If there were any donuts in the office today, I'd probably have about 12.

AERO
I am driving to ya!YO bear!

I would have two choices-fly economy and get in at 10:04 Sat. night. Or fly first class and get in at 6:00 Sat. night. I won't have to pay for either, but that first class eats up the free miles.

Most likely my return flight would be at 9:00 am on Saturday.ouch!

Jgeils, I won't be available to pick you up for either of those times, but I think Aero would definitely be able to do it.

hey Chief, speaking of side trips, any good ones off trail come to mind?

BTW, I think I'm driving in with Crazy Mike, or by myself if I decide to extend the trip.

Newsy -
Bring all yer clothes, too. We can help you select.

I'll bring:
3 pr socks
2 pr underwear
1 pr. polypro long underwear (pants and shirt).
2 tee shirts
1 shorts
1 rain pants
1 raincoat
fleece cap
ball cap
1 pr. lightweight fleece jammies (emer. dry clothes).
liner gloves
bandanna

Wearing everything at once should keep me comfortable in sub-freezing temps. I'll wear the polypro, fleece cap (and possibly gloves) at night and morning around camp and in bed. I'll sport shorts and tee on the trail, with rain pants and coat handy. My "jammies" will be kept in a plastic bag, and will likely go unused.

I will bring boots only - no Teva's, etc.

Okay, what is the standard list from the girl? Pepperdog? SnowNymph? Tex? Your input please. Maybe I'm a pu$$, but I think I would like more undies than Gojo's planning for.

So far, leaving LA Friday after work. Will drive the whole way (bed set up in back so we can get sleep) and hopefully arrive noon Sunday. I'll try to get off earlier if I can. If we get there early enough Sunday, we can shuttle my truck to Cooke City (?). With the bed & other stuff, I'll be able to take 3 people & 3 packs (total). Will have to stop at the cabin and pick up food cache from the cabin (I will mail it to you, Aero). After Montanapalooza, we're headed for the Winds, and hopefully a day in Yellowstone.

Briar, we've only been as far north as Utah. We'll check out that route.

Newgirl, take one change of clothes. You can rinse out the sweaty stuff after hiking and hang, it should be dry in the morning. NO cotton. For cleaning up at night, the Huggies Non-scented wipes work well. Dry them out before the hike to lighten your load, then carry in a baggie. I dry out Stridex pads for the face. Dove makes soap cloths, but are not biodegradable, so those can be used for the soap, and wash off with the Huggies. When you want to wash up, wet it and after it dries out, you can use it as TP. We carry our water away from camp to wash up. I normally put the long underwear on after cleaning up, so it should be ok without washing for 4 nights. I wash my hair every night out there too with biodegradable soap (away from water, when I wash up). The huggies are for when its too cold/windy to wash outside.

Baby wipes rules!! I got turned on to those a few years back. I have in the past carried that sanitary hand gel and a film canister stuff with cotton balls and alcohol. For vanity sake I even have a mirror from a old cosmetic pack. But I call it my 'signaling mirror, it gets sandwiched and rubberbanded in folded over moleskin for protection.

I would imagine that they make wash & wear undies for women like they do for men. I pack a cotton pair for sleeping in but the others are nylon boxers by Jockey.

Newgirl, I wouldn't sweat a whole lot there will be a plethora of 'goodies and gear' in case you or someone else was to forget something. From the sound of it, it sounds like many will be packing as if going solo. A dozen plus water filters, F.A. kits, clothing, stoves, etc.. Pack what you need, personal items.

Thanks for the info. guys. On my one and only, very short trip, I had the of not having to carry hardly any food, no stove, etc., so I brought more clothes, personal items. This gives me a good idea of what is apropriate for a longer trip.

hey mike, you take 25 pictures on a simple weekend hike . . . I rarely take pictures on a weekend hike. I took 50 pics in Rocky Mountain NP on a very similar hike to this one last fall. Something tells me you might take 100 pics the first day! LMAO! Too many? For you I doubt it, but maybe not enough.

Mike, I'm bringing lotsa film too. For our 30 day JMT trip, I took 1200+ pics. I hardly took any the first 5 days because of the fires. And don't forget the batteries!

Batteries?
I didn't see anything about any BOB's.

Seriously though. the best picture taking is as you near Fossil Lake and then on the other side dropping back down to East Rosebud. Don't take too many the first 8 miles or so. Theres just not a whole lot of good stuff there. Maybe some wildlife but that's about it.

There's nothing worse than dead camera batteries! I went 4 days on dead batteries, squeezing 10 photos out by warming the batteries up under the armpits. No one on the trail used the camera batteries that I had, til 2 days before we got out.

Let's talk about the food. What kind of trail recipes do you people have? What about the BBQ at Aero's cabin? I'm bringing some salads, what do you guys like? I just love discussing the menu. (Plus that road kill thread is making me hungry and lunch delivery is slow today.)

Bears shouldn't be much of a problem. It is bear country, but they usually stay down lower. With so many people there should be plenty of noise. bears don't like surprises. I'd still hang up the food, but I wouldn't mess with a bear cannister. I've never seen one used up there.

Moose are far scarier.

Dates...again!!

Mike, it just might if Evergreen makes a go of it.

Hey B whats it looking like? You gonna be able to finagle you way out there? Maybe hook up with a Midwestern and carpool the rest of the way. Think of it, almost a whole week on the trail in the Beartooths.

Is there a heavy moose population in that area?

Film and Salads
Film. Eons ago I heard the suggestion of one roll of film a day. You get to decide whether that's 24 or 36 exposure.

Salads. Some where I have recipe for "dehydrated" salad. Yes, that's right! And it was pretty tasty.

You might possibly see moose on the Cooke City side as it is lower and near some marshy lake areas.

Could possibly see some Mountain Goats up in the Fossil Lake area, if you dayhike to the NorthWest. The group (2 adults and 1 young boy) we ran into there hiked from Cooke City area and ran into a few. Everywhere they peed, the goats went and licked up. I guess because of a sodium deficiency in the goats.

Around Rainbow Lake, the deer would wander right through camp.
