Prowler, sounds like you really got it together. Good for you!

Mike, I'll bet you really are crazy! (But thanks for the hottie compliment. It was adorable.)

Hey Om, are you flying into Montana?

I'm looking at flights Y'all and need some help determining where I need to fly into and how I might be able to wrangle a ride to the trail head from there.

Aero - what, if anything do we have planned for airport shuttles and which airport should I be using?

Inquiring minds in Texas want to know!!

tex, i am most probably flying into Cody from Hotlanta , i may be wrong, but i think it is a shorter drive to cooke city from cody and I will be coming in late sunday the 14th. because i am so unpredictable, i am planning on renting a car in Cody (chief, please say there are car rental places there...or greyhound? )
i have a must attend reunion on friday and saturday 13th in townsend, tennessee.

i am as unpredictable as crazy mike is crazy....:)

Phil, will definitely send you a sentimental message and a continuous om on the 16th.....i will still b52 while you will b53....:) 49 was a very good year...jai!

5/09/02

Its settled. I'll be arriving in Billings at 3:48 on the 13th out of SLC.

I didn't see any responces to 'stove rentals'? Is there a place in Billings that rents and sells last minute camping equipment?

Newgirl, that would be really nice if you could pick us up at the airport because I think Nav. and myself are sharing a flight into BIL. So are we tearing it up Billings Style that night or heading for the hills?

Is there a possiblity that there could be 'late arrivals' later the evening? Any arrangements from them and possible Plan B's in case something comes about.

Yo Bear!
I'll be in the northern rockies for most all of July. Let's hook-up and do the White Cloud Peaks, ID; or the Sawtooths, or the Wind River Range, WY; or the Uintas, UT, or... or... s#it! There's SO MUCH out there!

I'll get you my Idaho Bro's phone #. I'll do emails from libraries on occasion. I'll also do a "Westward Ho" thread throughout the roadtrip. We should be able to communicate ourselves into a hike.

Hey y'all - I'm 44, but I read at a 22 y/o level!

Om -
"Howdy, pod-nuh..."
hehehee!

NewGirly -
In response to your email inquiry:

1) No, there are no crocodiles in the alpine lakes, but the wild ferrets might pose a problem. Perhaps Sarabelle can sleep with you...

1b) Oh yeah - I have heard reports of catfish "big enough to swallow a grown man" being spied in the lakes.

2) Yes, snipe are edible. We should be able to catch enough to provide approx. three day's food, so pack light.

Heheheeee!

I sent you an email bout your stove situation. Or why cant prowler do this for you as far as that goes there will be a couple of stoves on the hike I am sure.
jerbear

5/09/02

Om and newgirl, iffin you need to do some roarin', the place is the campsite we stayed at above Mermaid Lake. There was a couple guys and a young boy camped a few hundred yards from us. The boy got altitude sickness. When he came out of it he gave a big roar. Great place for echos.

Om, what time are you arriving in Cody? Greyhound? To Cooke City? You crack me up!!!!

Yes, there are a couple car rental places at the airport. They are at Yellostone Regional Airport and they are;

Hertz - 1-800-654-3131
307-587-2914
Avis - 1-800-831-2847
Rent-a-Wreck - 1-800-452-0396
307-527-5549

Rent-a-Wreck isn't at the airport, but they may come pick you up.

Briar, I thought Aero said Base Camp in Billings rented equipment? My guess is there will be plenty of stoves to go around. I could loan out mine if needed, as long as you get it back somehow. Base Camp 1-406-248-4555

For those arriving on the 13th, why not all meet up at a forest service campground for some acclimating and lubricating?
Chief

TEX, I think I will have enough room. How much gear are you three (Navi, Briar, Tex) bringing? As far as the 20th goes, I'm not sure, but we'll get you there somehow.

BRIAR, there are a whole lot of options for the night of the 13th. Gojo and I have been trying to discuss it and make a plan.

GOJO, in response to my e-mail inquiry my rear end! When I meet you, you are really going to get it. Snipe. As if.

CHIEF, I can get Tex, Navi, and Briar fromt he airport in Billings, but if they are going to meet up for some camping . . . . I'm going to have to go back home that night and get Newergirl situated. Either Gojo will have to meet up w/ us and take them to the campground to meet you or . . . I could take them as far as Laurel and you could meet up w/ us and take them the rest of the way. You are thinking camping near Red Lodge? The other possibility is just staying in Billings and partying and you come to Billings. I don't know. Talk amongst yourselves. Let me know.

Om, that negetive thing you said was after you had come down the "99 swtichbacks". I don't think you were doing yoga at the time. It will be great smileing with you again!

Chief, newgirl, I'll be arriving on the 13th, I don't know the area, so whatever happens (camping, hotel, Aero's place) will be great with me. I think one of my favorite sayings, "I'm just here for the beer and the women", fits here.
Chief, I saw your 15 minute map info. Do you know the names of the 7 1/2 minute maps? I think I could pick them up here, if I knew the names.

As far as ages go...I'm 54, going on 26.

