I take a tent and fitted groundcloth. others take a tarp. Some use iodine, some filter. I like the filter cause I don't like the taste, but Vit C is supposed to get rid of the taste.” 11:09:35 PM 1/04/02 “will i need ice gear?” 11:12:06 PM 1/04/02 “I use raingear now, but have done the poncho. If you do, bring gaiters.” 11:12:39 PM 1/04/02 “how about bear canisters i dont have one” 11:13:27 PM 1/04/02 “i saw them at rei for $100+” 11:15:06 PM 1/04/02 11:15:26 PM 1/04/02 “I think Snow Nymph, who does that area uses a cannister. Doubles as a seat. Bear are a hassle. If you don't have a cannister, you have to hang your food. Some areas require them.” 11:16:56 PM 1/04/02 “i wonder if i can make one out of pepsi cans and duckt tape?” 11:17:36 PM 1/04/02 “Bear cannister? No way.” 11:18:29 PM 1/04/02 “a new weekend project.....” 11:18:52 PM 1/04/02 “i have a black and red rei pack i believe its 4500 ci maybe 4700 will that be big enough pathman?” 11:20:22 PM 1/04/02 “i think i can rent one in some places but” 11:22:29 PM 1/04/02 “Poppinfresh, this may have been your original objective, I don't know, but I will actually pay you big $$ to go away. Name your price, please.” 11:23:17 PM 1/04/02 “i am srry i will stop posting my stupid questions” 11:24:24 PM 1/04/02 Don't ... Stop .. Don't ... Stop “Posting your not-stupid questions. Newbies rule. I'm planning on the JMT in July. I plan to get a bear cannister but the bear will have to be awfully small to fit in it. That will keep my weight down, but what if the food outside tries to break in and get to the bear? It's just all too much. I figure I'll go for zero bag nights in 2002 and just spend my time here on TT. And I'll never call you Poopin'fresh, I promise.” 11:45:09 PM 1/04/02 “thank you” 11:49:37 PM 1/04/02 “I'm def interested OBI..just not sure when...if it fits then I'm game..Veteren JMTer here 16 days all 220 miles...” 1:11:40 AM 1/05/02 “Poppinfresh, you'd dang shore better do all the weekends you can, cause if you don't, or cain't, this trip will be total hell on you! A large JMT hike like this is NOT for beginner hikers. If you're serious about going, take a friggin' deep breath and start one piece of gear at a time. Start gittin it together, and be DAYUM SHORE that this is something that you WANT and CAN do! You will most surely piss off those who've come to enjoy a wonderful trip if they're having to baby you, or carry some of your gear. Brother you better be compfy about your sock/boot system for this ...... blisters and screwed up feet will not do on this'un.” 2:08:19 AM 1/05/02 Why make something that's cheaper to buy? “You could probably make a good bear cannister out of polyproylene, do you have the ability to mold thermoplastic? he he he” 1:31:58 PM 1/05/02 “Damn, I think I'm getting some interest here. Poop, I gotta tell ya... If the velocity of you questions ON the trail is anything close to your posts in here (is their rapid-fire existence an intentioanl joke, or are you as green as the grass I mow?), I think I'd have to go along with Wanderer. Otherwise, every word you spoke could end up a match lighting an ever-shortening fuse. I'd look forward to this trip, but if length and time are issues for anyone, I'm ALSO considering a few long weekend hikes in the same area, the longest of which would be the HST (7 days?). At the moment, I'm just thinking out loud, but replies will be thoughtfully considered.” 1:36:31 PM 1/05/02 I wanna go for the whole 10 days “Obi, I like the idea of a 10 day trip. If people can't do the whole thing, they can just piggyback on the end weekends” 1:49:38 PM 1/05/02 “Hi Obi, might want to track snowpack before firming up dates. Looks like this year is going to be HUGE, I think a lot of areas are at 170% of "normal" YTD. You'll probably be better off later in the summer after some melt-off.” 4:42:45 PM 1/05/02 “Wanderer - you hit a tender spot with that "normal" comment. It makes my skin crawl when "they" refer to snow or rainfall in California as more than or less than "normal". Hell - anything is normal, this is California!!!! Let's just say "average" how 'bout? OK, off my soapbox. Do you guys think this poopie guy is for real?” 8:29:17 PM 1/05/02 “Mr. obi and Mr. wanderer I must apologize for my actions on your thread. I am currently trying to ask a monitor to erase my stuff from your thread as well as any other threads that i have inadvertantly buged people on. Mr. obi and Mr. wanderer you hear much less from me. poppinfresh P.s you most likely dont want a novice on this hike so i am withdrawing my particapation in this one” 8:30:10 PM 1/05/02 “Need any help, or can I just watch? Kissy Poo! Lost Tonto” 9:19:48 PM 1/05/02 “Hey, I forgot... I'll be out there somewhere all during the month of August. I just don't know where, yet. I'll have a bunch of resupply drops down at Kearsarge I'll be doing. We'll have to see if we can cross paths. Larry would LOVE to give you a big stinky Larry kiss!” 9:22:52 PM 1/05/02 “"p.s. I'm cute but not available. But who knows, by June I might be" Biz 07:15:54 PM 01/04/02 Ok,,Ok,,,sometime in early June I will decide if I can make this trip,,,,LOL.” 9:24:58 PM 1/05/02 “yep, roger that. Helicopter rescues along the JMT are not unheard of.” 2:14:06 AM 1/06/02 “How snow surveys are done. eh, FWIW. Part 1 -prep Part 2 -depth and water content Part 3 -data collection ”2:17:01 AM 1/06/02 “I get the feeling that Mr. Fresh is yanking chain...It's entertaining at the very least..heheh” 3:29:36 AM 1/06/02 “let me know when the trip is...count me in! someone has to come along just to answer all of poop's questions.” 