Where did I call the guy a name lickety? I made an observation. The fact that they felt they had to come here and post their feelings that REI is a better board, rather than posting their thanks THERE where Fritz and Biz obviousely hang also, tells me all I need to know.

You can think this is some tight club but it's not really. All you have to do is post.

And why is it the two biggest nay-sayers are people who seam to never post? Would you like a formal apology for people having made friends here?

Welcome to the HMWH Club Kodiak. Our advice to you is to start drinking heavily, and when you want to pick up the phone and profess your love to the X, gently hang the phone up, call a cab, and head to the nearest strip club. Repeat this for another 5 months, and then you should be just fine.

and there I thought I was being heavy handed when this thread started. IMO that the vast majority of people who post here are well versed in backpacking, open minded as to new ideas, and above all, they are not bashful in asserting their opinions. All of this leads the healthy discussion. To those who find this offensive, then I do not know what I can say to make it better. To those who like to discuss various issues with others (regardless of whether they agree of disagree with your opinion) then you will feel comfortable.

You think that the strip club will help huh? You have never been to Fairbanks Alaska. All of the stripers are fugly. I would rather look at snow most of the time. But im planning a trip to NY city to see a friend and hike some of the AT and he said that he can hook me up with some good strip clubs. As for calling the X. She is the devil and I don't know who lefts the gates open but I'm sure that they will get her and return her to her proper home. Some place a little warmer in hell.

I've seen this routine a number of times and it never fails to amaze me. The world isn't always the way I would like it to be either (large surprise). It's kindof like the stupefyingly long title of that Mason Williams tune: "I've Heard That Tear-Stained Monologue You Do There By the Door Before You Go".

I always wonder... Why the Announcement? Does said Announcer feel wronged in some way?

I've been to bunches of these message boards over the years and they're remarkably alike after a while. The only differences are in degree. The rest of life always insinuates itself; you can't keep it out.

o well.

Give my regards to TB75, Livingston and all the rest of those wackos over at REI... There's almost always a 'guns in the woods' debate raging (and Do Not mention cell phones).

I like this place because the people are real. I've been turned off by many other boards by poser posters.

This is real people (who share a love of backpacking) talking about life.

If you don't like it, more power to ya. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and not all personalities mesh. No biggie. Just don't come on here and whine and cry about it! Nobody wants to hear it, nobody likes a whiner!

Get on with your life, and please, let me get on with mine.

I can't complain...

Lessee, Jupiter is pretty dang bright at the moment. The Quadrantid meteors on the 3rd are going to be screwed up by moonlight. Here's a good link for the weekly lowdown.

My little county here in east central Georgia is under a Winter Weather Advisory. We'll get 2 inches of snow and the place will grind to a halt. There was a run on bread and milk at the grocery stores earlier tonight, LOL.

Damn, I better dig out the snowshoes and the avalanche probe.

Ah Heck, that other subject was pretty much played out anyhow, Goose. Hmmm... that was like '73 or something. A friend of mine swiped a bottle of Chivas from his mother's liquor cabinet and buried it in the snow. We spent the next 48 hours digging up the front yard, but we didn't find it until the snow melted.

What a bunch of delinquents. Good thing we outgrew That, *ha*.

How about a secret handshake, Goose. Strangers don't hug each other in these parts. ;-)

Wow. I hit the

trail

for a day and look what I miss.

REI-format stinks, too many people trying to hook up for nude hiking and not very many participants.

GORP-too few posters for it to be much good. Don't like the format much either.

Outdoorsclub-same problems. Good trip planning tools though.

OAN backpacking forum-great group of people, most migrated from the backpacker mag site cause the format/software stinks.
OAN has been a little quiet lately, though.

Backpacker mag site? Good volume of posts, mostly great people (other than Wiggy), but I can't stand the format.

www.thebackpacker.com? Hey, its a room full of kooks (read individualists) that love the trail. What more could you ask for? High volume of posts, there is always something going on.

It OAN and here for me.

No, I don't live for thebackpacker.com, but it surely makes life a little more interesting, and guess what? I've learned a few things too! And I'm no spring chicken.

It's getting pretty deep over there at the moment, though. It's like the guy (or small crowd of people) is on a mission. Apparently, if anyone gives the tiniest damn about the environment they're automatically commie socialist pinko scum, ad infinitum. And it seems like the people behind it have nothing else to do all day. Last time I looked, half the threads were like that.

I find it funny that someone accuses this board of being cliquish. When I first came here. I asked some gear questions and some trail advice and was answered. I was even offered a couple of invitations to hike. Work schedule and distance are the only things that keep me from joining the club.

well-
I gotta jump in here with my 2 cents-
I have not been posting to this or any other board for very long, but I find people here who consider backpacking & hiking something they do,not who they are.
The discussions are broad-thoughtful and sometimes challenging. Every time I have asked about gear or a trip the reponses are there. If you want to post about BS,you get BS back which what you were shooting for.
I started out on the backpacker mag site-the format sucks and if that is way the other boards are I will hang here.

I used to make all the rounds to all the other boards and they each have their charms but if I get too into them I end up wasting too much time on line. Well the thing is.. whether this board is the best board around or the worst, who cares.. individuals will gravity to boards where their interest lies.. those who find this board to be offensive will go somewhere else. We can't stop them, and should not try. Those who try other boards and find this one a welcome relief will stay here.

This board is obviously not for everyone, and it's good that it isn't. What a boring world this would be if all of us were the same, and craved the same things from a message board. To those who don't like this board, it's a free country. My hope is that you will take the time to do an honest evaluation.

Thanks for the kind comments regarding my real life personality versus what you might read into my posts here. There are other boards out there, and if you look around you will see me posting to them sometimes as well. What sets this board apart in my opinion is that if you ask a question, you WILL get an answer. It may not be the answer you want, and you might not even get any serious responses, but you will GET a response. This IMHO is where the other boards fail.

By the way, how was that 35 degree sleeping bag you took on the Georgia trip, HPM? heh.. you must have bionic capilene for epidural space.

Radagast, got some really nice pictures from the trip. HPM and Madman have sent me several, and UpRocks showed me his this morning. I am back at work, so it will take me a few days to get everything compiled, but this trip (again IMHO) was one of the best I have taken, ever.

Skully, sorry you didn't go, but from what you tell me you have some great stories to share as well -- and isn't that what it is all about? We pick these trips, we go, we have fun, and we share enough common memories to last a lifetime.

Prowler, tell the Pizza Dude that he's a really kewl guy, and a heck of a trooper to hang in there with his limited backpacking experience. We all know that when you make winter trips, you often have to let the ELEMENTS dictate your choices. Josh was struggling with the remnants of a chest cold, and ferocious cold working on every extremity.

Elron, again you have my highest admiration. It's good to see someone with all the qualities of a good thru-hiker. I sincerely hope we get a chance to go somewhere again.

Scott? Hey, now you got lots of Georgia buddies. Hope to share some more time on the trail with ya.

The list goes on and on. What I am trying to decide about the other boards? Do they actually hook up? Do they plan trips together? What I think distinquishes this board from others is that we are more than a board. We are a hiking club. We are a wealth of information. We laugh, we joke, we prod and poke. We find the best in each of us, and the worst.

I am back at work now, so I don't imagine I will be posting all day. I will be buried for several days doing a little bit of what I actually get paid for. Let me assure you, I count all of you as my closest friends. It's 2002, and the highlight of my year will be the chances we all get to hike together once again.

Chili36: I wear the badge of ambassador with honor. It's a lofty appointment, but I will do my best to always talk well of TT, and the people who have shaped my life.