I'd prefer partying at a campground near Cooke City, then shuttling back to Red Lodge, if needed, on Sunday. Biscuits and Gravy at the Red Lodge Cafe? Or my own version at Fox Creek? Decisions, decisions.

I've got the crew cab, so I can take a bunch from Laurel over if they want to get to the hills earlier. Might end up doing two shuttles if that many people actually show up.

AND a bigger keg!!!

Okay, what are my ten essentials? Om mentioned it in an e-mail. Also, how does the food sit. work on one of these things? Do we each bring our own? Do we plan meals together? What the story, morning glory?
newgirl

New-sence-girl (hehehee!)
Don't sweat the details. Cover the five essentials for now: pack, bag, tent, pad, and ferret spray. (did you know that the ten essentials include a whistle?).

We'll help you with menu items. There should be plenty of first aid stuff, stoves, etc from which you could mooch. I'd be willing to share my stove with you if you pack it (light). I'll pack the fuel (heavier).

We'll prolly make more than one run to the store for provisions. We'll help you shop. I'll even front you $3.00 that you can work off as my camp servant.

You might even be able to sleep in the tent with Sarabelle. We-I-mean-she could prolly squeeze you in. Seriously, tho, mebbe someone will have a big enough tent for you to join him or her. You could pack the fly and poles or whatever.

Hmmmmmmm...
Just how big'a gal are you? You could prolly bed down in my tent's vestibule!

I will have two spare mattresses in the truck - they're both eggcrate styrofoam Wal-Martians. I'll bring my spare DeLuxe Snipe Call, too.

I will have a spare pot and mug, too. In fact, I'll have all my spare gear, including a pack. I bring it all on my roadtrips in case I find someone to join me on a hike.

Newgirl - If your family was worried about posting your picture on the internet, what do they think of you meeting all these derelicts in person? Do they know what kind of a cult you are getting into?

(Safety note: Don't drink the juice or wear Nike's if they offer them)
Phil

Gojo, SnowNymph is lending me a pack. Om is lending me a 4 lb. tent. I have a thermarest. I'd be happy to pack your stove, if we can share it. And exactly how much work does a camp slave have to do to work off three bucks? Finally, I'm not a big gal at all. I'm smally-petitish.

Phil, after I informed my mother of who Aero was and his "connections" she is less worried. She is a little noivous about me picking up Navi and Briar, but I just told her it was time to get over it. I actually decided to remove my pic. in an effort to make a comprimise w/ Newergirl's father (at that point I had convinced my mom it was fine) in our one-billionth attempt to make a go of it. As you all know . . . the one-billionth try was the straw that broke the Newgirl's back, so now I am free, free, FREE . . . to post pics. and go bping w/ TT buddies/serial killers/cult members. I promise to heed your advice and not drink any (poon) tang or wear the free Nikes.

newgirl I'm up for whatever on the night of the 13th. If we choose to hotel it, let me know where so I can make reservations and we can all stay at the same place. Camping is ok too, maybe even preferred.

To answer your questions a little more seriously, on the Llamarama last year we were all self-contained (except when Mel got lost with my food and sleeping bag). So, borrow or buy what you need to be in the woods all by yourself. That being said, I'm sure there will be enough stoves / pots for you to cook your dinner (Delta said I could pack my stove as long as there was no fuel). The same with water filters (I'll have mine). See if there is someone to share a tent with if you want (Not me, I use a bivy)(want to borrow a bivy? Figure your food on what you like to eat and ease of clean up and light weight. Example, oatmeal - tea for breakfast. snacks (jerky, gorp) for lunch on the trail. Freeze-dried dinner. Maybe some form of Kool-aide. And don't forget the tequila!
Do you know what clothes to bring? No more than 2 sets (1 to wear, 1 to change into when you fall in the lake). With a clean set in the car to change into when you get off the trail.

My e-mail is on my profile if you want more details or to exchange phone #s.

Navi, I think I'm getting it pretty well worked out. As far as hoteling it in Billings, that will be for anyone but me. I have to head back home and get Newergirl situated. I'm just trying to help you guys get where you want to be. On the 14th I can also pick anyone who stayed in Billings up on my way to Red Lodge.

The-Naviguesser
4:25:24 PM

Yep. That would be best. If Aero has a spot for you to crash that is good too. I also have no prob. meeting up w/ Chief, so you guys can camp.
newgirl
4:34:44 PM
5/09/02

I have another question. Is there a way to estimate how much weight a person can comfortably carry for their body weight and the miles?
newgirl
4:42:08 PM
5/09/02

How much can you carry?
With the miles we'll be doing weight is not that big of a problem. But, lighter is ALWAYS better. Get everything you can together, then look at it again and ask: "Do I NEED this?"
For example: you don't need a book. there will be too many people to talk to to read. First aid kit, just take the minimum. Somebody will have what you might need beyond that. When Mel ran off with my food and sleeping bag the first night everybody shared their food, I got into Pepperdogs pants (she loaned me her fleese pants) and I slept with Om (she shared her tent with me). they're great people and will gladly help if you need it.
So "Think ounces and the pounds will take care of themselves."
