia Capilene Undies. -Malden Power-Dri T-shirt from Kathmandu (the shop, not the place). -Duofold Long Sleeve Thermal top. -Polartec P100 Long sleeve Top from Kathmandu (shop). -Gore Windstopper jacket from Snowgum (shop). -Polypro Long Johns From Bogong(shop). -MEC Rad pants (mail-order). -Smart Wool Socks. -Garmont Broncos/Oteros -Ex-Army Goretex overpants -Mountain Designs 3 ply Goretex Jacket. -Polypro Balaclava and liner gloves. -Wool gloves lined with thinsulate. -Wool Beanie from Kathmandu(place not the shop) In summer I'll leave the P100 fleece top and wool gloves at home and take Teva sandles and Kathmandu(shop) MCS shorts.” 9:00:57 AM 12/31/01 “you have my pants, dude! LOL!!!!” 9:06:47 AM 12/31/01 “"From the outside in. -Patagonia Capilene Undies..." Bunyip is actually Madonna.” 9:21:20 AM 12/31/01 “Clothing preference? I prefer none, but conditions and society usually dictate some cover. What I use in the wilderness varies widely with the season, the weather forecast, the elevation, the difficulty of the trail and my mode. Brand names are meaningless. August in the Sawtooths: hat, synthetic tee, nylon pants & shorts, light rain jacket & pants (no Gore-Tex), two pair panties, three sock changes, fleece jacket, 3 bandanas, Boots. That’s the works. (maybe sandals) Winter: as much as I can carry.” 3:05:14 PM 12/31/01 “none” 3:22:14 PM 12/31/01 “Summer Rocky Mountain Wear Socks-Thorlo and Smart Wool Boots-Saloman Backcountry 8 Classic Shorts-Grammici quick dry river shorts Pants-North Face Tech Ware Cordura Pants Briefs-REI synthetic "Climate Control" T-Shirts-North Face Tech Ware Synthetic Long Sleeve Pullover-Synthetic Long John Weave, more Tech ware or Long Sleeve Shirt(1)-Patagonia synthetic heavy twill weight Rain Jacket and Pants-Mountain Hardwear Ethereal, Gortex Light weight polypro gloves.” 3:32:33 PM 12/31/01 “Raddy, What is "gusseted crotch"? I've never heard the term but it sounds like it would cause a massive camel toe.” 3:38:32 PM 12/31/01 “I'm slow Tilt. Now I get it.” 3:50:16 PM 12/31/01 “pantscandy, just the opposite. it has no seam in the crotch, and it gives you more flexibility. it makes for smooth walkin'.” 4:50:46 PM 12/31/01 “A gussetted crotch will also allow you to cram Kleetys squirrel in there in with your other boys. Oh, clothes? In Death Valley, none. Go like that in the backcountry and you may get sap in your schlitz.” 4:56:27 PM 12/31/01 “my gusset ain't got no squirrel room!” 5:04:07 PM 12/31/01 “Either way and it's likely to effect your sperm count.” 6:14:46 PM 12/31/01 Wrong again... “SwampRat, Sorry I misread your initial post. I have no experience on hikes of more than five days. Ignore my recomendations.” 6:34:37 PM 12/31/01 “For a 4 day Winter trip: 1 set Polly Pro. tops & bottoms 2 pair socks 1 pair sock liners 1 polyester top w/hood 1 nylon T-shirt 1 nylon pants w/zip off legs 1 nolon rain pants 1 rain jacket (shell) 1 pair gloove liners 1 pair ragwool glooves 1 fleece balaclava Gore-Tex Boots” 6:55:48 PM 12/31/01 “camel toe?...... on radman?...... shudder” 4:09:57 AM 1/01/02 “Tilt, if you wear your undies on the outside you can get an extra couple of days wearing. They ARE Rad's pants, it took days to get all the dead squirrel out of them! Pantscandy, look for a diamond crotch, better use of fabric, better movement and better use of seams. It appears I didnt read the initial thread properly either, so add; 2 more pair of undies 2 more pairs of socks 1 more l/s thermal 1 more t top (polyester) 1 polartec pants (p100) 6 baby saftey pins (for hanging me wet jocks and socks off me pack as I'm walking)” 7:16:02 AM 1/03/02 “Yes indeedy! Diamond crotch... Remember what happened with Bacpac and those lumps of coal from Santa! There's got to be some kind of prize for having the tightest ass in world history.” 10:13:05 AM 1/03/02
