I'm thinking about another trek on the JMT
I'd be real interested in putting together a 10-day or so trek on the Southern half of the JMT, starting near Florence Lake & Muir Ranch, and heading to Mt. Whitney.

If you are interested in this little escapade, why don't you let me know, and we'll initiate the prelim's, eh?

I could only consider it if the Montana trip falls through...but I'd love to do it, that's for sure!

If not this year, then maybe next year...

There was a discussion about that just a couple of weeks ago...don't remember the thread title, maybe somebody else does. Did it have to do with "18 days"?

Yes, actually, go the the search box and just type in "JMT" and you will see about 10 different threads that discuss this.

Not trying to be a smart aleck, but...see, there's lots of good discussion/info on this board.

1st question: is this a serious hike or a party?

2nd question: will there be snow?

3rd question: what dates are you tentatively planning on doing it?

general statement: Ok, I'll go

Wow, Obi that sounds like a great trip! Are you planning a re-supply, or are you going to carry 10 days worth of food? I barely crammed 8 days food in my bear cannister last year.
Any tenative dates?
Since I can't get large blocks of time off, I have decided to section hike it until I complete it. I'm planning to do the litle section from Tuolumne Meadows to Happy Isles some time this year either late spring or early summer.
I had already been looking at the possibilities of hiking from Cedar Grove or Onion Valley to Whitney also.
So lemme know ....I might be able to squeeze 10 days out somewhere :)

Biz, 10 days from Florence Lake to Whitney Portal will be a party!!! ...it's 110+ miles with some serious elevation gains and losses. ;)

OBI et al
OBI, how u been doin? The problem about starting the JMT from Florence is tearing yourself away from Blaney Hot Spgs, you might want to reconsider your starting point, perhaps Pine Ck.

Lickety, based on how the winter is starting this year you might want to hold back on your starting time unless you like miles and miles of snow. In '95 (heavy snowpack year) I was crossing passes in northern Yosemite in August that were under 11K and buried in snow on both sides for miles. I hiked one stretch that was 10 miles without seeing the ground. Continue to monitor the snowpack and make a decision in March/ April

OK, Nothing's Concrete... Just Askin'
Serious Hike.

Could be snow.

Serious party.

Want to Go?

Dates not set.

You won't need waders.

But like Dunk says.

You might need gaitors.

I was thinking late July to late August...
...depending on the snowpack, etc. Shoot for a weekday departure, and yes, Wind Walker, I'd pack for 10+ days (I got 13 days food in my Garcia Bearcan last time - but that's another thread/story).

Blayney sure is nice, though, eh, Dunk? I could pursuade myself to leave it behind, though, knowing what's ahead. Mebbe when I retire, I can spend a month or two in Blayney - those hot springs can get mighty interesting participants! I can only hope the water's still hot!

Obi - are you thinking of JMT and Montanapolooza or is Montana not in your summer plans. Dang - I have to become a self employed investment advisor if you plan on both trips. You are starting to sound like Snow Nymph.

Blaney's a great starting point...I was just up there the end of Sept., and yes the water is still nice and warm. We actually slept near the tub...bad idea.. the steam condenses and falls back to earth. When I awoke in the morning my bag was frozen solid..hehe

Pepperdog, yeah, I was considering both. Mebbe you oughta consider that investment advisor issue? I'm generously funded by clients who think I'm some sort of a salesman. The rest of them think I'm a professional advisor, so them, I have to make money for.

Getting my drift, there, Barkley?
