Some use iodine, some filter. I like the filter cause I don't like the taste, but Vit C is supposed to get rid of the taste.”

“I think Snow Nymph, who does that area uses a cannister. Doubles as a seat. Bear are a hassle. If you don't have a cannister, you have to hang your food. Some areas require them.”

That will keep my weight down, but what if the food outside tries to break in and get to the bear? It's just all too much. I figure I'll go for zero bag nights in 2002 and just spend my time here on TT. And I'll never call you Poopin'fresh, I promise.”

If the velocity of you questions ON the trail is anything close to your posts in here (is their rapid-fire existence an intentioanl joke, or are you as green as the grass I mow?), I think I'd have to go along with Wanderer. Otherwise, every word you spoke could end up a match lighting an ever-shortening fuse.

I'd look forward to this trip, but if length and time are issues for anyone, I'm ALSO considering a few long weekend hikes in the same area, the longest of which would be the HST (7 days?). At the moment, I'm just thinking out loud, but replies will be thoughtfully considered.”

It would take far, far more than the posts in here to get on my bad side... It's just too easy to ignore something, so losing one's cool just isn't my style. Mostly.

Got no objection to your interest, or attendance. Or anyone else's, for that matter. The thing is, Mr. P., that the demeanor, tone, content, etc., of the posts we all read tends to lend itself to drawing conclusions about the personality in question, and quite naturally developing the probable assumption that we might experience the same pattern on the trail - and in person.

What if the guy that posted all those queries were walking behind YOU, and ASKING you to speak to them?

Biz, I don't think Mel's post was an offer to resupply... she's just going to be there doing so for OTHER people who PAY her to do it. That's her job. She's a guide. Besides, I think that if we have at least four committed to doing this hike, then economies of scale will surely benefit us, in terms of what each of us can do to whittle down the weight by sharing it.

If you haven't yet tried it, go to Phil's Photo Page,a nd download the Pack Weight calculator (Excel format). I modified it slightly to accomodate MY needs and gear, and it helped me realize how to shave nearly 20 pounds off my back. Just think how much more might be shed if I shared the weight with someone by not having to duplicate some of my gear!

Wanderer, my man, you're right about monitoring the snopak, of course. I would not be so eager to go early in the season, unless elevations were loser than what's consistent with the JMT. As it is, we'll most likely see snow - and hike thru some of it. The dates, as I've said before, aren't cast in stone, and though permits haven't been applied for yet, I'm following the lead of a few mentor's in this regard, and believe one or more small groups should have little risk if we go in mid-week (NOT a weekend date).

It's never too soon to apply for a permit, though, and the time to do so is drawing near. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe a permit can be applied for more than 7 months in advance (or is it 6?). I'm sorta thinking that any time between late July (after the Montanapalooza) and the end of August...”

“Re: Phil's pack weight estimator. I guess that would work... if I new the weight of all my stuff and the food I was hypothetically going to buy in the future.

MP posted some good advice on estimating how much food one should bring on an extended trip (I think it was broken down into weight/day). I wish she would post that again.”