7:28:47 AM 1/06/02 “no i want to come i am just worried that i may have gotten on obi's bad side” 2:44:58 PM 1/06/02 My kind of party Ü “WOW, is this trip starting to shape up, or what? All the newbie inexperienced/weak people are getting weeded out, Mel is offering to resupply us, someone named Larry might be giving away free kisses...and there's even a helicopter ride at the end!! what's the drawback?” 5:24:36 PM 1/06/02 Biz (hottie) “mmmmm ....Larry is a llama, that might or might not be a drawback ;)” 5:41:48 PM 1/06/02 “hey you all can count me in. I now have a full gear list for the trip only if its ok with obi, and biz. If not for the whole trip maybe just a few days. I have the whole bear canister thing worked out, renting one from rei.” 5:56:51 PM 1/06/02 “Mr. Poop... It would take far, far more than the posts in here to get on my bad side... It's just too easy to ignore something, so losing one's cool just isn't my style. Mostly. Got no objection to your interest, or attendance. Or anyone else's, for that matter. The thing is, Mr. P., that the demeanor, tone, content, etc., of the posts we all read tends to lend itself to drawing conclusions about the personality in question, and quite naturally developing the probable assumption that we might experience the same pattern on the trail - and in person. What if the guy that posted all those queries were walking behind YOU, and ASKING you to speak to them? 'Nuff said. Biz, I don't think Mel's post was an offer to resupply... she's just going to be there doing so for OTHER people who PAY her to do it. That's her job. She's a guide. Besides, I think that if we have at least four committed to doing this hike, then economies of scale will surely benefit us, in terms of what each of us can do to whittle down the weight by sharing it. If you haven't yet tried it, go to Phil's Photo Page,a nd download the Pack Weight calculator (Excel format). I modified it slightly to accomodate MY needs and gear, and it helped me realize how to shave nearly 20 pounds off my back. Just think how much more might be shed if I shared the weight with someone by not having to duplicate some of my gear! Wanderer, my man, you're right about monitoring the snopak, of course. I would not be so eager to go early in the season, unless elevations were loser than what's consistent with the JMT. As it is, we'll most likely see snow - and hike thru some of it. The dates, as I've said before, aren't cast in stone, and though permits haven't been applied for yet, I'm following the lead of a few mentor's in this regard, and believe one or more small groups should have little risk if we go in mid-week (NOT a weekend date). It's never too soon to apply for a permit, though, and the time to do so is drawing near. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe a permit can be applied for more than 7 months in advance (or is it 6?). I'm sorta thinking that any time between late July (after the Montanapalooza) and the end of August...” 6:40:33 PM 1/06/02 “Re: Phil's pack weight estimator. I guess that would work... if I new the weight of all my stuff and the food I was hypothetically going to buy in the future. MP posted some good advice on estimating how much food one should bring on an extended trip (I think it was broken down into weight/day). I wish she would post that again.” 10:07:07 PM 1/06/02 “Obi, I seem to remember the time frame for permit application is 24 weeks before your departure...I could be wrong, it's been a year since I applied for one & the ol' grey matter just ain't what it used to be!” 11:10:22 PM 1/06/02 “I'd like to be able to squeeze in a long weekend once I see the intinerary and we can develop some rendezvous points.” 10:54:30 AM 1/07/02 “Obi...the great thing about hiking out off Florence, is that the trailhead isn't nearly as used as say Happy Isles...You should have no problems with permits....We resupplied out of Vermillion and carried on alll the way to whitney...I think my pack was at 28 lb.s the heaviest it got while traversing the JMT” 3:01:39 PM 1/07/02 “Cool. Way Cool. C'mon, ladies... those hot springs won't be nearly as much fun without you!” 7:45:36 PM 1/07/02 “Even better...Warm lake behind the springs has a great rock ledge to jump off of, and a huge log that floats up and down in the water..It's funny there were a couple of nude ladies on the other side of the lake..They didn't look so good...it was the one day I was glad I didn't have my glasses on...” 7:57:20 PM 1/07/02 “So who's going?” 8:06:13 PM 1/07/02 Depends on the dates... “But I'm really interested!” 8:09:35 PM 1/07/02 “me too. But obviously it depends on the dates. And if poop is going. My babysitting skills are way rusty.” 8:15:27 PM 1/07/02 “I'LL babysit you, Biz...” 8:18:38 PM 1/07/02 “not me!! poop!!! lol sides Obi, you're not that old Ü Anybody else going? Anybody else? Anybody else?” 8:41:38 PM 1/07/02 “I'd love to go and will consider it if the dates work better for me than Montanapalooza. But I am prolly going to Montanapalooza...won't know for another few months.” 1:41:08 AM 1/08/02 “If my JMT trips falls through (AGAIN!), and someone jumps ship, I might be interested. I'll be watching this one pretty close. Don't wanna be left high and dry. If group messages begin to circulate, I'd like to get in on that if possible. Depending on the dates, might like to go on maybe a portion of the trip anyway. tekapo@mediaone.net” 2:02:15 AM 1/08/02 Jump to Page << prev
